Tesla Model 3 Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Is there a scratching sound on your Tesla when the wiper blades are switched on, and the wiper blades cant clean the wiper as they should? Learn how to fix the problem by replacing the windshield wiper blades of your Tesla. This guide will show step-by-step procedures to replace the windshield wiper blades of your Tesla Model 3.
Top Pick: Bosch Icon Wiper Blades
Honestly, it doesnt really matter which vehicle you own. The Bosch ICON wiper blades have been my best overall windshield wipers for years now, and they were the ones I chose when I had to replace my Model 3 factory blades. Designed to last up to 40% longer than other premium blades, the Bosch ICON has a beam design and uses exclusive rubber technology from Bosch. A weather-shield, double locking connector makes it easy to install these replacement wiper blades, while the asymmetrical flexible spoiler is designed to distribute uniform downforce on the blade so it holds firmly to your windshield with each swipe.
This is a fantastic all-weather blade and while it is more expensive than other options on the market, its well worth the price. If you dont want to take my word for it, youll find plenty of Tesla owners over at Tesla Motors Club with the same recommendation.

Owning a Tesla, or any BEV for that matter, has its perks when it comes to general maintenance of the vehicle. Youre no longer worried about oil changes or spark plugs, but instead, you typically only need to keep tabs on your windshield wipers, wiper fluid, brakes, and tires. Its pretty obvious when three of those four items need replacing or refilling, but your windshield wipers are often forgotten about unless you often deal with rain. For many car owners, they wont realize they need replacement windshield wipers until theyre caught in a sudden downpour and their wiper blades arent performing well.
If youve recently turned on your Teslas windshield wipers and found that theyre squeaking with every swipe or leaving behind a thin layer of rain or debris thats obstructing your view, its time for replacement wiper blades. Even if you dont plan on using them, give them a test and see how they function, especially if its been over six months since youve replaced them. Its never a bad idea to see how well your wipers are performing every time you wash your car, this way you know if you need replacements before youre caught in a rainstorm.

Wipers
To perform a single wipe with the windshield wipers, press and immediately release the button on the end of the turn signal stalk. To adjust the continuous wiper settings, touch the windshield wiper icon located in the Cards area on the touchscreen. The wiper card displays the current state of the wipers.
NOTE: When you operate the wipers, the headlights automatically turn on .
CAUTION: To avoid damaging the hood, ensure that the hood is fully closed before activating the windshield wipers.
Below the wipers icon you can adjust the speed of the wipers. 1: Intermittent, slow 4: Continuous, fast AUTO: Model 3 detects whether or not it is raining. When wipers are set to AUTO and liquid is detected on the windshield, Model 3 determines the optimal frequency at which they should wipe. If Model 3 does not detect liquid on the windshield, the wipers do not wipe.
NOTE: The AUTO setting is currently in BETA. If uncertain about using AUTO while in the BETA phase, Tesla recommends setting the wiper speed to one of the first four positions, as necessary.
NOTE: If the AUTO setting is selected but becomes unavailable, the wipers change to the manual setting that is closest to the latest determined AUTO wiping frequency. If the latest wiping frequency cannot be determined, the wipers turn off.
CAUTION: Ensure the wipers are off before washing Model 3 to avoid the risk of damaging the wipers.

Adjusting The Actual Wipers
As mentioned previously, it is also possible to get Tesla to adjust the blades. We’d only suggest going this route if the car is new or the wipers are particularly bad and it may be a sign of a warranty issue. Tesla may otherwise want to charge you for a slight adjustment when the car is otherwise within the ‘tolerance’. Tesla will adjust the angle of the wiper arm against the windscreen using a specialist tool. In essence, Tesla adjust/twist the wiper arm mount effectively aligning it better to the screen, and we strongly advise owners NOT to trying to do this themselves.
The second adjustment is the length of the sweep. If the wiper arm is removed when say a new windscreen is fitted, it is possible that it is replaced on the wrong notch of the motor spindle. This results in the sweep either extending past the end of the windscreen on to the A-pillar or more typically a short sweep where it doesn’t wipe far enough. There is a specialist tool to remove the wiper arm without damaging it and as a result we’d suggest taking it back to have it refitted. It’s literally a 2-minute job with the right equipment. Weve tried to remove the wiper arm ourselves before, and there is a real risk of damaging the windscreen without the right tool.

Tesla Windscreen Wipers Replacement
The windscreen wipers on all Teslas but especially the Model S and Model X, are known for not performing brilliantly. They can often judder and flex leave streaks across the windscreen. It appears as if the blades themselves are too flimsy, but the problem is slightly more complex as it can include the wiper blade alignment being slightly out. Even if the alignment is corrected, it rarely lasts because either the alignment drifts or because the weather , speed you are driving at etc can all change the behaviour of the wipers and the flexibility. We’ve some suggestions on how to improve their performance.
Before we get to those, there is a secondary issue with the auto wipe function. When Tesla switched to their own autopilot hardware, they decided to drop the industry standard sensor and decided to rely on the cameras. 5 years later and it’s still not working well in all conditions. Heavy rain is usually fine, but light rain, mist or mizzle, splashes of water etc, all result in variable performance, as does driving in the dark. There is little you can do to help with this problem other than set the wiper speed manually, although even this has become limited lately with Auto wipers being enabled automatically when Tesla Vision autopilot is engaged.
