Giga Texas Model Y Awd Gets $2000 Price Increase

Tesla Model Y 2022 review – the BEST electric SUV?

The all-new Model Y made at Giga Texas may not yet be available to order on the Teslas Design Studio, but it has not been able to escape the companys recent price increases.

Shortly after the new All-Wheel Drive variant with 4680 battery cells was announced at Giga Texas, internal documentation revealed it would be priced at $59,990 USD. That was $3,000 USD cheaper than the Long Range , which at the time started at $62,990 USD.

After the most recent price increase last week, the LR is now $3,000 more expensive, starting at $65,990.

According to offers being made to existing reservation holders, the only way in which the 4680 Model Y is currently being sold, it received a $2,000 price increase and now starts at $61,990. Reddit user phantom17373 shared a screenshot of a base Model Y AWD with the new price.

Note that the $1,000 more refers to the difference in price between his existing reservation and the Model Y AWD, and not the price increase.

Giving an indication of just how much inflation has increased prices over the last few years, the Model Y AWD is now just $7,430 cheaper than what Tesla was selling the Model S for in 2020 at the meme-worthy price of $69,420.

Tesla is not the only automaker increasing their prices however. Over the weekend GM raised the price of the Hummer EV by $6,250, citing an increase in the price of commodity parts.

Tesla Giga Texas Achieves A New Milestone Produces 1000 Model Y In A Week

Tesla has achieved a new production milestone. The EV manufacturer’s Giga Texas plant that is ramping up the production of the Model Y crossover has achieved the milestone of producing 1,000 units every week, claims Drive Tesla. This same rate of production was achieved by the Giga Berlin Brandenburg plant in June this year. Since the production of the Model Y started at Giga Texas back in April this year, it took four months to reach the milestone.

The report has revealed a photo shared on Snapchat by a Tesla employee. The photo shows the shape of the Tesla Texas plant, the company’s logo, the number of 1,000 cars produced and the signatures of the employees involved in the ramp-up.

Tesla Starts Selling Long Range Giga Texas Built Refreshed Model Y With 4680 Cells For A 95k Discount

Tesla began initial deliveries of the refreshed Model Y, with 4680 cells and a structural battery pack, at the so-called Cyber Rodeo party held to mark the opening of Teslas newest factory in Austin Texas.

At the Giga Texas opening ceremony, Tesla did not share the specs of the refreshed Model Y, and all the vehicles at the time went to Tesla employees.

However, soon after we were able to learn a lot about the refreshed Model Y which is the first vehicle to come with Teslas purportedly revolutionary 4680 cells and a structural battery pack.

According to Teslas Battery Day presentation, the 4680 cells, and structural battery pack design are expected to increase vehicle range by as much as 54%, decrease the weight of the vehicle, improve acceleration, and overall be cheaper and more sustainable to produce.

Given Teslas claims, we were expecting when the refreshed Model Y arrives to have a 475 miles range and a 0 to 60 time of under 3 seconds.

However, based on information shared by owners of the refreshed vehicle, we learned that the new Model Y has a 279-mile EPA range, 5 seconds 0 to 60 times, and a starting price of $59,990.

This was somewhat of a shock to Tesla enthusiasts and has even led some to conclude Teslas Battery Day presentation was a complete farce.

Tesla Model Y Standard Awd Review

How Much Do Tesla Model Y Cost

In addition to the 4680 cells and a structural battery, the new Model Y Standard AWD variant has some other perks too. For example, the carpet of Model Ys built at Giga Texas is a bit thicker than the ones made at the Fremont factory in California .

One small but useful addition is the shelf Tesla has installed inside the trunk of the Model Y Standard AWD. The owner checked it in his review and found it to be sturdy enough for regular use and storage under it.

The built quality of Model Y electric SUVs coming out of Giga Texas also looks better for a factory that has just started production. Tesla has of course learned from its past mistakes and is certainly using the engineering experience to make better cars with almost perfect panel gaps all around.

