The UK government has boosted support for self-driving cars in recent years, with plans to potentially allow fully autonomous vehicles on roads by 2025. The most recent developments mean that autonomous public transport or delivery vehicles could soon be a reality self-driving cars that may not require anyone on board to have a drivers licence could be on our roads sooner than expected.

Partially self-driving cars have existed for a while, with Tesla having led the way for many years. Dangerous And Unexpected Behavior

In a 2019 Bloomberg survey, hundreds of Tesla owners reported dangerous behaviors with Autopilot, such as phantom braking, veering out of lane, or failing to stop for road hazards. Autopilot users have also reported the software crashing and turning off suddenly, collisions with off ramp barriers, radar failures, unexpected swerving, tailgating, and uneven speed changes.

Ars Technica notes that the brake system tends to initiate later than some drivers expect. One driver claimed that Tesla’s Autopilot failed to brake, resulting in collisions, but Tesla pointed out that the driver deactivated the cruise control of the car prior to the crash. The automatic emergency braking system also initiates sooner than some drivers expect. Tesla issued a recall of 11,728 vehicles due to a communication error that could lead to false forward-collision warnings or unexpected activations of the automatic emergency braking system. The error had been introduced by an October 2021 over-the-air firmware update, and was reversed by another over-the-air update the same month.

Ars Technica also noted that while lane changes may be semi-automatic , the driver must show the car that he or she is paying attention by touching the steering wheel before the car makes the change. In 2019, Consumer Reports noted that Tesla’s automatic lane-change feature is “far less competent than a human driver”.

When you order a Tesla Model Y, or any Tesla vehicle, you have the option to pay for Full Self-Driving capability. It costs $7,000, though the feature is not yet fully functional. Sure, it improves on a regular basis via over-the-air software updates, but it can’t yet drive the car autonomously without any driver intervention, and you can’t send your car off to taxi people around.

The bonus of paying for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving even though it’s not feature-complete is the price will continue to increase into the future. However, no one really has any idea when FSD will be fully functional, or even what “feature-complete FSD” will actually look like.

During the investigation into the fatal crash of May 2016 in Williston, Florida, NHTSA released a preliminary report in January 2017 stating “the Tesla vehicles’ crash rate dropped by almost 40 percent after Autosteer installation.”:10 Disputing this, in 2019, a private company, Quality Control Systems, released their report analyzing the same data, stating the NHTSA conclusion was “not well-founded”. Hardware 2 And Enhanced Autopilot

In October 2016, Autopilot sensors and computing hardware transitioned to hardware version 2 for new cars, the upgraded hardware collectively was called Autopilot 2.0 to distinguish it from the original Autopilot/HW1 vehicles. What’s It Like To Use

Autopilot performed impressively well over a couple of hours of driving on divided highways and some two-lane roads. Full disclosure: This brief test happened in daylight under ideal weather conditions.

After depressing the right stalk twice, Autopilot activated instantly almost every time. Some other systems I’ve tried can take several seconds to lock into the lane lines. Braking or knocking the stalk upward deactivates the system.

Autopilot confidently kept the SUV centered in its lane without any wavering or jitters. It followed bends in the road nicely, but I found that it took some curves too fast for comfort. It reacted naturally to other cars, slowing down with traffic and speeding up as soon as things cleared up. One can easily set the cruising speed using the steering wheel’s right scroll wheel. The few times that another car merged in front of the Tesla, Autopilot responded well.

A handy visualization in the car’s touchscreen shows what the vehicle sees, including other cars and traffic cones. When Autopilot is switched on, the screen displays a blue steering-wheel icon and highlights the lane lines in blue. But I wish the Model Y had a display in front of the driver. That way, one could view Autopilot’s status including the set speed and whether it detects the car ahead without looking away from the road.

Tesla just bragged with what the European car safety testing agency Euro NCAP called “a truly outstanding, record-breaking Model Y rating.” The Model Y from Giga Berlin – the one with the extra airbags – earned the highest ever Overall Score of 92% among all vehicles tested with the European New Car Assessment Program’s new and more demanding crash test procedure. “Tesla have shown that nothing but the best is good enough for them, and we hope to see them continue to aspire to that goal in the future,” said NCAPs Secretary General as the Model Y earned its highest score of 98% in exactly the Safety Assist component that engages the radar-less Tesla Vision kit.

Contrary to the ex-VW CEO’s opinion that higher levels of autonomous driving need LiDAR in addition to cameras in order to function properly, Elon Musk is convinced that Tesla Vision can get around solely on its camera-based Autopilot system. Starting last year, Tesla transitioned all its vehicles to the Vision software and hardware and now all of its new cars are coming without a radar. At the time, Tesla promised that the transition won’t affect the safety rating of its EVs.

Lane selection still has issues. Most of the time its ok, but occasionally, it does strange things like changing into the right lane momentarily, then back to the left when there is an upcoming left-hand turn, noted FSD Beta tester Sandy.

Tesla Recalled Vehicles Last Month

The incident comes after Tesla recalled almost 12,000 cars last month due to an FSD issue. The company released an FSD beta 10.3 update on October 23rd, but some drivers soon discovered issues relating to their vehicles forward collision warning and emergency braking features. The company temporarily rolled users back to an earlier build before issuing a patch. Of course, Teslas software is explicitly being offered as a beta, so its unclear whether the company can or will be held liable.

Whatever standards Tesla will be held to for its nascent technology, its worth noting regulators are paying attention. This latest action by the NHTSA follows a probe into Tesla cars reportedly crashing into emergency vehicles while in Autopilot mode. Its also of note that this is not even the first investigation relating to FSD – the California Department of Motor Vehicles is investigatingTesla over its use of the phrase full self-driving and whether it amounts to false advertising.

A tour of YouTube shows that Tesla is experimenting with technology that goes beyond mere driver assistance, with untrained customers behind the wheel. The DMV requires autonomous car developers to use trained test drivers.

In some videos, the Tesla FSD cars make turns, stop for traffic lights and avoid pedestrians. In other videos, they drive into oncoming trucks in the wrong lane, steer toward pedestrians, and in one case, mistake the moon for a yellow traffic signal.

DMV regulations on autonomous vehicles include rules that bar a company from marketing a vehicle as autonomous when its not. The DMV began a review of Teslas Full Self-Driving Capability under that rule in May 2021. That led to a preliminary complaint filed against Tesla last July. The agency says the case has been in the discovery phase for the last four months, and declines to state how long that phase will last.

DMV director Steve Gordon has refused to speak with The Times or any other media outlet on the subject of autonomous vehicle regulation for the past two years. Tesla lawyers did not respond to request for comment. Musk did not answer a tweet seeking comment. Tesla disbanded its media relations team several years ago.

There is one stop sign in St. George, Utah, coming up 1650 W and turning left or right onto busy Snow Canyon Parkway where FSD will consistently run the stop sign. This behavior persists with FSD v10.8. My Tesla will stop legally at all other stop signs that I have encountered.

Solution: Turn off FSD and make the turn manually.

Message to Elon Musk and his FSD software engineers: PLEASE FIX THIS!!

This is very dangerous, and I dont even know how it is possible for FSD to fail only in this specific case. If anyone at Tesla is reading this or anyone knows how to get a message to them, please let them know. I would be very happy to work with them to resolve this issue.
