Here’s What a Tesla Model 3 Is Actually Like After 100,000 Miles

As with most EVs, the Model 3 gains speed smoothly and almost silently, with the electric motor providing strong power from a stop. And it’s fastextremely so in some trims. The rear-wheel-drive Long Range model we tested sprinted from zero to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. The Model 3 Performance rockets to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds0.5-second faster than our long-term Model 3 Long Range. Like all Teslas, the Model 3 carries its battery under the floor, resulting in a low center of gravity. This helps it change direction crisply and feel planted and stable in corners. The steering is accurate and well weighted, with three different settings that adjust the level of steering effort. The ride is firm without being harsh without the noise of a gas-powered engine, however, you do hear plenty of noise inside the cabin as the tires thwack and thrum over pavement imperfections.

Are Tesla Model 3 Expensive To Maintain

Compared to a car that uses an Internal Combustion Engine , the Model 3 costs significantly less to maintain.

Its drive units dont produce a lot of heat so they dont need complicated cooling systems to keep them running.

It also doesnt have a ton of mechanical parts, plastic and rubber that simply degrade over time.

You also wont have to deal with periodic oil changes or even transmission issues because it doesnt use a traditional transmission that has lots of gears and requires fluids to keep them all lubricated.

The 2-year/25,000-mile service recommended by Tesla should cost you less than $500 for a brake service and changing out cabin filters, as well as other general maintenance items.

Tesla Model 3 Long Range

The Model 3 Long Range has 358 miles of range on a fully charged battery pack, but its battery and charging system arent as efficient as the Standard Range model. While it shares the same 126 MPGe highway as the Standard Range model, the reduced efficiency drops its other EPA ratings to 134 MPGe city and 131 MPGe combined.

Despite not being quite as efficient as the Standard Range model, the Tesla Model 3Long Range model costs the same $500 per year to charge.

On top of its longer range, the Model 3 Long Range AWD comes standard with the automakers dual-motorall-wheel-drive system. These two electric motors not only help in slippery conditions, they also drop this electric vehicles 0-to-60 time to just 4.2 seconds. This version of the Model 3 also has a slightly higher top speed of 145 mph.

Model 3 Long Range pros:

  • 358 miles of all-electric range
  • 4.2-second 0-to-60 time

Model 3 Long Range cons:

  • Costs $6,000 more than the Standard Range model

Range is one thing since every EV can have more range if they had a bigger battery, but efficiency is another. InsideEVs said that in terms of efficiency, the Model 3 is 25 percent more efficient with its energy than the Chevy Bolt and the Nissan LEAF are.

Other sites have done similar comparisons in the past, and generally speaking, its the same story. For example, carwow compared multiple EVs against each other in real-world driving tests, and the Model 3 came out on top with a 270-mile range. However, while carwow didnt test the Bolt, it did test the LEAF, and the LEAF only managed to get 200 miles on a single charge.

That said, while the LEAF had less real-world range than the Model 3 did, carwow also found that the LEAFs real-world range was closer to its estimated range than the Model 3s is.

We Beat Our 2019 Model 3 Range Test Done On The Same Course By 20 Miles

It was the 2021 Tesla Model 3’s turn for the InsideEVs 70-mph highway range test this week and as expected, we now have a new highway range king. The long-range, dual-motor Model 3 managed to go 305 miles at 70 miles per hour before the state of charge reached 0, and we continued on to drive another 5 miles before arriving at the Supercharger station where we started.

310 miles is the farthest we’ve been able to drive any of the vehicles we’ve tested in the InsideEVs 70-mph range tests, beating out the RWD Porsche Taycan that Kyle Conner was able to drive 293 miles on his highway test. That should change once we get a refreshed Model S to test out and then perhaps again when we get our hands on a Lucid Air.

It’s interesting to note that we continue to see the trend of Tesla vehicles not being able to reach their highway EPA range rating when we do these 70-mph tests, while EVs from most other brands usually do. In this case, the highway EPA range rating is 333.8 miles , and we fell short of that by a considerable margin.

The 2021 Model 3 we tested is only 5 months old and has about 6,000 miles on it, so the battery likely has a higher percentage of its original capacity available than the 2019 Model 3 did when we tested it. At the end of the drive, the trip gauge showed that we used 73 kWh, compared to the 68 kWh used when we tested the 2019 Model 3.

