Things May Get Better In The Near Future
Tesla’s chargers are getting a huge upgrade at some point in the future. Existing level three chargers, which vehicles like the Model X can use, have a 350 kW output, which is 100 kilowatts more than Tesla’s top-end V3 Superchargers are currently producing. That gap may narrow when a long-awaited software upgrade comes into effect which will boost the V3 Supercharger’s output to 300 kW. While this boost may seem minor, it could have a huge impact on vehicle charging times. The exact details of how it may change the Tesla charging game are thin, and not many details have emerged since the upgrade was announced back in the summer of 2021.
The V3 upgrade isn’t the only charging boost Tesla has on the horizon. The company has also revealed its plans for a one-megawatt V4 Supercharger. This new charger will be aimed at the company’s larger vehicles, namely, the brand-new Tesla Semi and the long-awaited Cybertruck, and no plans have been mooted to expand access to its smaller models. However, as the Model X is the largest standard vehicle it is likely to be on the list should access to V4 charging expand following its launch.

Tesla Charging Station Locations
Tesla charging station locations are all over the U.S. Tesla installed Superchargers specifically on popular travel routes to ensure that those driving long distances will have easy access to chargers.
When you look at a Tesla charging station map, you will see that there are many located along the entire distance of major interstate highways in the parking lots of hotels, rest stops, and shopping centers.
Tesla is also installing Superchargers within urban areas. These urban Superchargers are installed in places like grocery stores and downtown areas. With these convenient locations, you can shop or grab a cup of coffee while you wait for your Tesla to finish charging.

Destination Chargers arent always in the same convenient locations. This is because Tesla’s Charging Partners arent located just in large cities or along highly trafficked highways. Destination Chargers are useful when you are traveling along local routes, where there might not be Superchargers installed.
Your Charging Station Matters
Tesla’s Supercharging network is widespread, and while it may now be open to other vehicles in many countries, the network’s focus is firmly on its core customer base. Surprisingly though, a Supercharger station may not be your best option when it comes to charging your Tesla as quickly as possible. There are currently three kinds of Supercharger stations and three types of EV chargers. The Supercharger stations currently on the market are labeled V1, V2, and V3. V2 chargers aren’t the most powerful, but they do make up the bulk of Supercharger stations. As far as regular chargers go, there are currently Level 1, 2, and 3 chargers available and they will require the use of an adapter if you want to charge your Tesla at one.

Locating Tesla Chargers In Your Car
When youre in your car, you can easily see nearby Superchargers including total and available stalls, the charging cost, and icons showing what amenities are nearby like food, coffee, and shops.

Additionally, if you enter your destination into your Tesla in-car navigation, itll show you any necessary charging stops to make it to the destination, the estimated percentage of charge at the time you arrive at each charger, and the estimated amount of charge time to make it to the next stop. Its important to note that several factors may change the estimates shown on the Tesla navigation, including your speed and frequency of acceleration, traffic, and elevation changes.

Locating Tesla Destination Chargers
You can find Destination Charging locations on Teslas website. When you select a location, itll show you the business where youll find it as well as any additional information youll need such as the number of chargers available, the charging speed, and any details on cost or availability. Usually, hotels require you to be a guest staying overnight to get access to their Destination Charger and you may need to check with the valet or parking attendant to get access to the charger.

Find Tesla Charging Station Locations Using Their Trip Planner
Tesla has focused on trying to make the charging of your vehicle as easy as possible. Besides putting extremely fast Tesla charging stations in convenient locations, they also have their Go Anywhere tool, which plans your road trip based around Supercharger locations and essentially functions as a Tesla charging station map.
The tool generates a route from your starting point to your destination with Supercharging stations along the way. It also tells you how long you should charge at each station, as well as including the location of Destination Chargers near your destination.

For example, we entered a sample trip from New York City to Atlanta in a Model S Long Range into the Go Anywhere tool. The Tesla charging station map route includes six stops at Superchargers, with recommended charging times of 40 minutes or less. Stopping to charge adds an additional three hours to the trip, but we would save $118 on gas.
This feature is also available on your Teslas touchscreen. The Navigation function will locate the fastest route with Tesla charging stations along the way. The cars Navigation application gives the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding the best route to take. Tesla allows you to adjust the route they suggest if you need. So, if the route they suggest isnt ideal for you, you are able to customize it to meet your exact needs.

What Else To Know About Supercharger Costs
- You wont pay via a credit card as all fees for charging at Superchargers are billed through your Tesla account to your primary card.
- The cost of your current charging session is available on your Tesla screen in the charging section. It will also show you a summary of costs for your last charging session.
- Most Tesla Superchargers have idle fees, which means that if you leave your Tesla plugged in at a Supercharger after it is fully charging, youll be charged a fee each minute . However, if you move your Tesla within five minutes of reaching a full charge, Tesla will waive the idle fee.
Be Careful Not To Idle
Tesla has tried to prevent Supercharging stations from getting too full by instituting idle fees. Tesla will bill you an idle fee if your vehicle is fully charged while parked at a Tesla charging station where more than 50% of the parking spots are taken.
In the US, you will be billed $0.50 per minute if your car remains connected to a Supercharger after it is completely charged. When a Tesla charging station is 100% full, the idle fee jumps to $1.00 per minute.