In the follow-up articles, we will be covering the charging and performance of the 4680 cells in Texas-made Model Ys, so stay tuned. Lets watch the review by Spoken Reviews / YouTube who is one of the first lucky owners of a Tesla Model Y made at the Tesla Gigafactory in Austin, Texas.

Tesla Expands Availability Of New Texas

At the Cyber Rodeo event last month, Tesla delivered its first made-in-Texas Model Y vehicles.

We noted that it was strange that Tesla didnt reveal any details, like specs and pricing, about the new version of the electric SUV.

It is equipped with the new 4680 battery cells and structural battery pack technology, which is resulting in a significantly different car with different specs in the new Model Y trim.

Yet, Tesla never listed this new trim for sale, and all we know about it was through an EPA filing that revealed it has 279 miles of range and an all-wheel-drive powertrain. It is billed as a Model Y Standard Range AWD.

We suspected that Tesla is only delivering the vehicle to employees for now through internal deals, which would explain why it never showed up on its website.

We were later able to confirm that based on a communication Tesla sent to employees and obtained by Electrek.

It revealed that the new Texas-built Model Y Standard starts at $59,990, has a 0-60 mph acceleration in five seconds, and is equipped with a few new features, including a magnetic center console armrest and a parcel shelf.

Last month, Tesla started offering the new Model Y to some customers who had other versions of the Model Y on order. Customers were offered a faster delivery if they decided to downgrade to the Model Y All-Wheel Drive built at Gigafactory Texas.

That has been the only way Tesla has been selling the new vehicle to the public until now.

Tesla Giga Texas Releases Model Y Lr Vins 279

Tesla Model Y Long Range reservation holders are receiving VINs for their vehicles this week, with delivery dates expected next week. Tesla told one reservation holder to expect their Model Y delivery between June 28 to July 1.

A Tesla Model Y Long Range reservation holder contacted Teslarati about his upcoming delivery. He ordered a Model Y Long Range and noticed that his vehicle would be coming from Giga Texas.

The soon-to-be Model Y LR owner received his VIN on June 23. His VIN contained the letters NA, which means the Model Y will be coming from Gigafactory Texas.

He ordered a 5-seater, Deep Blue Metallic Model Y LR with 19 Gemini wheels and an All Black Premium interior. The Model Y LR appears equipped with Basic Autopilot. The Model Y LR reservation holders received an estimated delivery date between June 27 to July 03.

Given the VINs that are being released, Tesla Giga Texas seems revved up to make a big splash next quarter. Demand for the Giga Texas Model Y seems strong. Tesla reportedly increased the price of of the Texas-made 279-mile Model Y AWD by $2,000 to $61,990 as well based on observations from EV enthusiasts online.

In the Q1 2022 Shareholders Letter, Tesla stated that Giga Texas would produce Model Y vehicles with both 2170 and 4680 cells. However, Giga Texas initial builds will be the Model Y equipped with 4680 batteries.

Still Not Listed Directly On Tesla’s Website

The Tesla Model Y version, produced on a limited scale at the Tesla Giga Texas plant, has not avoided price increases, which recently rolled through Tesla’s lineup.

According to Reddit user phantom17373, the Made-in-Texas Tesla Model Y now starts at $61,990, which is $2,000 more compared to the $59,990 reported in April.

At the time, the MIT Model Y was $3,000 less expensive than the Model Y Long Range AWD from California. The Model Y LR AWD recently become more expensive by $3,000, which means that now the difference is $4,000 .

The MIT Model Y is not listed on Tesla’s website for the general public, but according to various reports, the manufacturer displays the offer to reservation holders, who might be interested in selecting this version over the LR AWD car.

However, we must remember that the EPA range of the MIT Tesla Model Y is slightly lower than the Model Y Long Range AWD .

