Interior Comfort And Cargo

Here’s What a Tesla Model 3 Is Actually Like After 100,000 Miles

For now, the Roadster is merely a concept, and in general, concepts change drastically during their development into production models. As shown, the Roadster concept features a removable glass-panel roof, which you can stow in the trunk. It has four seats, but the rear ones look as though they may not fit adults, given the Roadster’s dramatically angled roofline. Other than that, we expect to see Tesla’s signature minimalist interior design repeated here.

Warranty And Maintenance Coverage

We anticipate the Roadster will offer the same standard warranty package as the rest of Tesla’s lineup, which includes an eight-year warranty on the car’s electric motors and battery pack. Unlike rivals such as the Audi R8 or the Jaguar F-type, the Tesla is not likely to come with a complimentary scheduled maintenance plan.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers eight years, regardless of miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

Spacex Put A Car In Space Why Cant Tesla Put A Model 3 In Your Driveway

Is Tesla testing the patience of its nearly half-million Model 3 reservation holders? In the wake of a mostly good-news quarterly earnings analyst call Wednesday, word seeped out that Tesla appears to be prioritizing Model 3 deliveries toward the higher-end versions with longer ranger and more options. It means more people waiting in line to buy a Model 3 may not collect on the $7,500 federal tax credit.

Standard Model 3 deliveries are being pushed back to late 2018, early 2019 reports Inside EVs. With Tesla at an estimated 140,000 EVs delivered to date, that leaves only 60,000 more Tesla buyers who can collect on the full $7,500 federal tax credit available to the first 200,000 buyers of EVs per auto manufacturer. If the Model 3 is seriously delayed, those slots will fall to Model S and Model X buyers.

In this 2017 Tesla chart, the company said it would build 5,000 Model 3s a week by the end of 2017. Now, theyre saying March 2018.

Are There Any Extra Or Hidden Costs When Buying A Tesla

Yes, as with the purchase of any new vehicle, there are several additional expenses you should account for when purchasing a Tesla.

  • Order fee: A $250 non-refundable order fee is charged at the time of the order.
  • Destination and documentation fee: Youll have to pay a $1,200 destination and documentation fee for the delivery of your vehicle. Most car makers charge about this much.
  • Taxes and fees: Model 3 buyers report paying between $4,500 and $5,000 in taxes and fees. You should expect to pay more if you buy one of the pricer cars, i.e. a Model X or Model S.
  • Charging equipment: Tesla no longer provides a charger with their cars, so make sure to get one. There are two options: the $200 Mobile Connector, or the $400 Wall Connector. The Mobile Connector is slower, but can also fit into regular outlets. The Wall Connector Teslas recommended option is faster but requires a professional electrical installation which could cost you $200-300.

The good news is that Tesla has stopped charging two large fees: the refundable $1,000 reservation fee and the $2,500 order deposit both were dropped in 2019.

In 2018, Elon Musk‘s original Tesla Roadster served as payload during the landmark SpaceX Falcon Heavy test flight. Musk even promised a special SpaceX option package for the next-gen Roadster. But what about Tesla’s flagship seller, the Model 3 is there any cool SpaceX collab in the works?

Well… it turns out that a mysterious white Tesla Model 3 is performing services as an Emergency Operations vehicle for SpaceX. The Model 3 has been spotted on several occasions and at a number of different SpaceX events.

There are many hidden synergies between SpaceX and Tesla. You probably saw SpaceX video footage of NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley getting out of a Tesla Model X before their recent mission to the International Space Station. Tesla’s Elon Musk has even been credited with helping to make NASA cool again.

Ev Motor Power And Performance

When the new Tesla Roadster was unveiled as a concept in November 2017, Musk touted some pie-in-the-sky performance numbers for this car, including a 60-mph time of 1.9 seconds, a top speed of more than 250 mph, and a quarter-mile time of just 8.8 seconds. That’s outrageous. For reference, if that 60-mph time holds up, it will mean the Roadster is a full second quicker than its key rival, the gasoline-powered McLaren 570S. Also during this conference, Musk noted that the Roadster will come with standard all-wheel drive. This is less surprising. Tesla’s mainstream EV models utilize two electric motorsone at the front and one at the rearto drive all four wheels, so it makes sense we’d see the same setup for the Roadster.

