Solarcity Faked Sales Numbers

How Tesla Builds Batteries So Fast

In July 2018, three former employees filed a lawsuit against SolarCity, alleging that the corporation had approved the creation of “fake sales accounts”, which resulted in an “unreasonably high valuation of SolarCity” for investors. After allegedly informing management, including CEO Elon Musk, of these incidents, the employees were fired, which they argue contravenes California’s whistleblower protection laws. Tesla denied the allegations of contravening whistleblower protections and, in June 2020, the case was dismissed .

Tesla Energy Product Roll

Shortly after the acquisition announcement, Tesla announced that it would be building a new version of its Powerwall battery energy storage device and introduced the Tesla Solar Roof, a solar shingle product. Elon Musk presented the products using the homes on set on the backlot. The presentation was intended to gain investor support for the acquisition. It would later be reported that these roof tiles were not “fully working.” Members of the anti-Tesla group have cited Musk’s solar roof tile reveal as a major point of contention and an impetus for organizing.

The Solar Roof was to be made at the Giga New York factory, which opened in late August 2017 and would be operated as a joint venture with . The factory was not able to start producing the shingles in volume until March 2020 and Panasonic left the joint venture in early 2020, before it exited the solar business entirely in January 2021.

In mid-2017, several of the former SolarCity executives left the company. Chief policy officer John Wellinghoff departed in April 2017, co-founder Lyndon Rive left in June 2017, followed by his brother Peter shortly thereafter.

Are Supplier Stocks A Better Way To Invest

Investors watching the EV market might do well to consider EV suppliers as well as EV makers. Major car companies continue to confirm their commitment to producing EVs. That bodes well for providers of EV components and the potential investor benefits:

  • Diversification: Manage risk by spreading investments among various suppliers and makers in the EV sector.
  • Value: If an EV maker is overvalued, Tesla suppliers’ stocks may offer a smart investment alternative.
  • Performance: The continued transition to EVs plus favorable government regulations and incentives can mean increased consumer demand, more EVs produced, and growth in the need for EV suppliers’ products.

While supplier competition will likely intensify given the opportunities in the EV market, there’s also the potential for stars to emerge and reward investors.

What Battery Company Does Tesla Use

Lithium-ion batteries are the storage technology of choice in state-of-the-art EVs, leading to a substantial growth in global battery production. But, as with any new technology, the journey from drawing board to practical use in EVs is fraught with difficulties.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has set extraordinary goals for in-house battery production this year. In late 2020, Musk announced that Tesla aimed to halve the costs of the most expensive part of an EV by producing its own batteries. Teslas 4680 lithium-ion batteries with 46-millimeter diameter and 80-millimeter length hold about 5 times the energy of its current smaller 2170 cells. Tesla can use a smaller number of new cells for the same energy and driving range, reducing costs.

Tesla faces a lengthy process in ramping up its battery factory, though, complicated by plans to use a new manufacturing technology called dry electrode coating.

Lithium-ion batteries are the storage technology of choice in state-of-the-art EVs, leading to a substantial growth in global LIB production. The priority within the battery technology has been aimed at achieving higher LIB energy capacities to compete with internal combustion engine vehicles.

Dry electrode processing is part of the next generation of electrodes, as it reduces costs and eliminates toxicity to meet future battery production demands.

Why Tesla Isnt A Battery Company

Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning founded Tesla Motors in 2003. The first production model rolled off the line five years later, and shortly thereafter Elon Musk became CEO.

Traditional carmakers remained asleep at the wheel of their oil burners for almost a decade after the first Tesla hit the road.

Teslas relative valuation shows investors regard the age of the internal combustion engine as well and truly over

Astonishingly, it wasnt until 2017 that executives at the worlds largest auto companies identified battery electric vehicles as the top trend in the industry.

While announcements by incumbents of going electric and spending x amount of billions doing so have come thick and fast since then, Tesla is still way out front.

Last year the company was responsible for one in every four MWh hours in passenger cars hitting the road. In 2020, Tesla deployed more battery capacity than its four nearest competitors combined.

