How Much Does It Cost To Charge Your Car At A Tesla Charging Station

New Tesla Supercharging stations in Northwest Arkansas

First off, you cant just walk to a Tesla charger and plug in your car yet. The ports arent compatible. This means youll need to buy the J1772 connector to do just that.

Buying this connector will cost you under $160. Another option is the TeslaTap brand that costs between $140- $260 depending on the amps you desire.

Tesla charges an average of $0.28 kWh to use its superchargers. If youre using stations that charge per minute, its $ 0.26 for cars charging below 60kWh, while charging above 60kWh costs $0.13.

So, even though it is possible to charge at a Tesla charging point, youll need a connector that will help you use the charging port. This factor could be cheap or expensive depending on your situation and needs.

Does Tesla Still Offer Free Supercharging

Yes, but not recently. When Tesla EVs really began ramping up deliveries to customers after the debut of the Model S, many customers saw added perks like unlimited Supercharging. Over time, Tesla has incorporated similar promotions for specific models or customers who made a referral.

However, this still remains one of the most confusing potential perks for Tesla owners, old and new. We get a lot of questions, such as: How can I tell if my Tesla has free unlimited Supercharging? Does free Supercharging transfer over? and Does Tesla still offer free Supercharging?

We will have to get more granular on this in a separate post, but here are some broad strokes:

  • Since mid-2020, Tesla has made no mention of additional free unlimited Supercharging
  • Fully-transferable, free unlimited Supercharging has not been offered since 2017
  • As the newest Tesla, the Model Y has never seen any free Supercharging promotions
  • The best way to check if you or your Tesla have free unlimited Supercharging is to contact Tesla directly

Heres a breakdown of what Tesla models may still have a promotion for free unlimited supercharging. Weve also put together a more detailed guide here.

Remember to check with Tesla to confirm if your EV qualifies or not:

*Note: No Tesla models from 2021 onward have any promotions for unlimited Supercharging at this time

How Much It Costs To Charge Tesla Model 3

While that’s already substantially less than refueling a gas-powered car, things become even more affordable with the Tesla Model 3. Since the Model 3 has lower-capacity batteries, the cost to charge it is also smaller. The baseline Model 3 has a battery capacity of just 62 kWh. Using the same 13.72 cents per kWh energy cost, charging the baseline Model 3 at home from 0-100 would cost just $8.50. For the Long Range and Performance versions of the Model 3, the cost increases to about $11.25. Supercharging a standard Model 3 from 0-100 percent battery should cost $14.88, while the Long Range and Performance versions will be around $19.68.

How Much Does It Cost To Charge A Tesla

Tesla to open Supercharger station in Parsippany

On average, it costs $13.96 to charge a Tesla, based on the national average cost of electricity. Across all models, Teslas cost slightly less than $0.05 per mile to charge . Heres how individual Tesla model charging costs break down:

  • The Tesla Model 3 costs $9.62 to fully charge
  • The Tesla Model S costs $18.29 to fully charge
  • The Tesla Model X costs $18.30 to fully charge
  • The Tesla Model Y costs $13.58 to fully charge
  • Across all product lines, the average charging cost of a Tesla is $0.0456 per mile

While, as we explain below, the cost of charging an EV depends on several factors, weve summarized what you can expect to pay for the various Tesla models. Across all product lines, the average charging cost of a Tesla per mile is 4.56 cents. These numbers are based on EnergySage data compiled from actual electric bills reported by U.S. consumers over the last six months. The average cost of electricity in the U.S. is approximately 15.45 cents per kilowatt-hour .

Keep in mind that the energy required to charge the battery is greater than the battery size because some of the energy used to charge the battery is lost during the charging process. Well explain this process in greater detail later on, but its important to note that these numbers are conservative based on data filed with the Environmental Protection Agency .

Other Important Factors To Note

The prices below cover the approximate cost of charging your Tesla EV from 0 to 100 percent, even though you should never let your vehicle battery get to 0 percent. Furthermore, you generally shouldnt charge your Tesla all the way to 100 percent unless you need that full range for a long trip, and plan to drive it shortly after charging.

Also, remember that AC chargers are not perfectly efficient, and more kWh of energy is required to replenish a battery pack than the actual battery capacity itself.

This is because the vehicle has to convert the alternating current from the electrical circuit to a direct current that can be successfully used to charge the battery.

As a result, the efficiency of the charger decreases, especially as your EV battery creeps closer to full capacity, since the level of heat increases, releasing precious energy.

