Are There Any Extra Or Hidden Costs When Buying A Tesla

NEW 2021 Tesla Model S – First Impressions

Yes, as with the purchase of any new vehicle, there are several additional expenses you should account for when purchasing a Tesla.

  • Order fee: A $250 non-refundable order fee is charged at the time of the order.
  • Destination and documentation fee: Youll have to pay a $1,200 destination and documentation fee for the delivery of your vehicle. Most car makers charge about this much.
  • Taxes and fees: Model 3 buyers report paying between $4,500 and $5,000 in taxes and fees. You should expect to pay more if you buy one of the pricer cars, i.e. a Model X or Model S.
  • Charging equipment: Tesla no longer provides a charger with their cars, so make sure to get one. There are two options: the $200 Mobile Connector, or the $400 Wall Connector. The Mobile Connector is slower, but can also fit into regular outlets. The Wall Connector Teslas recommended option is faster but requires a professional electrical installation which could cost you $200-300.

The good news is that Tesla has stopped charging two large fees: the refundable $1,000 reservation fee and the $2,500 order deposit both were dropped in 2019.

Tesla Model S Pricing

Tesla doesnt haggle, prices are set. The Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price for the 2021 Model S Long Range is $79,990. A $1,200 destination charge makes that $81,190. The Tesla Model S Plaid version is $129,990.

For some context, the Porsche Taycan starts at $105k. The Lucid Air is expected to begin at around $78k, and the Mercedes-Benz EQC crossover is in the $69k region.

Bear in mind that Tesla has stopped offering free and unlimited access to its Supercharger network. It now costs 28 cents per kWh.

Although the federal tax credit no longer applies to Tesla vehicles, some states may offer incentives. If a Model S is still too pricey, but the desire for a great all-electric car remains, check out the smaller but not much slower Model 3, starting at approximately $39k.

In the 2020 Kelley Blue Book Resale Value Awards, the Model S was ranked third among electric vehicles, behind the Tesla Model X SUV and Model 3. We noted, however, that the desirability of all Tesla vehicles shows no sign of waning, and the Model S does a great job of retaining its value.

X Tesla Roadster: Pricing Removed

Talks of an updated Roadster began circulating as early as 2011. With more delays than a budget airline flight, the refreshed Tesla Roadster should surely come out soon. Well, its actually unlikely to come out soon because the Cybertruck, which has been delayed, is prioritized for production. However, the Roadster should be worth the wait because it will provide disturbingly quick performance numbers: 620 miles of range and a 1.9 second 0-60 run in the base model. A more powerful SpaceX Edition is also underway, and since its equipped with cold air thrusters, expect a zero to sixty time of around 1.1 seconds.

  • Range: 620 miles
  • Acceleration: 0-60 in < 1.9 seconds

Driving The 2022 Tesla Model S

No matter how you configure your Tesla Model S, its going to be an absolute thrill to drive. The base Long Range dual-motor model achieves a quick 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds, and its top speed is 155 mph. Plentiful electric torque is delivered to all four wheels via all-wheel drive.

That performance is mated nicely to a well-tuned chassis. The standard air suspension system adjusts hundreds of times per second to give you the perfect ride. That means its smooth and comfy on the highway but nimble and responsive in more spirited driving.

The Tesla Model S Plaid is one of the quickest accelerating and fastest production cars in the world. Tesla claims a 0-60 mph time of 1.99 seconds with rollout subtracted. That means you start the stopwatch after the first 12 inches of movement.

Even with that caveat, thats an astounding 0-60 time. For reference, that makes it quicker than the Porsche 911 Turbo S, Bugatti Chiron, and Lamborghini Huracan. Its rated at a top speed of 200 mph. To manage 1,020 horsepower, the Plaid model has torque vectoring all-wheel drive.

The standard Autopilot semi-autonomous driving system makes driving the Model S on the highway nearly effortless. It combines safety tech features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist, so the car practically drives itself on the highway. However, you still need to stay alert with your eyes on the road and your hands on the yoke steering wheel.

Passenger And Cargo Capacity

On the topic of pricing, expect an increase due to a mixture of high demand and other Tesla price expansions.

