The Gen 3 wall connector has been available for about ten months now and can be ordered directly from Tesla’s website for $500. That’s a reasonable price for a high-powered, 48-amp EVSE, especially since it’s a WiFI connected smart-charger.
Comparable 48-amp smart chargers like the Enel-X JuiceBox and ChargePoint Home Flex both cost considerably more.
However, the smart-charging features on those units actually work, while Tesla has yet to enable the features promised by the Gen 3 wall connector, and that has to be taken into consideration. The Gen 3 wall connector has been available for nearly a year now, and it’s anyone’s guess when Tesla will actually make the promised features available for use. Like Tesla’s vehicles, the unit can accept over-the-air updates, so activating the features will happen automatically and remotely.

The Best Tesla Wall Connector Yet
With the introduction of the Gen 3 wall connector, Tesla now has a connected smart-charger. Even though it currently doesn’t utilize many features, they will most certainly be added. With the ChargePoint Home, or Enel X JuiceBox, you can pair them with your Amazon Alexa or Google Home assistants and say “Charge my car” or ask “How many miles Ive added? or”How much did I spend on charging my EV last month? and it will respond. We expect Tesla to add that kind of functionality to the wall connector in the future as well as other features.
Plus, more and more utilities are starting demand response programs that will save you money and you need a smart charger to participate. We also expect Tesla to introduce some cool features pairing the wall connector to a Powerwall and home solar array. All of these additions are definitely improvements for the new unit.
The lower power delivery isn’t a problem since none of Tesla’s current cars can accept more than 48-amps. But what if the Cybertruck and its huge battery can? What if tesla decides a 200 kWh battery needs faster home charging to fully replenish overnight so they give it 72-amp onboard chargers? Will they then introduce a new high-powered wall connector? Maybe, but it’s probably still not necessary because in a typical overnight charging session the 48-amp wall connector will add over 100 kWh. That will be good enough for all but the most extreme use cases.

Tesla Wall Connector: Gen 2 Vs Gen 3
Earlier this year, particularly January Tesla unveiled the 3rd generation wall connector. Since then everyone has been trying to know whats good and whats better with this new charger. If your Gen 2 Tesla charger is working just fine, why would you possibly be motivated to consider Gen 3?
We answer all the questions in this review below.
Whats Different?
Appearance. Its almost the first thing you notice with this Gen 3 EV charger. The new electric chargers fresh look comes as a glass front display on a white background, keeping the brand name font and color on its surface. In contrast, the Gen 2 Tesla EV charger has a plastic silver or black cover.
Power. The Gen 2 wall connector has always been a more powerful option, as its able to deliver up to 80 amps of power to your electric car. The Gen 3 however is limited to a maximum of 48 amps. But wait before you conclude, its important to remember that there are no electric vehicles regardless of brand that can charge at over 48 amps. Aside from this being Teslas way of sticking with the maximum power output, electricians can tell you that fewer amps mean less heat. Gen 2 electric chargers have often had overheating and sparking problems because of the heat.
Load sharing. The former charging unit allowed load sharing with up to 4 connected units while the new Gen 3 allows load sharing for up to 16 devices wirelessly.

With these attributes the Gen 3 can now load-share up to 16 devices, and it does so wirelessly, so each unit doesn’t need to be hard-wired together to communicate in order to load-share anymore.

Troubleshooting A Gen 3 Wall Connector
Gen 3 Wall Connectors can be identified by the part number on the side label, which will be displayed as TPN: 1457768-##-#. Customers should take a photo of the side label for their records.

Tesla Launches 3rd Generation Wall Charger Now With Wifi
Tesla quietly launched a new version of its popular Wall Connector yesterday with an updated design and a few new features.
The Tesla Wall Connector allows owners to have a dedicated home charging solution inside or outside their home that can charge at up to 48 amps. The charger now includes a WiFi connection, which enables over-the-air firmware updates, and also opens up the possibility of remote servicing if anything ever goes wrong.
The update also includes a new look with a tempered white faceplate . It still comes with an 18 charging cable, and is compatible with the Model S, Model 3, and Model X.
If you have a Standard Range Plus , or the now discontinued Mid-Range Model 3, youre better off to stick with the included Mobile Charger and installing a 240v outlet with a Nemo 14-50 adapter to charge your vehicle, as these versions of the Model 3 max out at 32 amps.
The new Wall Connector is available on Teslas website for $635 CAD.

Installing A Wall Connector
The third generation Tesla Wall Connector is designed for easy installation.An open wire box with integrated terminals provides plenty of room for landing wires, with entry point options from the top, bottom and rear. Installers can use a smartphone to commission Wall Connector and connect to customer Wi-Fi networks.
Installers should download and fully review the Gen 3 Wall Connector installation manual prior to installation.

Gen 3 Wall Connector Power Sharing
Power sharing is a firmware feature that allows up to six Gen 3 Wall Connectors to share power and charge multiple vehicles at once. Charge power is intelligently distributed across multiple Wall Connectors to minimize charge time for each vehicle and increase energy throughput, while always ensuring that limits imposed by the individual electrical installation are not exceeded.

Connecting A Wall Connector To Wi
Gen 3 Wall Connectors automatically receive firmware updates when connected to Wi-Fi. The first step for all troubleshooting is to ensure a Gen 3 Wall Connector is connected to local Wi-Fi so that it can download the most recent firmware for the best performance and latest features.
Step 1: Prompt Wall Connector to broadcast its Wi-Fi signal.
Press and hold the cable handle button for five seconds to prompt Wall Connector to broadcast its Wi-Fi signal.
Step 2: Ensure Wall Connector is broadcasting.
When energized or the cable handle button is held down for five seconds, the Wall Connector will display a glowing green LED and broadcast its own Wi-Fi access point for 15 minutes.
Step 3: Using your phone, find and select the Wall Connector’s Wi-Fi network.
Find and select the Wall Connectors Wi-Fi named TeslaWallConnector_XXXXXX to connect your phone, tablet or laptop to the Wall Connector.
If the Wall Connector network is not displayed, flip the circuit breaker for the Wall Connector from ‘on’ to ‘off,’ then back to ‘on’ again.
Step 4: Connect to the Wall Connector’s Wi-Fi.
Enter the 12 digit password on the front of the Wall Connector Quick Start Guide to connect your phone or other device to the Wall Connector.
Step 5: Scan the QR code with your phone camera or enter the IP address below into any web browser.
Step 6: Connect to your Wi-Fi to complete the set up of your Wall Connector.
Tesla Eu Gen 3 Wall Connector:

For EU models, Tesla has come up with a Tesla EU Gen 3 Wall Connector. The specially designed charging gadget for the EU models is light in weight and comes with a 7.3 meters cable- the cable provides a full charging overnight for a right beginning. The basic reason behind keeping it light is that the users can accommodate the gadget both indoor and outdoor with convenience. It has a range of electrical systems and mounting options.

You’ll Soon Be Able To Connect Your Wall Connector To Tesla’s App
Tesla’s next update will be update 2022.36 instead of 2022.32. Tesla’s version naming is based on the year and the week number. So update 2022.36 would have been started around the 36th week of 2022.
Tesla traditionally releases an update every four weeks, but sometimes updates can take longer to develop, test, or fix bugs, causing the version number to fall behind the calendar.
Although it doesn’t happen too often, Tesla has skipped update version numbers in the past.
Given that we’re now in the 39th week of the year, Tesla has chosen to skip version 2022.32 and jump directly to 2022.36.
Update 2022.36 is right around the corner and we’re now having our first look at the features included in this update.