Luckily, Teslas can use this heat for things like battery preconditioning in cold weather, but for the sake of strictly charging, you will require more kWh of energy to charge your battery than the actual battery size.

Can You Plug An Electric Car Into A Regular Outlet

It is possible to charge your vehicle with a regular three-pin socket. But using a dedicated EV charger will provide more power. EV home chargers deliver about 7kW power, while a standard three-pin home socket only has about 2.3kW.

If you use a dedicated EV home charger, you will get three times more charge three times faster compared to a regular three-pin socket.

When buying your EV, it will come with a charging extension specifically for charging your EV. If you dont cover too many miles per day or use your car for work, you might benefit from charging through your designated charging port. If you leave your car to charge overnight every day, you will have enough range to cover a couple of miles comfortably the next day and not experience range anxiety.

In conclusion, a regular socket at home could charge your vehicle, but it would be slow and not deliver the amount of power you might need to get started the following day.

Does It Cost Less To Drive A Tesla For A Year

If you calculate the average of all Tesla models, it costs $614.51 to charge per year. Comparable gas-powered cars cost an average of $2,245.10 to fuel per year. So, Teslas cost approximately $1,631 less to drive each year than gas vehicles. This is calculated by using the average U.S. gas prices from AAA and electricity prices from nationwide EnergySage data as of April 2022, along with the average distance driven according to the Department of Transportation of 13,476 miles each year.

How To Charge Tesla At Home

The best approach for charging a Tesla at home is to have an electrician run a 240V-50A circuit from your electrical service box to the location where you want to plug in your charging cable. At that location, the electrician will wire a NEMA-14-50 outlet .

Your Tesla Universal Charging Connector then plugs directly into the NEMA 14-50 outlet. Two important points: the charger resides inside your vehicleall you need is the circuit described and the UMC, and do NOT assume you can charge your vehicle using a 110V lineits enormously inefficient and very time-consuming.

Level 3 Public Charging

A much less common but far quicker alternative is to access a Level 3 public charging station. Also known as DC Fast Charging, it can bring a given electric cars battery up to 80% of its capacity in around 30-60 minutes.

EVgo maintains the nations largest network of Level 3 charging stations in major metropolitan areas, and offers free charging for two years to buyers of the BMW i3 or Nissan Leaf in select markets. Meanwhile, Tesla Motors maintains its own Supercharger network of fast-charging stations across the U.S., though their use is limited to Tesla vehicles. For its part, Porsche will give buyers of its full-electric Taycan three years of unlimited 30-minute charging at Electrify America charging units when it debuts for the 2020 model year.

Unfortunately, while Level 3 is the fastest way to charge an EV its also the costliest. As an example, we were recently billed $0.29 a minute for DC Fast Charging in the Chicago area via an EVgo station. A 25-minute session that added around 50 miles of added range to a Volkswagen eGolf cost $7.25, which comes out to $3.62 for 25 miles. By comparison, the EPA says it costs an average of $2.26 to pilot the standard gas-powered VW Golf the same distance.

Found another employee in person who stated that parking payment was required. Charging fee was charged to our account and paid the parking fee. The Average Costs Of Using Car Charging Stations

Tesla to open charging stations to other EVs

The new trend is using chargeable cars due to their effectiveness in causing less pollution and for their convenience. Using an electric vehicle gives you multiple advantages over those using gas because a gas vehicle has fewer moving parts than a gasoline-powered car meaning that it requires less maintenance than a regular car.

Just like gas stations put fuel in your car, there are multiple car charging stations to help you charge your vehicle whenever you need it to power up. Different gas stations will have varied prices of fuel per liter. The same applies to charging stations. They charge according to the charger level you are using and the demand for charging ports when youre changing.

During rush hours, when everyone needs a charging port to recharge their cars, thats when the price goes up per kilowatt. The level of chargers youre using also determines how much it will cost to charge your vehicle entirely. When at a public charging station, you can either use a level 1 or level 2 charger. The level 2 charger is always cheaper than the level 1 charger, but it takes much longer to charge your car at a level 2 charger fully.

    Which Is The Best Ev

The best EV for you will be the one that meets your budget and gives you the range you need for daily tasks. Both the Nissan Leaf and Tesla’s Model 3 are affordable options. While Tesla’s Supercharger network is very well thought out, not all cities have access to one, so you will need to consider the availability of applicable chargers near you. If you need space and performance, the Model X is great for large families and is priced similarly to other luxury SUVs.
