After a series of price increases, the Tesla Model 3 Performance now costs over $60,000, but still runs less than a Model Y Long Range. However, the Model 3 Performance remains one of the best overall performing EVs for the price. Zero to sixty takes just 3.1 seconds, and it can achieve a top speed of 162 mph. As these performance figures are impressive for any car, the Model 3 Performance is a five-seater sedan with a 315-mile range. However, the BMW i4 M50 should challenge the Model 3 Performance’s prominence.

Smaller And Cheaper Tesla Model 2 Priced At Half Of The Model 3 Platform Cost Is Finally In Development
After putting the long-teased affordable Tesla model on the backburner in order to finish the development of the Cybertruck electric pickup and the Semi long-haul vehicle, Tesla is finally embarking on the quest to make the sub-US$30,000 electric car it has been promising for a while. Well, at the beginning Elon Musk was promising a $25,000 vehicle, but then came inflation and supply chain snags.
The cheapest Tesla will be built on a new platform, teased Elon Musk during the latest earnings call, that will be gunning to reach half of the Model 3’s production costs. Since the Model 3 is currently the cheapest Tesla, the Model 2 or whatever it gets named would have to start in the $25,000-$30,000 range to have a shot at a mass market adoption.
“Obviously, were going to take everything we learned from S, X, 3, Y, Cybertruck and Semi into that platform,” implied Elon Musk and added that Tesla is on a “2-for-1 target” meaning that it will be trying to halve the new platform costs to produce a vehicle. The purported Model 2 “will be smaller, to be clear,” warned Tesla’s CEO, but will be the EV pioneer’s first mass market vehicle and will probably outsell “all of Teslas other vehicles combined.”

Whats more, the fact many upgrades can be applied through online software updates means some issues can be remedied quickly and without any inconvenience. The battery and drive unit are protected by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty , while the rest of the car has a four-year/50,000-mile warranty. Tesla operates an as-needed policy for servicing, and points out that its cars dont need oil or air filter changes, while regenerative braking reduces brake wear.

If you want to save money and get a Tesla right away, the used market is a good option. However, youre not likely to find a used Model 3 for less than $35,000, unless it has asalvage title. Used Model 3s typically start around $40,000, though most cost more. The car isnt very old, and the cheapest versions havent been around for that long, so there arent many on the used market.
The Tesla Model S has been around since 2012, so there are plenty of used versions available. If youre willing to buy one with over 100,000 miles, you could spend as little as $20,000, though $30,000 could get you a first-generation Model S in good condition with reasonably low miles. Last but certainly not least is the heavily-rumored Tesla hatchback. While theres very little known about it, its rumored to take the form of a compact hatchback, likely with four doors. It appears to directly take on the Chevrolet Bolt and a variety of European hatchbacks like the ID.3. Since its a Tesla, expect a rear motor setup and enough horsepower to get it to sixty in under six seconds or so.

Tax Credit For Teslas
For Tesla cars to qualify for the full $7,500 tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act, the company must eventually abide by sourcing requirements for batteries. Minerals and other components used to make EV batteries must primarily come from North America.
The federal tax credit of up to $7,500 for electric and hybrid vehicles was phased for some models that reached certain sales thresholds. Under the Inflation Reduction Act, those models now qualify, however now more expensive models do not. Buyers must meet certain income limits as well.
The $7,500 tax credit applies to new vehicles. Used vehicles may receive a tax credit of up to $4,000 or 30% of the sales price, whichever is less. More expensive electric vehicles, such as the Model X and Model S do not qualify for a tax credit. Sedans may cost no more than $55,000 and trucks and SUVs may cost no more than $80,000 to qualify.
Finally, you must meet income requirements to receive the tax credit. You can’t earn a modified adjusted gross income above $150,000 as a single filer, $225,000 if you’re filing as head of household, or $300,000 for those filing jointly.
Running Costs For A Tesla Model 3
The Model 3 isn’t cheap but it makes the prospect of owning a Tesla a realistic possibility for many more people. Elon Musk revives talk of a small EV with half the cost of the Model 3 and Model Y platform.
- Tesla CEO Elon Musk mentioned his company’s next prospective model, which would be positioned below the Model 3/Y in price, will exceed all other models combined in production volume.
- The company previously floated the idea of a $25,000 Tesla model, which was planned to be produced in China, but has since shelved the project.
- Tesla is now once again working on a new platform for a smaller EV, which it seeks to produce at half the cost of the Model 3/Y.
The rumored $25,000 Tesla model was one of the most anticipated projects the company claimed to have been working on even before the Model 3 became a $47,000 car. The project, mentioned by Tesla CEO Elon Musk in 2021, appeared to have gotten as far as a Tesla styling studio in China where the company hoped to produce the car starting in 2023.
“About three years from now, we’re confident we can make a very compelling $25,000 electric vehicle that’s also fully autonomous,” Musk indicated in 2020.
The project had then been shelved sometime in early 2022, with Tesla focusing on getting the Cybertruck and the Semi into production in addition to opening new plants overseas.
The Model 2, as it is sometimes known in Tesla watcher circles and as seen in our rendering above, now appears to be back on the drawing board, but without a clear timeline.