How This Compares To The Regular Roadster

2020 SpaceX Tesla Roadster 0-60 in 1.1s!

The regular second-gen Roadster has an advertised 0-60 speed of 1.9-seconds, which Tesla claims on its website is “the quickest car in the world, with record-setting acceleration.” The fact that the SpaceX Roadster stands to be even faster is hard to fathom, especially considering that the average 0-60 speed for ‘regular’ cars is anywhere between 8 and 6 seconds. In a tweet from Elon Musk, he says, “it will be safe, but very intense. Probably not wise for those with a medical condition same as a hardcore roller coaster.”

Outside of the increase in acceleration, the rest of the SpaceX Roadster specs will remain the same. The regular model will deliver a top speed of over 250mph, a 620-mile range, and still manage to seat four people. The cold air rocket thrusters could impact total speed or range, but there’s nothing to indicate that will be the case.

Something else that remains unknown is the price. The baseline Roadster is available for a hefty $200,000, and the Founder Series goes for $250,000. It’s safe to assume the SpaceX Roadster will cost even more, though exactly how much more is a mystery. A price tag of at least $300,000 seems fair, though there’s a good chance it’ll cost substantially more. Just like the speed won’t be for the faint of heart, don’t expect the price tag to be, either.

How Much Do Tesla Customizations And Add

The customization options for Teslas are quite limited. On the positive side, thats fewer decisions for you to make when ordering your car. On the negative, it means less freedom to personalize your vehicle when compared to, say, the Porsche Taycan.

The table below shows you all Tesla add-on options and how much they cost.

The cost of Tesla customizations by model

Feature
$2,500 $2,500

*Included for both Model Y variants as well as the Model X . Not available in the Model X Plaid.

**Included Model X Plaid, but $6,500 extra in the Model X .

***Only available for the Model Y Long Range and Model X .

The color customizations are also the same across all Tesla vehicles, although costs can vary across models. The availability of other customizations is more limited Carbon Fiber Decor interior styling, for instance, is only available for the Plaid versions of the Model X and Model S.

Full Self-Driving Capability is the crown jewel of Teslas additional options and much more powerful than the Basic Autopilot function that comes standard. FSD allows Autopilot navigation, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, and the parking lot Summon feature. Buying FSD with your vehicle now costs $12,000 , and ensures that youll receive all future updates to FSD features at no additional cost.

What Does It Cost To Service And Maintain A Tesla

Tesla vehicles have lower maintenance costs than conventional gas-powered cars. The reason for this is simple: EVs have fewer moving parts than gas engines, so there is less need for service and repairs.

In fact, Tesla updated its guidance a couple of years ago to let drivers know that annual servicing isnt necessary. The company now recommends service only when a part is scheduled for checking or replacement.

Many Tesla owners say their only out-of-pocket maintenance costs within the first two years of ownership were related to their tires. This is mostly just periodic tire rotation, but some drivers said they needed to replace their tires early due to excessive wear and tear brought on by aggressive driving.

Projected five-year maintenance costs for a Model 3 come to about $980 total, assuming you change the parts yourself using Teslas DIY guides.

Are Tesla Cars Worth The Price

While Teslas arent the cheapest cars around, they offer plenty of bang for your buck.

They are emissions-free, boast excellent safety ratings, offer fantastic driving performance, and have long driving ranges. They also come with low running costs, especially when compared to conventional gas-powered vehicles.

Furthermore, owning Tesla allows you to use a home solar panel system as a fuel source. Solar panels generate power that is both clean and cheap, so using them to charge your vehicle will amplify the already great environmental and cost benefits of Tesla ownership.

If youre thinking of buying a Tesla, definitely consider pairing it with a home solar panel installation.

How The Tax Credit Works

Tesla Model 3 Prototype Caught in the Wild Near SpaceX HQ

Every automaker gets a tax credit that has a 200,000-vehicle cap, as its described. Its actually more because of a phase-down. Heres how it works:

  • First, the automaker sells 200,000 EVs. No automaker has hit 200,000 yet. Tesla is believed to be at about 140,000. At 200,000 sold, a bell goes off, of sorts, and a countdown timer time, not units comes into play.
  • Every car sold in the we-hit-200,000 EVs quarter still gets the full credit. Every car sold in the quarter after that gets the full credit as well.
  • For the next six months, every EV sold by that automaker gets half credit. In the six months after that, its one-quarter credit. Then its gone.