Who Makes Tesla Batteries

Tesla is a brand that provides folks with top-quality electric cars with excellent features. The company supplies these vehicles to buyers in North America, Europe, and other parts of the world. Tesla cars make use of top-performing batteries that handles the needs of these vehicles.

Tesla batteries are products solely supplied by Panasonic Corporation. Kindly note that this firm is previously known as Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. This Tesla battery supplier is among the top multinational electronic companies with a Japanese background, founded by Konosuke Matsushita.

Panasonic has its headquarters in Kadoma in Osaka and started as a manufacturer of lightbulb sockets in 1918. All products of this company are available worldwide under the Panasonic brand name and a few other brand names.

Now Lithium Faces Shortage As Europe Carmakers Look To Replace Fossil Fuels

Musk admitted that making the batteries at scale will be very difficult, but they are critical to his goal of building less expensive, longer-range electric cars that will keep Tesla ahead of a growing pack of competitors. The new Teslas 4680 lithium-ion batteries 46-millimeter wide and 80-millimeter tall battery are around 5x bigger than those currently supplied to Tesla.

The larger size is designed to pack more power into cells. We get five times the energy with six times the power and enable 16% range increase just form factor alone, said Andrew Baglino, Teslas senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering, at a battery technology day the company held back in September 2020.

For an electric vehicle, more range and power means that essentially, fewer batter cells can do more. That will help reduce EV battery costs, which are the biggest reason EVs cost more to purchase than gasoline-powered cars. Panasonic said it was building a new production facility at its Wakayama factory in western Japan to produce the new 4680 battery cells.

Years Of Solid State Promises

If youre like me, that comment about 40 years of development got your attention. I know, for example, that I only heard the term solid state battery relatively recently but I followed up Berdichevskys claim with a quick Google search and very quickly found research from Exxon and Duracell dating back to 1978 and 1981, respectively. That was based on this paragraph in the white paper: Calling the technology solid state doesnt tell the real story the reason to use solid state, refers to replacing the electrolyte which in conventional Li-ion is a liquid, with a solid. The reason to do this is to enable the use of a lithium metal anode that would replace the graphite anode entirely. A better name would be lithium metal anode technology, which has a long ~40 year history of major technical and commercial challenges pre-dating conventional Li-ion.

One such paper I found that chronicled some of that lithium metal anode development was titled Brief History of Early Lithium-Battery Development and authored by Mogalahalli V. Reddy, Alain Mauger, Christian M. Julien, Andrea Paolella, and Karim Zaghib. It is freely available for download at this MDPI link. Its densely written and packed with jargon, but the table below proves out the 40 years claim nicely, I thought.

Tesla Uses Different Battery Chemistries For Various Reasons And It’s Important To Understand Why

This Tesla co-founder has a plan to recycle your EV batteries l FT Energy Source

Our friend Andy Slye put together this highly informative video breaking down the details about the different batteries Tesla uses in its cars. Beginning in 2022, there are now three different variations, though there were just two not long ago. To be clear, Slye’s not talking about different battery pack sizes, but rather, different chemistries and individual battery cell sizes.

Avid Tesla fans, or simply people with an obsessive “need to know,” may be familiar with Tesla’s different battery chemistries and sizes. However, it’s not a topic that many people are familiar with, and if you’re in the market for an EV, it’s important to understand. Thankfully, Slye lays it all out in a way that’s informative and easy to understand.

Tesla’s first battery option is Nickel Cobalt Aluminum . The company started using NCA battery chemistry years ago in the form of 18650 cells, which were produced by Panasonic for the Model S and Model X. Tesla also uses cells with the same chemistry in the Model 3 and Model Y, though the size is different: 2170 cells, which are larger and more energy-dense than the 18650 cells.

Today, 2170 cells with NCA chemistry are used in all dual-motor Model 3 and Y vehicles. The current Model S and X still use NCA chemistry, though they’re also still using the 18650 cells.