How Much Does A Model S Weigh

This is a common question for prospective Tesla owners, especially those looking to maximize speed or practice deadlifting their EV for workouts.

The current Long Range version of the Tesla Model S weighs 4,561 lbs., while the Plaid and its additional motor weigh in at 4,766.

The Model S remains the second heaviest Tesla behind the Model X at least until the Cybertruck begins deliveries.

Do Tesla Gas Savings Reduce The Cost Of Owning A Tesla

Yes, you will almost certainly save on fuel costs by switching from a gasoline-powered car to a Tesla , especially when gas prices are high.

Tesla provides gas savings estimates for each model on its website. For the Model 3, we were shown an estimated gas savings of $6,600 over six years, or $1,100 annually. For Teslas larger SUV, the Model X, the gas savings were even higher: $8,400 over six years.

Teslas estimates are based on assumptions about your electricity costs and annual driving distance, so they may not be very accurate for you. You can see a more useful figure by adjusting these inputs on Tesla’s estimator. To do this, simply click on the Customize button on Teslas order pages. When we adjusted the estimators electricity price input – from 14 cents per kilowatt-hour to 23 cents per kWh – we saw the six-year gas savings on a Model 3 fall from $6,600 to just $4,800.

But, Tesla’s estimator doesnt allow you to account for factors like your driving style and preferred charging method. To adjust for a greater number of variables and see a more accurate savings estimate check out the calculators offered by Teslanomics.

Tesla Opening New Manufacturing Facility In Markham Ontario

Mayor Frank Scarpitti has announced that Tesla is expanding their presence in Canada and will be opening a manufacturing facility in Markham, Ontario.

The announcement was first made in a July 2021 edition of the Mayors Review posted to the citys website. In it, Mayor Scarpitti says the new facility will be the first Tesla branded manufacturing facility in the country.

According to the mayor, who reposted the announcement to his Twitter and Instragram accounts today, the new facility will produce state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment that will be used to produce batteries at the companys Gigafactories.

Details are scarce about the new facility, but on Twitter the mayor said it will be located in an industrial area South of Hwy 7 and west of Warden.

Story continues below

Tesla already has a facility in this area at 95 Clegg Rd, which has office space and a large warehouse area at the rear of the building.

The new facility is likely related to Teslas 2019 acquisition of Hibar. The company is based in nearby Richmond Hill, and builds equipment used in battery manufacturing.

UPDATE November 5, 4:55pm PST: Mayor Scarpitti has now confirmed Teslas new facility is already up and running.

The mayors announcement comes just a few days after Tesla published a new video on LinkedIn, highlighting their R& D, Charging, and Manufacturing teams.

Don’t Miss: Will Toyota Make An Electric Car

Is The Tesla Model S A Good Car

The Tesla Model S is an all-electric executive saloon that combines amazing performance with zero tailpipe emissions, a luxurious, high-tech cabin and tremendous refinement.

Compared with the likes of the petrol- and diesel-powered Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series and Audi A6, the futuristic Tesla Model S is like a Fender Stratocaster with a massive amplifier in the company of acoustic guitars. Sure the electric Model S might not produce any discernible engine sound, but its supercar-like performance is more like a searing rock solo than the German cars humble rhythm section.

You wouldnt guess that this Tesla electric car has the pace to put sportscars to shame just by looking at it, though. Next to the aggressive grilles you get on a BMW or Audi, the Model S front end looks a bit blank, while its subtle, slinky body is perhaps a bit forgettable.

Things take a turn for the unusual when you step inside, though. This is mostly down to the huge 17-inch touch-screen display that dominates the cabin, and controls pretty much all of the Model Ss functions. On earlier models this was mounted in portrait, but for the 2021 model , this is now landscape orientated. That odd Y-shaped steering yoke is a new addition too, though you will be able to choose a regular wheel if you want.

Theres plenty of space for you, and a few passengers, to get comfy, and the Teslas boot is large and easy to load thanks to its handy hatchback-style boot lid.

