First Drive: 2023 Toyota Bz4x Eases The Shift To Electric Cars

The 2023 Toyota BZ4X electric crossover eschews cliches. It is not a game changer, nor is it a paradigm shifter or envelope pusher. Its not revolutionary, evolutionary, or rugged. It is the BZ4X, a bad name for a good car that eases Toyota fans into full electric power, though it comes at the expense of freshness.

The BZ part of the name stands for Beyond Zero, and the BZ4X represents the first electric in a series of forthcoming BZs.

Like the experimental RAV4 EV developed with Tesla more than a decade ago, Toyota hedged its EV bet by splitting development costs with Subaru, and its nearly identical all-wheel-drive electric crossover, the 2023 Subaru Solterra.

2023 Subaru Solterra

2023 Toyota bZ4X Limited AWD

Unlike the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR 86 sport coupes jointly developed by the two companies, the Subaru Solterra and the Toyota BZ4X are virtually interchangeable. Subarus black plastic cladding becomes high-gloss black plastic on the BZ4X and extends beyond the wheel arches to envelope everything from the LED headlights and razor thin running lights down to the lower air intake. Its a raccoon mask, cinched around as many origami angles as on the RAV4.

The cabin feels cramped relative to the open airy spaces of the Volkswagen ID.4 and especially the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The fixed glass roof in those evolutionary electrics only furthers the distance from the practical but pedestrian BZ4X.

Punchy Powerful And Satisfying To Drive

Front-drive bZ4Xs have a single motor that produces 201 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque, while all-wheel-drive models have one motor on each axle, each producing 107 horsepower and 124 lb-ft for a total output of 214 horsepower and 248 lb-ft. Toyota cites 0-60-mph times of 7.1 seconds with front drive and 6.5 with all-wheel drive these are modest figures by EV standards, but they don’t tell an accurate story. Both are quick off the line and very torquey when on the move, blasting the bZ4X through traffic like a sci-fi rocket scooter. Were the bZ4X a gasoline-powered car, we’d praise its midrange punch, but this electric powertrain packs something more akin to a mule kick. It’s the sort of acceleration that makes people swear off internal combustion.

Once on the move, the bZ4X generates a fair amount of road noise, particularly from the back of the car. The Limited, which sported an optional oddball two-piece split spoiler, produced even more wind whoosh. With no engine to mask this noise, sound insulation in an electric car is trickier. Considering the company’s experience with the hushed Mirai, an electric car that produces power with a hydrogen fuel cell, we didn’t expect Toyota to get this wrong, but it did.

All Grades Are Equipped With Power Supply Functions For Use In Times Of Disaster And Other Emergencies

Toyota testing hydrogen fuel cell

An accessory power outlet and an emergency power supply mode are equipped to all grades as standard. During blackouts and other times of emergency, parking the vehicle and placing it in Emergency Power Supply Mode enables the Aqua to be used to power electrical appliances such as electric kettles and hair dryers. When driving normally, the vehicle can be used to power appliances via its accessory power outlet, and also to charge smartphones and other electrical devices via its in-cabin USB terminals.

Toyota Electric Vehicles And Toyota Full Electric Options

Though there arent any pure all-electric Toyota cars for sale on the US market, there are many regular hybrids such as the RAV4 and Prius, as well as their PHEV counterparts. The only model that could be considered an electric Toyota vehicle would be the Mirai. Technically classified as a Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle or FCEV, its hydrogen PEMFC converts H2O into electrons, which the electric motor then conjures into 153 horsepower. Outputs are directed through a single-speed auto transmission to the front wheels in the existing edition.

There is news from Toyota on a new Mirai scheduled to debut by 2021. It promises to be better and sexier by comparison. The automaker claims that the future version will come with a rear-wheel-drive system to provide more space for a larger tank. This, in turn, extends the cars driving range and mitigates the issue of the very restrictive refueling network. The current version’s 312-mile range already tops most EVs in the USA but its cost is a little on the steep side of the segment. The nameplate is typically proffered up as a standalone trim.

Kbb Vehicle Review And Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBBs editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better than the other cars its competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built?

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading as well as the essential acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.

Detroits automakers say they are ready to go all-electric, but at the Motor Citys auto show this week they are adding a caveat: not just yet.

Ford Motor will unveil Wednesday night the seventh-generation of its Mustang sports car in downtown Detroit, underscoring the challenges Motor City automakers face as they straddle the gap between their combustion glory days and an uncertain electric future.

The newly redesigned Mustang, heir to an icon of the 1960s and the Baby Boomer generation of those born after World War II, will still burn gasoline, just like the original. In contrast, rival Stellantis NVs Dodge is phasing out its V-8 powered, gas-burning, high-performance sports cars next year.

The Mustang will be one of the few new vehicles revealed at this weeks North American International Auto Show in Detroit the first since 2019 after the COVID-19 pandemic halted the annual tradition.