Another interesting finding is that recently, the new MIT Tesla Model Y emerged on Tesla’s existing inventory website, but those were a bit more expensive than the one shown above.

Tesla is very likely playing the game to maximize revenues and sell available cars at a higher price, compared to cars in the design studio, which require months or even a year of waiting.

Let’s summarize what we unofficially know/expect about the new MIT Tesla Model Y:

  • price of $61,990
  • 279 miles of EPA range or 269 miles with 20″ wheels
  • 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds
  • top speed of 135 mph
  • structural battery pack

Who Wears The Ev Crown

The Polestar 3 comes right out of the gate loaded to the gills with features in an effort to punch the Model Y directly in the jaw in the fight for segment supremacy. On the outside, the Tesla Model Y has taken styling cues from a beluga whale while “Polestar” went in the Blade Runner and “Cyberpunk 2077” direction. Both EVs are decidedly “futuristic” looking.

Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Tesla Ramps Up Gigafactory Texas To Thousands Of Units Per Week Adds New Model Y Version

Tesla North

Tesla has managed to ramp up production at Gigafactory Texas to thousands of units per week, adding production of the Model Y Long Range on top of the Standard Range version.

The automaker is being secretive about data on its production ramp at Gigafactory Texas.

It is one of Teslas most important projects, as it invested billions of dollars in the giant factory, and it will not recoup that money until the plant reaches volume production.

After slowly starting production of the Model Y late in 2021, Tesla has been gradually ramping up and started deliveries of Texas-built Model Y vehicles in April.

The ramp up has been difficult as Tesla has been building the Model Ys at Gigafactory Texas with its new 4680 battery cell and structural battery pack, which have been the bottleneck.

Tesla has been aiming to produce 10,000 vehicles per week at the factory by the end of the year.

The current production rate of Gigafactory Texas has been unknown, but it was believed to be less than a thousand Model Y vehicles per week.

Now Electrek has obtained inside information for the first time that gives us a better idea of Teslas production rate at the new factory.

One source said that Tesla is making as many as 5,000 vehicles available to deliver per week from Gigafactory Texas, but its not clear if thats a sustainable rate. Another source said that Tesla is capable of producing at least 2,000 Model Ys per week at the plant since adding the Model Y Long Range to the mix.

Driving The 2022 Tesla Model Y

The Model Y has the engaging performance thats become a hallmark of the Tesla brand. Its dual-motor electric drivetrain delivers instant torque to all four wheels resulting in quick acceleration with a 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds in the Long Range model and just 3.5 seconds for the Performance model.

On top of a higher top speed and a quicker 0-60 time, the Performance model adds performance brakes and a lowered suspension. It comes together to create an exciting driving experience without sacrificing its practicality. The Performance model still has an electric range of over 300 miles.

While we like the exciting performance of the Model Y even in the base trim its ride is a bit firm for a vehicle considered a luxury SUV. If you prioritize a smooth, supple ride in a premium crossover, you may want to consider a hybrid luxury SUV like the Lexus RX Hybrid.

Polestar 3 Vs Tesla Model Y: Electric Suvs Compared

My NEW 2022 Tesla Model Y | I Can’t Believe It

Luxury compact SUVs have been all the rage for the past few years now so it’s only logical to see EV makers following the trend. The Tesla Model Y has been out on the roads for a couple years now and serves as the one of the first real entries into the compact luxury EV segment. Priced at over $58,000 for a base model and well over $86,000 with all of the options, it certainly isn’t an inexpensive EV. With 21-inch wheels and Tesla’s much maligned “Full Self-Driving” capability, it’s quite firmly in the luxury EV segment.

With a dual motor “Performance” configuration and a zero-to-60 time of under four seconds, the Model Y is no slouch either. Today, Polestar, Volvo’s EV spin-off announced the arrival of its Polestar 3 electric SUV. The Tesla Model Y may have met its match when it comes to the segment it practically created.