Worrying about idle fees can be a bit stressful. But, keeping an eye on your Tesla app can help you avoid the fee. If you move your vehicle within five minutes of being notified that your charging is complete, you will not incur an idle charge.

How Much Does It Cost To Charge A Tesla
As discussed above, Destination chargers tend to be free, while some Teslas came with free Supercharger use for life. Supercharger fees vary from unit to unit, but Tesla owners pay an average of £0.26 per kWh. Non-Tesla owners using the trial units will be charged £0.60 per kWh, though this is reduced for drivers who opt to pay £10.99 a month for a membership deal.

How Tesla Is Easing Range Anxiety
As of May 2019, more than 99% of the US population is covered by the Supercharger network. Tesla is hoping this ever-expanding network helps ease range anxiety, or the fear of losing charge and being nowhere near a charger, which was an issue often discussed by Tesla enthusiasts early on.
Range anxiety was introduced by petrol vehicles. Every time the red light comes on in a vehicle, that is range anxiety. Owning an electric car is like owning a mobile phone, you get home, charge, and wake up with the equivalent of a full tank of petrol every morning. And nobody fills up twice in a day unless driving long distances, which is where Superchargers come into play.
In fact, Tesla recently unveiled a faster V3 Supercharger that will begin popping up around the US in the next few months. This advanced Supercharger will allow a Model 3 Long Range operating at peak efficiency to recover up to 75 miles of charge in just five minutes putting charge rates at up to 1,000 miles per hour. According to Tesla, this should help Tesla owners decrease their time spent charging by an average of 50%. And hopefully put an end to range anxiety once and for all.

Spending Too Long At The Charger Is Bad For Your Battery
You may believe a fair way to measure an electric car’s charging time is by noting how long it takes to its battery from empty to full. While that seems to make sense, things are actually a little bit more complicated than that.
In electric cars and other objects that use lithium-ion batteries, chargers can get to around 80% capacity quite rapidly. After that, things tend to slow down drastically, and for good reason. It can take just as long to get a lithium-ion battery from 80% to 100% as it took to get it to 80% from flat. This is because fuller batteries are in danger of overheating if fast charging is used, so multiple charging phases are usually built into the batteries to protect them from damage. It’s also a bad idea to keep a lithium-ion battery fully charged, ideally battery levels should be kept between 80% and 100%. With electric vehicles especially, fast charging may not kick in unless the battery’s charge level is above 20% but below 80%, so keeping your EV’s “tank” in this zone means you’ll both preserve your battery, and waste less time at the charger.

Locating Charging Stations on the road
Tesla Supercharger stations the fastest charging option will automatically appear on the navigation screen. To find all available charging stations:
- Tap the Navigation search bar, then select Charging
- Use voice command to ask the cars navigation or
- Visit afdc.energy.gov or search the Tesla, Plugshare or ChargePoint apps
How do I open the charge port?
The charge port is located near the drivers side taillight. To open the charge port cover, use the touchscreen or push once on the cover. When using a Tesla charging station, press the charging station connector button and the cover will open. The charge port cover will close automatically when connector is removed.
How do I charge Teslas?
To charge, remove the charging station connector from its dock, open the cars charge port and insert the connector into the charge port. When charging is complete, press the connector button until the charge port logo turns white, then remove the connector and return it to its dock.

With Over 4000 Supercharger Stations Worldwide The Company Is Now Letting Owners Vote On Where To Build Next
The next Supercharger station location is up to Tesla owners.
The all-electric automaker put out the invitation to vote on new locations via its Tesla Charging Twitter account but had originally announced its intention to democratize Supercharger station expansion last month. Tesla owners can log in to participate via their user accounts and can vote for up to five locations in the list of 183 possible sites. Theres even a page where you can suggest a location thats not on the list yet.
Currently, Lake Okeechobee, Florida, is in the lead with 558 votes . The town of about 5,000 people doesnt have any Supercharging station, with the closest one being 32 miles east in Fort Pierce. There arent any Tesla Level 2 destination charging in town, either, according to PlugShare.
Lake Okeechobee does, however, have a DC fast charging station near the center of town that plays nice with all other EV manufacturers. Tesla customers in the US can buy an adapter to convert CHAdeMO plugs, and Tesla recently released a CCS Combo 1 adapter as well, but not all cars can support the latter without a Tesla service upgrade. In that regard, Lake Okeechobee seems to be a good candidate for a new Supercharging station.
With no Supercharging stations around, PlugShare user William charged their Model S with a CHAdeMO adapter at this Okeechobee, FL FPL EVolution station.
Hopefully, as the Supercharger network grows, Tesla will start adding stations that support other EVs in the US soon
Tesla Charging Station Expansion
On a Tesla earnings call in the third quarter of 2021, Tesla announced that it plans to triple the size of the network within the next two years, so its continuing to plan more Supercharger locations to meet the needs of increased Teslas on the road.
Tesla also announced in November 2021 that its piloting a program in a few European countries to enable non-Tesla EVs to charge at Superchargers. Teslas website notes, Its always been our ambition to open the Supercharger network to non-Tesla EVs, and by doing so, encourage more drivers to go electric. Pricing for non-Teslas will be higher than Teslas, with exact pricing being available in the Tesla app. Its not clear if and when this program could expand to the U.S.
