The Y debuted for 2020 as a pioneer of the all-electric small SUV class. It’s similar to Tesla’s Model 3 small sedan but provides a roomier interior for both people and cargo. It even has an option for a third-row seat, albeit a tiny one. When it comes to providing a pleasing mix of space, range and performance for an EV, the Y is a standout.
For 2022, Tesla is making some small changes to the Model Y. These range from a new, lighter 12-volt lithium-ion battery to laminated rear windows to better insulate the cabin from noise. But more significant changes are also rumored to be coming for the Y. Specifically, Tesla could be changing the design of the Y’s main battery pack to a structurally integrated design known as 4680. How this new battery pack will influence the Y’s capability or performance is yet to be determined, but we’ll update this section as we learn more.
In the meantime, the Model Y faces off against fresh competition. The Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Volkswagen ID.4 have all debuted recently, and each one has appealing qualities that might win you over. Check out our test team’s full Expert Rating below to help you decide which EV is going to be best for you.

Tesla Doesnt Follow Tradition
Tesla doesnt follow the traditional model for updating its vehicles. Instead, it frequently introduces changes to its lineup mid-cycle.
For this review, we tested the Model Y Standard Range RWD that the company positioned as the entry-level version with the shortest range. When it launched in January 2021, this model had a starting price tag of $42,000 and an estimated range of 244 miles. But within a month, the company dropped the price to $39,990 andreportedly because mercurial CEO Elon Musk wasn’t happy with its rangeremoved the Model Y Standard Range RWD from its online configuration shortly after. This variant is available off menu while supplies last and is still for sale in China.
Aside from dropping the Standard Range model, the current 2022 Model Y lineupconsisting of the Long Range and Performance AWD trimshasn’t changed much from the 2021 models. Estimated driving range for the Long Range is up this year, to 330 miles when equipped with the standard 19-inch wheels. Picking the more attractive 20 inchers drops range to a claimed 318 miles per charge.
The Model Y Doesnt Just Offer Long Range Its Remarkably Efficient In How It Uses Its Energy

Heres where the Model Y pulls away from its electric crossover counterparts, offering an estimated range of 330 miles for the Long Range and 303 miles for the Performance. That earns it a full 10 points in this category.
Both variants feature the same battery pack that comes with 80-kwh of usable capacity. The Long Range only uses 28 kwh per 100 miles and the Performance just 30 kwh per 100 miles, and this efficiency is what gives the duo such great range estimates.
On a 240-volt Level 2 charger, the Model Y gains back about 45 miles of range per hour of charging. Teslas wide ranging V3 Supercharger network is much faster, pumping 162 miles of range back in 15 minutes, though Tesla no longer offers free charging with the Model Y.

Tesla Model Y Long Range Vs Performance: Which Electric Suv Is The Better Buy
Weighing the pros and cons of the new 2020 Tesla Model Y trims.
Range or performance? It used to be that electric car buyers had to choose between efficiency and fun. The 2020 Tesla Model Y proves that those days are long gone. Tesla currently offers up two trims for the Model Y Dual Motor: the Model Y Long Range and the Model Y Performance, the latter of which is also available with a higher-performance upgrade package at no extra charge.
We’ve driven both the Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance with the Performance Upgrade Package extensively back-to-back. Although we like both, it’s safe to say that right now, the sweet spot right now is the Model Y Long Range.
In order to understand why, it’s a worthwhile endeavor to quickly look at the specs. The Model Y Long Range is the current entry-level model in the Model Y lineup . Starting at $54,190, it sports a front and rear motor that combine to make 384 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. The combo is good for an EPA-estimated 316 miles of range and an impressive 4.6 second 0-60 mph time.
To transform the Long Range into the Model Y Performance, Tesla adds a new spoiler and performs a rear motor swap and some tuning changes. Starting at $62,190, it gets a combined 456 hp and 497 lb-ft of torque and has a 315-mile EPA-estimated range. Yep, you lose one mile of range for all that added power, which isn’t utilized on the EPA test cycle.

Interior Comfort And Cargo
The Model Y doesn’t come with the larger Model X crossover’s complicated Falcon Wing doors its interior is mostly carryover from the Model 3 sedan. Like that car, it is largely free of buttons and relies mostly on a large infotainment display centered on a simple dashboard. An all-glass roof lends an airy ambience to the cabin but is heavily tinted to avoid roasting occupants in Sun Belt states. The optional third row of seats adds a steep $3000 to the Model Y’s pricewe can’t imagine they’ll be spacious enough for adults to ride in comfort.

When Will The Tesla Model Y Be Available
There has still been no formal confirmation of when the Model Y become available in Australia.
The opening of the gigafactory in Germany will free up production capacity in Shanghai where Australian-bound Model Ys will be made.
Due to ongoing supply chain issues and production delays, deliveries could occur later in 2022 or likely 2023.
How Much Horsepower Does A Tesla Model X Have
The Model X is another best-seller on the list of EVs. It is one of the plushest mid-sized CUVs on the planet but it also packs quite a punch.
Unlike the other models mentioned on this list, this car is only available in all-wheel-drive versions. Its two motors give a combined power output of around 670 hp and 713 lb-ft torque.
If thats not enough then the Plaid version will provide you with a combined power output of 1020 horsepower. this is because it has an extra motor in the rear, hence its got 3 of them.
The Model X is not as quick as youd think at around 8-10 seconds to 62 mph from a standstill. The Plaid model on the other hand is a monster that can do the same in just 2.5 seconds. It is hence the quickest Crossover Utility Vehicle in the world today.

