The Great Electric Car Race Is Just Beginning

On the southern edge of Brussels, where the city turns to suburbs, the future of Germanyâs most successful automaker is taking shape inside a peculiar sort of car factory. Here, there are no exhaust pipes, transmissions or fuel tanks. There are no spark plugs, radiators or manifolds. What the Volkswagen Group factory does have, however, are batteries stacked to the rafters.

Thirty-six shoebox-sized battery modules, each containing a dozen lithium-ion cells, are packed into seven-foot long electric-battery packs and slung under the floor of each sport utility vehicle produced here. The first electric SUV from Volkswagenâs luxury Audi brand, the e-tron, can go 400 kilometers on a single battery cycle and be recharged in as little as half an hour. The styling is conventional, the interior is luxurious and the ride is nearly silent.

The e-tron SUV has one job for Volkswagen: Prove that a carmaker that has relied almost exclusively on the internal combustion engine since it was founded 82 years ago can produce electric vehicles people want to buy and policymakers will embrace as they cast around for ways to tackle the climate crisis. Success means that Volkswagen will overtake rivals, including Tesla, in electric car sales and fend off new challengers from China and Silicon Valley failure could signal the beginning of the end for a company with 665,000 employees and annual revenue of $265 billion.

What Are The Least Reliable Vehicles

While this year’s rankings highlight hybrid vehicles as some of the most reliable options on the road, the same does not hold true for plug-ins.

Toyota Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime EVs have lower reliability scores than their hybrid counterparts, according to Consumer Reports, and the plug-in Chrysler Pacifica hybrid was found to be one of the least reliable vehicles based on the survey.

Only full-size pickups fared worse for reliability when compared with EVs. Consumer Reports notes that with so many new EV models on the market, its not surprising that the results are “subpar.”

Models from Tesla Motors, which leads the market in EV sales, continue to have issues with body hardware, steering and suspension, paint and trim and climate system. The Model 3 has average reliability, while other Telsa models including the S, Y and X are below average.

Like BEVs, FCEVs also power the electric motor though an electric current. But the chemical reaction in a fuel cell result in the production of the electric current. They also dont use an internal combustion engine like BEVs. Electricity powers the vehicle propulsion directly, so it also counts as a full electric vehicle.

In the fuel cell, there is a positive terminal , a negative terminal and an electrolyte. Hydrogen is delivered to the cathode from the hydrogen storage tank through a series of pipes. At the cathode, the hydrogen atoms are stripped of their electrons and become positively charged protons.

As the protons are now attracted to the negatively charged anode, they will travel towards via the electrolyte. The electrolyte is made from a special material that only allows protons to pass through them. The electrons from the hydrogen atoms will also flow towards the anode, separately in an external circuit. This flow of electrons is known as the current and it is what drives the electric motor.

FCEVs were once hailed as the future of the automotive industry, even before BEVs took over. This is because of their superior performance and how easy and quick they are to recharge, compared to BEVs. On a full tank, FCEVs can cover a much higher range than a fully charged BEV.

Battery Demand By Region 2015

The Net Zero Scenario projects battery manufacturing scaling up rapidly, as current announced production capacity for 2030 would cover only 50% of required demand in that year. Furthermore, next-generation battery technologies need to become commercially available between 2025 and 2030.

Existing regulatory frameworks, along with additional stimulus measures in some countries, enabled dynamic growth in electric car sales in 2020. Before the Covid19 pandemic, many countries had already begun to tighten fuel economy standards and strengthen purchase incentives to bolster the EV market, but by the end of 2020 more than 20 economies had announced targets to phase out internal combustion vehicles over the next 10-30 years.