So Teslas goal once it gets close to the 200,000 mark is to have its factories running flat out, at the capacity theyve been talking about, not the capacities theyre struggled through with the Model 3. Were Tesla to hit unit 200,000 on July 1, 2018 , and were it producing the 20,000 Model 3s it claims it can each month, as well as 10,000 Model S and Model X EVs a month, it would build 90,000 extra cars that get the credit in Q3, and another 90,000 that get the full credit in Q4, meaning Tesla would have 380,000 cars getting the full credit. Plus another 180,000 cars getting half or quarter credit. Notice there are a lot of ifs in this.

Check back to see how those 455,000 customers in line actually fare.

It’s Time To Get Interactive With Some Helpful And Compelling Visualizations

The upcoming Tesla Model S Plaid stands to be the quickest car ever produced, at least until the next-gen Tesla Roadster comes to market. However, there are some upcoming rivals from Lucid and Rimac. Let’s see how quick the Roadster is compared to the fastest cars on the planet.

Just how quick is zero to 60 mph in just 1.1 seconds? It’s certainly something you’ll have to experience to comprehend, but this interactive tool compares it to the world’s quickest cars. For a quick look at the top competitors, check out the chart below, provided by vanarama:

While the next-gen Roadster won’t come cheap, it will be much less expensive than all of the world’s fastest supercars. The regular Tesla Roadster is aiming to hit 60 mph in 1.9 seconds, which is already ridiculous enough. As Tesla CEO Elon Musk said about the upcoming Model S Plaid, it’s “just so good,” and that’s at 1.99 seconds, at least as far as we know at the time of writing. Perhaps we’ll learn more at the delivery event on June 10.

Opt for the SpaceX Edition Roadster and Tesla says the car will rocket to 60 mph in just 1.1 seconds. Looking at that chart above, 1.9 seconds is already the leader by a significant margin, as far as racing times are concerned. If Tesla can pull off 1.1 seconds, it will undercut the next quickest car by a full second to 60 mph.

Purchase Process: Buying A Tesla Is Different

COMPLETE Tesla Guide for Model 3/Y

Tesla is unique and not just because of their branding and design. When you buy a Tesla, regardless of the model or trim level, you work directly with Tesla, not a third-party sales force as you would with traditional car brands

In fact, you can buy a Tesla remotely from the comfort of your home. Just go to their website, customize the vehicle of your choice, place your order, and wait for it to be delivered. There are no haggling, pushy salesmen, or dealership gimmicks.

While Tesla doesn’t have dealerships, they do have showrooms for those seeking an “in-store” experience. There, you can go for a test drive, speak with a specialist, or customize your car. But even at the showroom, you still place the order using the official Tesla website.

The website will show you two different prices listed for each car:

  • Purchase price
  • Potential savings

The purchase price is the real sticker price of the car. It’s also the price that we’ve used when discussing Tesla prices throughout this blog.

The potential savings price, which is shown to website users by default, is your estimated cost of ownership after EV incentives and potential gas savings. We’re not fans of prices being presented this way as it doesn’t reflect the amount you will actually have to pay to buy the car. Plus, incentive eligibility and gas savings can vary significantly from person to person.

Obviously This Is Just A Joke Or Is It You Never Know With Elon Musk

It seems a recent SpaceX update for the Tesla Model 3 has made the car able to fly, but parking it in a garage is a bit of a hassle now. That’s just a small inconvenience for being in the early access group.

Not every update works out quite as planned and this is one of them where the end result wasn’t all that well thought out.

Mixed Reaction From Media Analysts Buyers

Reaction has been swift, and not altogether positive, from sites and analysts who track Tesla. Inside EVs was first to break the story. It said Wednesday:

What was once promised to arrive in early 2018 is now expected by late 2018 or even as far off as early 2019 for reservation holders. It appears as though Day 1 reservation holders are seeing the late 2018 timeline for the standard Model 3, whereas those who reserved on Day 2 are receiving the early 2019 notice. It seems Tesla is prioritizing the pricier version and delaying whats likely to be the money-losing standard Model 3, but thats what some of us expected to happen all along.

Anton Wahlman, one of the savviest and most articulate analysts covering Tesla , said Wednesday was the most surreal afternoon in Tesla history. Anton wrote on the Seeking Alpha site:

The main surprise during the 4Q 2017 financial results conference call wasnt even that the head of sales , Jon McNeill, left the company. what happened wasnt even covered on the conference call at all. Instead, most of us found out an hour after Teslas financial results call from InsideEVs: The $36,000 version of the Tesla Model 3 has been delayed by what seems like nine months, according to the source. And you know what they say when Tesla says theres a nine-month delay? Think 18 months.