Ev Motor Power And Performance
The Model Y lineup no longer includes a Standard Range cost-leader trim. No loss there the Model Y’s Long Range and Performance models are more compelling than a Standard Range trim anyway. Thanks to a generous Car and Driver reader, we were able to test an all-wheel-drive Long Range, which zipped from zero-to-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, a mere 0.4 second behind our long-term Model 3 sedan. The Performance model delivered an even quicker 3.6-second blast to 60 mph in our testing. While the Model Y offers impressive acceleration, it doesn’t deliver the same level of driving satisfaction as the Model 3. The SUV body creates a higher center of gravity, which dulls the sharp edge of the Model 3’s handling, and the Y’s ride is considerably rougher over road imperfections as well.

Where This Vehicle Ranks
Buying an electric car is all about driving range, and the Long Range and Performance models offer 330 and 303 miles of range, respectively. We’d go with the Long Range, which maximizes driving range while offering plenty of performance. There are few ways to customize your Model Y, and only five colors for the exteriorthree of which cost extra. Those seeking the optional third row of seats can add them for an additional $3000.
Battery Power Charge Times And Range

Every 2022 Tesla Model Y is equipped with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive. The standard Long Range model has an impressive range of 330 miles and a 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds. The Performance model drops the range to 303 miles and improves acceleration to a 3.5-second 0-60 time.

St Vs Lr Is One Thing But Maybe The More Affordable Tesla Model Y Was Introduced Actually To Compete With Other Models
Tesla recently introduced the Standard Range version of the Model Y, which was announced at the beginning, but then removed from the online design studio. It’s kind of surprising, especially since Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that 250 miles of range is a new minimum.
Well, the SR version of the Model Y is really here , with less than 250 miles of range, so let’s take a look at how it compares to the Long Range version.
Those two versions are basically all the same, aside from battery capacity and drive specs.
The main advantage of the SR is its price – $8,000 or close to 16% lower than LR. On the other hand, the range is 82 miles or a quarter lower and it’s a bit slower. If you don’t need this additional range, you can simply save $8,000.

Tesla Model Y Pricing And Specs Leaked
Pricing for the Tesla Model Y rear-wheel drive and Performance variants have been leaked to in a report from Chasing Cars.
Revealed for “corporate and industry customers”, the base Model Y RWD will start from $67,990 before on-road costs, while the flagship Performance will be priced from $98,172 before on-roads.
However, the publication didn’t leak the price of the coveted Long Range variant, which potentially suggests it won’t be sold here at launch.
The base Model Y price is $4000 higher than the equivalent entry-level Model 3. This gap increases, however, after government EV incentives are factored in.
Additionally, the Model Y RWD small SUV will have more power but slower acceleration than the Model 3 equivalent.
Driving range for the Model Y will be lower than the equivalent Model 3 sedan variants due to the heavier weight, although it features the same aerodynamic 0.23 drag coefficient.
Detailed information on the specifications and features can be viewed here.
Is The Tesla Model Y A Good Car
The Tesla Model Y is an electric SUV that is a cutting-edge alternative to models such as the BMW iX3, Audi Q4 e-tron and the forthcoming Mercedes EQB.
Based on the hugely popular Model 3, its a bit like if someone uploaded a picture of a Model 3 into Photoshop and started stretching its proportions. Its longer and ever so slightly wider, but noticeably taller, meaning it looks more like a shrunken Model X.
The extra size means, unsurprisingly, extra space. The Model Y was first shown as a seven-seat model directly rivalling the EQB, but its only sold as a five-seater for the time being Tesla wont say when three-row models will go on sale.
Still, those in the rear get more head and legroom than in a Model 3, and all the seats are raised up to give a better view out. It also offers a huge 1,869-litre load bay with the rear seats down, which is more than you get even in the roomy Skoda Enyaq. You get a panoramic glass sunroof as standard to make the interior feel light and airy, too.
Like every other Tesla including the Model 3, the Model Y has a giant infotainment screen dominating the dashboard, and very little in the way of physical switchgear. The screen is in a landscape style , is 15-inches in size and used to control almost all the cars systems even the door mirrors. It takes a bit of getting used to, but is one of the best screens on the market in terms of graphics and response.

Kris Rifa Drives A Model Y In Germany And What Better Way To Spend The Time Than Top Speed Testing
The TeslaModel Y hasnt gone into production in Germany yet, but there are already Model Ys in the country and around Europe. Official deliveries of the model on the Old Continent only started this summer, so the Model Y is not a particularly common sight yet.
Kris Rifa drove a Model Y Long Range from Norway to Germany and while he was there, he also took it on the autobahn to do some high-speed testing. Before he got there, though, he drove the vehicle on a bumpier road and this highlighted the Model Ys quite hard ride .
Once speed increases, though, the vehicle feels more settled and seems very at home traveling at typical autobahn speeds, although Kris points out hat over some rougher sections, its still bumper than a comparable German car. It has no problem accelerating to its top speed of 217 km/h and once it reaches its top speed, the power usage bar drops to 60 percent, suggesting that the vehicle actually has a lot more to give at the top end.
The Model Y Long Range has a dual-motor setup producing 351 horsepower, good enough to sprint to sixty in 4.8 seconds. The more powerful Performance version has 462 horsepower, the sprint time drops to 3.5 seconds and top speed goes up to 249 km/h .
