Longer range, faster charging, less range degradation and a lower sticker price: That’s all that new battery technologies are to bring to electric cars. And while, on a practical basis, I remain more enthused about charging developments like GM’s recent expansion with Pilot and EVgo or Tesla Superchargers embracing the world, here are some new battery technologies that are strong rivals for my enthusiasm.
Emergence Of The Forever Battery
With solid-states, the name pretty much says it all.
You take the liquid electrolyte solution in conventional batteries and compress it into a solid. That creates a hyper-compact solid battery. And since it has zero wasted space and theoretically infinite energy density, it lasts far longer and charges far faster.
Of course, the implications of solid-state battery chemistry are huge.
Solid-state batteries could be the key to making our phones sustain power for days or charging our smartwatches in seconds. They could allow electric cars to drive for thousands of miles without needing to recharge.
But making solid-state batteries is no small task. Perhaps unsurprisingly, fundamentally changing the worlds battery science is a complex, costly process.
Specifically, adoption of solid-state batteries has been essentially non-existent, despite their theoretical superiority, for two major reasons:
They are exceptionally expensive to make. Thats because of expensive anode costs, a lack of manufacturing scale, and lack of understanding as to what solid electrolyte solutions work best for the battery.
They tend to short-circuit because of something called dendrites. These are basically small cracks that form in the solid electrolyte substance over time, rendering the battery useless.
No one has yet realized how to side-step these obstacles and affordably make effective solid-state batteries en masse

Does Tesla Make Its Own Lithium Batteries
Musk revealed in late 2020 that Tesla plans to reduce the cost of the most costly component of an electric vehicle by creating its own batteries. Teslas 4680 lithium-ion batteries, which have a diameter of 46 millimeters and a length of 80 millimeters, can store five times the energy of its current smaller 2170 cells.
The Bottom Line On Electric Car Battery Stocks
The world is moving toward cleaner energy and renewables. The push toward EVs replacing internal combustion engines is accelerating. This would revolutionize the transportation industry. And it presents a huge opportunity for investors who get in on the transition to EVs early.

What Is Luke Langos $3 Forever Battery Stock
Luke Lango never reveals the name of the company hes teasing in the presentation. Instead, he details everything in a report titled: The Extraordinary $3 Forever Battery Dynamo.
However, the only way to access that report is to join Innovation Investor for $99, so I decided to see if I could figure it out based on the clues he provides in the presentation.
And based on my research, I believe the stock hes teasing is Ilika plc .
This one took me a while to figure out because the clues Luke provided were pretty vague. At one point, I almost gave up because nothing seemed to match. But I stumbled across Ilika by following the trail, and the more I looked into it, the more convinced I became that this was it.
To explain why I believe its Ilika, Ill share a summary of the main clues Luke Lango shares in the presentation. Then, Ill walk you through why I think its a match.

What first tipped me off about this company was the share price. Out of all the solid-state battery companies I was researching that had a partnership with Toyota, this was the only one trading at around the $3 mark on the OTC market. Specifically, as of writing, its trading for $1.94.
Of course, thats not $3, but it has traded for $3 within the past six months, and it appears as though, since it started trading on the OTC market in 2019, it hasnt traded above $3-something. So my point is, its not entirely unreasonable that hed call it a $3 stock.

Battery technology is the new bull’s-eye for companies striving to meet the world’s growing appetite for electric vehicles.
What are the major EV battery technologies right now, and what innovations loom on the horizon?
Lithium-ion and lithium-iron phosphate dominate the current EV battery landscape. They have pros and cons in terms of range, raw material prices and more. Tesla uses both lithium-ion and LFP batteries. Emerging archrival uses a specialized LFP battery.
Battery companies and automakers are investing heavily to build cheaper, denser and lighter batteries. New technologies run the gamut. Some give old battery chemistries a new twist for incremental improvements. Others change the battery form factor or battery assembly for significant gains in performance or costs. In the future, radically different chemistries and other big breakthroughs are expected to emerge.
For its next-gen Ultium batteries, General Motors tweaked the lithium-ion chemistry to cut costs sharply. Tesla’s new 4680 battery cell claims cost savings and other benefits via a larger size and state-of-the-art engineering. China’s CATL, the world’s largest battery maker, touts even bigger improvements for its new Kirin battery, in part due to how cells are combined into packs.
“Batteries are the new gold rush as far as automakers are concerned,” said Ram Chandrasekaran, a mobility analyst at Wood Mackenzie who formerly worked for Ford.

EV batteries typically degrade due to temperature, cycles and time. Storage and operating temperatures have a huge impact on EV battery longevity in general, warmer climates negatively affect the lifespan of an EV battery. As the battery goes through charge cycles discharged while driving and charged back up while plugged in it slowly loses maximum potential. However, simply not using or charging your EV battery does not mean it will last forever: Calendar degradation is the battery losing life over time.
Unlike the lithium-ion batteries found in a phone or laptop, EV batteries utilize complex battery management systems that regulate how the batteries are charged and discharged to prolong their life. That means your EV battery is most likely to experience temperature or calendar degradation.

Electric cars are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which are more energy dense than the lead-acid batteries found in internal combustion engines or rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries found in some hybrids.
