Tesla Model X Economy And Emissions
Being all-electric, the Tesla Model X uses no petrol or diesel, and has zero tailpipe emissions. It has an official NEDC range of 351 miles. One journey that we undertook was 190 miles, with around 100 miles at 70mph motorway speeds, and around 80 miles on A and B-roads at 60mph. The remaining 10 miles were on country roads and up and down a steep muddy hill. When we started the journey, the car displayed a range of 282 miles. When we returned home after 190 miles we had a range of 45 miles left so resulting in a real-world range of 235 miles. This was mostly conducted at high speeds, so the predicted range of 282 miles is likely to be possible if driven more slowly.
We covered around 600 miles during the entire week in the Model X. Although we have a Type 1 7kW charger at home , and a dedicated 3 pin socket for EV charging , neither of these were of use for the Model X, so we had to search out Superchargers. The satnav shows clearly where they are, the only problem is that the closest Supercharger to home, at a hotel on the M56 South of Warrington, only has two bays, and both times that we dropped in here there was a queue of Teslas waiting to charge so a half-hour charge took one and half hours resulting in being late for appointments.
We also dropped into Burtonwood services on the M62 North of Warrington, where there was a delightful vision of 10 shiny new Superchargers but very disappointingly, none of them were working yet.

A Unique Windshield And Interior

In contrast, the gigantic windshield that extends uninterrupted over the front passengers’ heads just seems cooler each time we drive a Model X. A UV-protective gradient tint starting approximately where a conventional windshield header would be keeps occupants from feeling like ants under a magnifying glass on sunny days. Should that not be enough glare protection, a visor deploys from the A-pillar and connects to the rearview mirror. A thin, black wiring cover between the mirror and the header is the only aspect of the windshield design we’d deem unfortunate. The view out is truly spectacular.
Among the Model X’s many other breaks from convention are its front doors that slowly motor open as one approaches them with the key fob on their person the omission of an on/off switch and the incorporation of most functions into the giant touchscreen, which is not universally loved by the C/D staff and even Tesla-phile owners acknowledge can be distracting.

Ludicrous Range Instead Of Ludicrous Speed
Without the P tacked on to its badge, the Model S 100D puts emphasis on going farther between recharges rather than on drag-strip launches. The 100 in the name denotes the biggest battery pack that Tesla offers, a 100.0-kWh unit that resides under the floor of the car, while the D signifies the dual electric motorsone in the front and one in the rearthat supply a total of 483 horsepower. Without the P100D’s extra grunt or those electron-sapping Ludicrous or launch-control acceleration modes, the 100D boasts the longest EPA-estimated range of any current Teslaand of any electric carwith its 335-mile rating.
The only other EV to crest the 300-mile mark, according to the EPA, is also made by Tesla: the Model 3, at 310 miles. Just as with a gasoline-powered car, these numbers are calculated using the cars’ results in the EPA’s test cycles, where the Model S 100D achieves 101 MPGe in the city and 102 MPGe combined and on the highway. As with a gasoline car, your mileage may vary, as it did in our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test, where the Model S couldn’t quite match the government’s result and got 91 MPGe. Still, our testing proved that it’s possible to cruise at 75 mph for 270 miles in the Model S. Though that’s nearly 20 percent short of the EPA’s number, it’s by far the best of any EV we’ve tested.

Price And Model Range
Our Tesla Model X 100D cost £87,200. On top of this were options, including Midnight Silver Metallic Paint , Black Premium/Light Headliner , Premium Upgrades Package , Seven Seat Interior , Destination & Doc Fee , taking the total price to £100,600, after the £4,500 UK government plug-in vehicle grant. Unusually for an EV, the Tesla Model X can tow up to 2,250 kg.
There are four Model X variants: the 75D with a 75 kWh battery, giving an NEDC range of 259 miles the 90D, with a 90 kWh battery, giving an NEDC range of 303 miles the 100D with a 100 kWh battery, giving an NEDC range of 351 miles and the P100D, which also has a 100 kWh battery, but with a 0-60mph time of 2.9 seconds, so the range is slightly less than the 100D, at 336 miles.
Model X prices start from £75,400 for the 75D. You can lease one from £641 per month, and it has a low 9% Benefit in Kind tax rate.
Tesla calculates that the Model X will save you £5,900 in fuel compared to a petrol car over five years.