President Biden visited the show Wednesday ahead of its public opening on Friday, and used the backdrop of gleaming cars to promote his administrations efforts to accelerate production of electric cars.

All around the president, however, were vehicles powered by petroleum trucks, SUVs and a few cars, such as the Mustang, that Detroit automakers are counting on to keep profits flowing.

A collection of life-like model dinosaurs across a hall from the automaker displays amplified the fossil fuel imagery at the Huntington Place venue for the auto show.

Toyota Is Recalling Its First Mainstream Electric Car Because The Wheels Can Fall Off

Toyota has issued recalls for its first mainstream electric car and one of its full-sized pickup trucks for problems in which nuts or bolts could loosen and wheels or axles can become disconnected.

Toyota warned owners of BZ4X electric SUVs to stop driving them because the wheels might fall off. The SUVs only recently went on sale in the United States and the warning and recall announced by Toyota Motor Sales USA on Thursday applies to all approximately 260 BZ4X SUVs that have been delivered to customers so far.

BZ4X owners should stop driving the vehicles immediately, according to Toyotas announcement. Bolts that hold the wheels on can loosen after even a relatively small number of miles on the road, allowing the wheels to detach. Toyota is still investigating why this can happen and under what sorts of conditions.

Toyota doesnt know, yet, how to fix the issue, the automaker said. Until a remedy has been figured out, Toyota dealers will pick up customers BZ4Xs and bring them to the dealership and provide free loaner vehicles in the meantime, Toyota said.

The Toyota BZ4X and Subaru Solterra electric crossovers were developed jointly by the two Japanese automakers. They share most of their engineering and even look very similar. Subaru has not announced a similar recall for the Solterra because none of those have been delivered to customers in the United States yet, Subaru spokesperson Jessica Tullman said in an email.

Cost To Drivecost To Drive Estimates For The 2023 Toyota Bz4x Xle 4dr Suv Awd And Comparison Vehicles Are Based On 15000 Miles Per Year And Energy Estimates Of $013 Per Kwh For Electricity And $429 Per Gallon Average In North Dakota

This electric SUV produces 201 horsepower in the front-wheel-drive model and 214 hp with all-wheel drive. Neither figure is particularly noteworthy. The same goes for range. Depending on the configuration you get, the bZ4X has an EPA-estimated driving range of 222-252 miles. That’s OK, but other EVs go farther, and we found the bZ4X’s Edmunds-tested real-world range to be disappointing.

On the upside, Toyota has made the bZ4X feel familiar and comfortable. If you like the idea of driving a RAV4 that happens to be electric, this could be the EV for you. It also comes with lots of standard technology and driver assist features. But overall we recommend checking out more highly rated models such as the aforementioned Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y plus the all-new Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Check out our test team’s Expert Rating below to get more detail on where the bZ4X shines and where it falls short.

A Welcome Addition To The Growing E

Pricing for the bZ4X ranges from $43,215 for the front-drive XLE model to $49,995 for the all-wheel-drive Limited, making it competitive with competing electric SUVs and a real bargain compared to the Tesla Model Y. We like the bZ4X’s roomy back seat and boxy SUV-style cargo bay, though it lacks a front trunk, as found on the Tesla Model Y, and feels less like a conventional SUV than the Volkswagen ID4.

Still, for a first-time EV buyer who doesn’t road-trip on a regular basis, the Toyota bZ4X is a very appealing proposition: simple, practical, satisfying to drive, and easy to live with. It’s a welcome addition to the ever-growing EV fleet.

Driving The 2023 Toyota Bz4x

One-pedal driving is becoming a welcome trait in electric vehicles. The level of brake regeneration slows the car down whenever the driver lifts off the accelerator. Sometimes it will bring the vehicle to a complete stop. The 2023 bZ4X doesnt do that.

However, although the brakes take a little getting used to if coming directly from a regular combustion-powered vehicle, they should soon become second nature.

Another special electric vehicle attribute is the availability of maximum torque when accelerating away from standstill. Theres a bit of that with the new bZ4X SUV.

With 124 lb-ft of torque at each end, the all-wheel-drive version can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. Thats breezy rather than blistering. But stop-light drag races are not usually a big consideration for buyers of electric vehicles.

Range, however, is. The best the 2023 bZ4X can manage is 252 miles. Thats not bad, slightly better than the Chevrolet Bolt EUV. But the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, VW ID.4, and Ford Mustang Mach-E are all capable of going farther.

Although the 2023 bZ4X electric SUV is no off-road specialist, all-wheel-drive versions have an X-Mode feature, with settings for Snow/Dirt and Snow/Mud to help cope with slippery conditions, and let the driver concentrate more on steering than anything else. If this X-Mode term sounds familiar, it might be because its a Subaru innovation. The bZ4X and the new Subaru Solterra electric SUV share a platform.
