When it comes to all-wheel drive systems, Tesla is definitely one of the most popular options on the market. But how long does Tesla’s all-wheel drive system last?
In general, all-wheel drive systems are designed to last for the life of the vehicle. However, Tesla’s all-wheel drive system is a bit different. Tesla’s all-wheel drive system is an active all-wheel drive system, meaning that it is constantly adjusts the power distribution to the wheels based on driving conditions. Because of this, the all-wheel drive system does have some moving parts that can wear out over time.
Tesla recommends that the all-wheel drive system be serviced every 12,500 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. During this service, the all-wheel drive system will be inspected and any worn parts will be replaced.

Features Of The Tesla Model Y
You either love or hate the tech that Tesla fills its car with, because the minimal design and lifestyle focus of the language and features doesnt suit everyone. The only options are paint colours and wheel size.Given the fact that Tesla issues software updates across its models and versions, its unsurprising that all the stuff inside the Model Y is identical to the Model 3. One huge tablet-style screen controls everything, including the functionality of the only two switches in the car, which are located on the steering wheel. We love the lifestyle focus of everything, such as dog mode, which displays a large message on the screen when you walk away from the car, explaining to passers-by that youll be back soon and the dog is being fed temperature-controlled air via the vents. The digital entertainment available includes a wide selection of karaoke tunes and online games for the kids. Our only gripe is that sometimes, you just want to turn a button, for example, to adjust a wing mirror, and going through several swipes of the screen doesnt feel the safest or quickest way to manage those functions.

Performance & Range: 8/10
While Tesla doesnt officially release information regarding its battery sizing and motor outputs, quick internet research suggests that the entry-level Model Ys electric motor pumps out around 220kW of power and 440Nm of torque, and that power is drawn from a 62.kWh lithium ion battery pack mounted under the floor. Thats good enough for a quick 6.9-second 0-100km/h sprint time and the claimed range for the entry-level Model Y is 455km.
Charging the Model Y from 10 to 80 per cent can be done in as little as 18 minutes using one of Teslas Supercharger network, around 73 minutes using a 50kW charger or around eight hours using a wall box. Teslas Supercharger network is huge there are 51 sites across Australia with more than 260 individual DC fast charger, with another 20 sites coming soon.
Tesla claims that the Model Y RWD will travel up to 455km on a full charge, and while we didnt have the car long enough to test the full range, our previous testing with the Model 3 suggests that Teslas claim is fairly accurate. Having said that, we wish that the Model Y Long Range which is on sale overseas were offered in Australia as it would give buyers an all-wheel drive option without having to go up to the Performance. In Europe, the Model Y Long Ranges claimed range is 532km, a full 77km more than the RWD that we have here.

Buyers can drive their old ride to the delivery center, sign over that one and drive home in their new Tesla.
The Model Y is more affordable than the Jaguar I-Pace, which starts at about $70k. The Audi e-tron Sportback comes in around $67k. The Polestar 2, an offshoot of Volvo, is in the more reasonable $61k ballpark but can only cover 233 miles. The all-new Ford Mustang Mach-E crossover might also be an intriguing alternative, with a range of 300 miles and prices starting at $44k.
The Model Y was all-new last year, so resale values are still unknown. But the Model S does extremely well in this regard.

The Y debuted for 2020 as a pioneer of the all-electric small SUV class. It’s similar to Tesla’s Model 3 small sedan but provides a roomier interior for both people and cargo. It even has an option for a third-row seat, albeit a tiny one. When it comes to providing a pleasing mix of space, range and performance for an EV, the Y is a standout.
For 2022, Tesla is making some small changes to the Model Y. These range from a new, lighter 12-volt lithium-ion battery to laminated rear windows to better insulate the cabin from noise. But more significant changes are also rumored to be coming for the Y. Specifically, Tesla could be changing the design of the Y’s main battery pack to a structurally integrated design known as 4680. How this new battery pack will influence the Y’s capability or performance is yet to be determined, but we’ll update this section as we learn more.
In the meantime, the Model Y faces off against fresh competition. The Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Volkswagen ID.4 have all debuted recently, and each one has appealing qualities that might win you over. How Long Does It Take To Charge A Model Y
Much like the Tesla Model Y pricing, several factors contribute to how quickly you can get your EV recharged and back on the road.
To begin, make sure you have a clear understanding of EV charging standards and how they vary.
After that, you should be able to better understand the levels of charging, and what sort of times you can expect from each of them with your Tesla.
Charge times can and will vary, but heres a breakdown of Tesla charge speeds:
- AC Level 1: 20-40 hours
- Level 2 : 8-12 hours
- DC fast charger Level 3 : 15-25 minutes
The Tesla Supercharger network remains the best choice for long road trips or when you need a quick charge to get to your destination. That being said, the Supercharger networks massive direct current is not recommended for daily charging.

The Performance will hit 60 mph in around 3.1 seconds, making it quicker than bona fide sports cars like the Toyota GR Supra 3.0 and Nissan Z. Of course, the range-topping sprinter cant go as far as the Long Range trim, considering the Long Range will cover around 38 more miles on a single charge.

Ride & Handling: 8/10
As we found out in our recent Model Y versus Kia EV6 comparison, the 2022 Tesla Model Y is entirely competent in the ride and handling department, though its not perfect, with a firm ride quality that makes it feel heavier than it is. Bigger bumps can crash into the cabin and it can fidget at lower speeds even on the smaller wheels of our test car but the body control is great, and the handling is positive as well, with its well balanced chassis. The steering is largely feel-free but its well-weighted and very quick.
Road noise levels are pleasingly low, while the visibility is excellent. Getting used to the speedometer being on the central screen can take some time and one of our testers to become carsick but having the blind-spot camera just next to the steering wheel is great. Teslas Autopilot system is also pretty good and we experienced no faults with it on well lit highways with good line markings, its great. Just dont expect it to drive you everywhere.
How Much Does It Cost To Insure The 2022 Tesla Model Y
The Model Y costs a little more to insure than most of its peers. According to our data, a typical 30-year-old female driver with a clean record can expect an average annual premium to start at around $3,120, though this averages all 50 states. Based on our research it should align with other similar EVs. A Ford Mustang Mach-E owner might pay up to $2,680 per year, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is $2,200 and the smaller Jaguar I-Pace is $3,100.