Home And Destination Charging

Used Tesla Model X 100d For Sale
Coming out at the top end for battery capacity on the first production run of the Model X, the 100 kWh lithium ion battery, dual motor 100D delivered a driving range of up to 295 miles per charge. With a modest 0 60 mph acceleration of 4.7 seconds , the all wheel drive Model X 100D made family rides in a sport utility crossover a lot more interesting.
While the Falcon Wing rear door assembly remained a contentious feature in the Model X that critics either loved or loved to hate, the doors lent a sci-fi cool factor to the 100D that got the Model X into the publics eye faster than reports of its stellar safety rating. Tesla Model X Driving Experience
Just like opening and closing the doors, the entire approach to unlocking and starting your car has been turned on its head by Tesla. You cant unlock the Model X , and you cant switch it on, as its already on. So all you do is press down the gear selector on the right hand side of the steering column to engage Drive. Its a shame that this gear selector is obviously stolen from a Mercedes, and isnt something innovative and high tech, ie. more in keeping with the rest of the car. And theres no way of changing gears manually.
If its safe to do so, if you floor the accelerator, youll experience a sensation that is more appropriate to a supercar than a two and half tonne SUV. Except that virtually all supercars will deafen you and anyone else whos around at the time yet the Model X is capable of 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds almost silently. Supercars also have fluctuating levels of torque, whereas the Model X just rides the wave of 100% constant torque at all times.
The performance of the Model X 100D is amazing, and the ride is excellent, but it needs to be remembered that in terms of handling, this is a large 2.5 tonne SUV, so although the suspension keeps the body impressively in check for the weight of the car, the Model X cant really be described as agile.
How I’d Spec Mine
The Model X in its most basic trim, the 75D, starts at $79,500. For that you get a significant 237 miles of range and a zero-to-60 time under five seconds. That’s nothing to scoff at, but while I’m typically a practical, frugal shopper, I say that if you’re going to go big, you should go big.
I’d at least go for the 100D model, which starts at $99,500, though I’m not sure I could quite stomach the bump up to $145,000 for the P100D. Despite its foibles, I’d go for $5,000 Enhanced Autopilot package, but would skip the extra $3,000 for theoretical future self-driving. And, I’d probably bite the bullet for the $6,000 premium package, which is required to get those heated seats.

Issues With Production Units
The Tesla Model X faced criticism in 2016 for issues with the falcon-wing doors, which sometimes did not open or latch properly in some early production units, and the windows, which sometimes did not open or close all the way. Tesla addressed these issues with several software updates, and no known issues remained after the 8.0 firmware was released. On June 27, 2016, Tesla settled on a lawsuit over usability concerns, accepting that the Model X was rushed to production before it was ready, and by October 2016, Tesla claimed the problems had been reduced by 92%.
In 2017 Chinese newspaper Xinhua reported that security researchers from Keen Security Lab at Tencent were able to remotely gain control of the Tesla Model X, allowing them to remotely open the car’s doors, blink the lights and control their brakes. They found zero day vulnerabilities that allowed them to install new firmware. The lead researcher for the team said they informed Tesla of the findings and most of the cars were patched by an update one month after Tesla was made aware of issues.
Tesla Model S 100d Is The Longest
With its huge 100.0-kWh battery pack, the Tesla Model S 100D provides greater range than any other EV on the market.
Although Tesla is viewed as a disruptive force in the auto industry, it made a splash using a tried-and-true method for success: speed. From the beginning, Teslas have impressed with smooth, silent, and swift accelerationand when Elon Musk added the Ludicrous acceleration mode to the Model S, the electric luxury four-door went viral thanks to countless YouTube videos showing wide-eyed drivers and passengers shoved back into their seats by the shockingly instant torque delivery of the Tesla’s electric motors.
Model S Tested and Compared, and Best EVs!
This is a sure strategy for building hype, but it’s not the only way to convince the world of your car company’s legitimacy. There are other considerations for building a competitive electric car, and driving range is chief among them. So in addition to its speed-focused, top-of-the-line version of the Model S called the P100D, Tesla also offers a less extreme 100D model that’s not quite so, ahem, ludicrous in its purview.