Tesla Model Y Performance: $64990

Tesla 2021 Model List: Current Lineup, Prices & Reviews

The Model Y Performance is the sportier version of the Long Range Model Y. It has a zero to sixty time of 3.5 seconds, and it can achieve 303 miles on a charge. For the price, its combination of performance and range are unparalleled in the crossover sector. However, once you tack on delivery and a different paint schematic, it’s easily a $70,000 crossover.

Purchase Process: Buying A Tesla Is Different

Tesla is unique and not just because of their branding and design. When you buy a Tesla, regardless of the model or trim level, you work directly with Tesla, not a third-party sales force as you would with traditional car brands

In fact, you can buy a Tesla remotely from the comfort of your home. Just go to their website, customize the vehicle of your choice, place your order, and wait for it to be delivered. There are no haggling, pushy salesmen, or dealership gimmicks.

While Tesla doesn’t have dealerships, they do have showrooms for those seeking an “in-store” experience. There, you can go for a test drive, speak with a specialist, or customize your car. But even at the showroom, you still place the order using the official Tesla website.

The website will show you two different prices listed for each car:

  • Potential savings

The purchase price is the real sticker price of the car. It’s also the price that we’ve used when discussing Tesla prices throughout this blog.

The potential savings price, which is shown to website users by default, is your estimated cost of ownership after EV incentives and potential gas savings. We’re not fans of prices being presented this way as it doesn’t reflect the amount you will actually have to pay to buy the car. Plus, incentive eligibility and gas savings can vary significantly from person to person.

In The Past Decade Tesla Has Become An Icon In The Automotive Industry From The 3 To The X Each Excels In Its Own Domain

Just thirteen years after the first Roadster deliveries, Tesla has become perhaps the most salient U.S. automaker. Whether its the compact sedan or crossover segment, its more than apparent that Tesla is the most popular electric car brand.

Instead of simply building electric cars, Tesla built an icon based upon an ecosystem and a lifestyle. In 2022, its ecosystem is stronger than ever, but its prices have slowly moved more and more upstream. Here are Tesla’s entries for the 2022 model year.

Two Awd Options: Long Range Dual Motor Or Plaid Tri

Tesla offers two all-wheel-drive powertrain options for the 2021 Model S: Long Range and Plaid. The Long Range comes with dual motors to deliver 670 hp, while the tri-motor Plaid with torque vectoring does 1,020 hp. Here’s part of what makes the Plaid’s powertrain so special: carbon-wrapped motors. Tesla CEO Elon Musk detailed the benefits of going this route over metal, tweeting that it creates a stronger electromagnetic field.

There’s several benefits to Tesla’s independent front and rear motors setup, including better acceleration, improved traction, and fewer visits for repairs and maintenance.

Cost To Charge At Home

To begin, weve calculated that the 100 kWh battery pack on the Model S will cost approximately $16.47 to charge at home on a Level 1 or Level 2 AC charger from 0-100%.

Since the charger must convert AC power into DC for the Tesla, weve also accounted for an 85% charging efficiency in that price. For more information on how to determine these prices and what the heck charging efficiency is, check out our Tesla charging guide.

Its also important to note that while these prices are the cost to charge your Tesla battery from 0-100%, you should never let your battery get down to 0%. Furthermore, you should rarely charge your EV all the way to 100% unless you need maximum range for a long trip.

Speaking in terms of mileage, the Model S Long Range has an EPA estimated range of 405 miles, which means youd pay about $0.041 per mile or $4.07 for 100 miles of range.

The Model S Plaid has an estimated range of 390 miles, coming out to $0.042 per mile or $4.22 per 100 miles.

How Much Does Each Tesla Model Cost

A Tesla can cost as little as $46,990 or as much as $160,990, it all depends on which Tesla model you choose, and what features you want to add to the vehicle.

We’ve created a handy table to show you the price range for every Tesla model and version. Prices for Teslas are the same across the country, so the price of a Model 3 in New York will be the same as one in Beverly Hills. But remember the final price will depend on how you customize your ride.

2021 Tesla Model S Matte Black Engine, Manual Transmission, Electric ...

1,020 horsepower, zero to sixty in 1.99 seconds , and 396 miles of range, the Model S Plaid is one of the most exciting EVs to release this year.