Where This Vehicle Ranks

The base rear-wheel drive model is a good value, but its 272 miles of estimated driving range may not be enough to eliminate range-anxiety for some drivers. We’d recommend the Long Range model that offers an estimated 358 miles of driving per charge. All Model 3s come standard with heated front seats, navigation, and Tesla’s Autopilot semi-autonomous driving system.

Which Tesla Model 3 Range Is Best For You

Determining the best Tesla Model 3 option for you can be tricky because of the range vs. efficiency debate. The Long Range model is technically less efficient than the Standard Range model, but the Long Range model offers added convenience with more miles between charges.

With 272 miles of range on the Standard Range model, the average commuter, who drives about 32 miles per day, five days a week, will suck up 160 miles of that range just driving to work and back. This leaves 112 miles of driving range for various odds and ends throughout the week, such as dance recitals, baseball games, grocery trips, and other errands, without having to charge.

Thats just 22.4 spare miles per day without the weekend, and 16 miles per day with the weekends. For most drivers, this means youll have to charge your Model 3 at least once and maybe twice a week to ensure you have enough juice to get where you need to go.

With the Long Range versions extra 86 miles of range, you now have 246 leftover miles after the average American commute. This gives you an extra 49.2 miles per day when youre just counting weekdays and 35.1 miles per day when counting the weekends. Unless youre planning a road trip out of town for the weekend, youll likely have plenty of charge to last through Sunday.

Tesla Boosts Long Range Model 3 Rwd To 325 Miles Per Charge

Together with the release of the $35k Model 3 Standard Range and Standard Range Plus variant, Tesla has also improved the range of the Long Range version of the electric car.

Tesla revealed that the Long Range Model 3 with rear-wheel drive, priced at $43,000 before incentives, will now have a range of 325 miles per charge, a nearly 5% improvement over the vehicles previous range of 310-mile range. This range boost brings it in line with the Long Range Tesla Model S , which is capable of traveling 335 miles per single charge.

In a blog post announcing the upgrade, Tesla revealed that the 335-mile range upgrade will be rolled out through a number of over-the-air firmware upgrades for both new and existing Model 3 owners. As such, owners who purchased a Long Range RWD should see their vehicles receive an extra 5% of range.

This will likely be a notable perk for the Model 3s first adopters, as the Long Range RWD was the only variant available for the vehicle during the initial months of the electric cars production.

Due to the upcoming software updates, Tesla points out that the Model 3 Performance will now have a top speed of 162 mph. These firmware upgrades will also add an average of approximately 5% peak power to all Model 3 vehicles, including the Mid Range RWD variant introduced last October.

Elon Musk notes that Tesla was able to accomplish the Model 3 Performances top speed increase by raising the limit on the electric sedans motors.

Battery Of An Electric Car

Tesla Model 3

Often modern electric cars, such as the Tesla Model 3 are equipped with batteries that give about 250 miles of mileage. The first models came with a battery with a useful capacity of 50 kWh, and today you can already find cars with a capacity of more than 100 kWh. Engineers continue to improve the battery, improving its parameters.

The number of miles traveled increases by about 1.8 times if you drive at a low speed. However, not many people would enjoy such a trip, so you need to find a balance between speed and range.

Very low or high ambient temperatures reduce the range by a factor of 1.5 to 3, which should be considered on long journeys.

Tesla’s Model : At Least 215 Miles Per Charge 0

Elon Musk’s 10-year master plan came to a head last night as the Tesla chief unveiled the long-awaited Model 3, the budget-minded electric sedan for the mainstream audience. It will indeed arrive at a starting price of $35,000 but for the 130,000+ people that have already pre-ordered the vehicle, the wait is far from over as the car won’t begin shipping until late next year.

Musk said the base model will accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than six seconds and will have a minimum range of 215 miles on a single charge. It’ll be fully compatible with Tesla’s global Supercharger recharging network.

Speaking of, Tesla plans to have 7,200 Superchargers in commission by the time the Model 3 arrives which is roughly double the number in the wild today.

The base Model 3 will be of the rear-wheel drive variety although there will be an option for dual-motor, all-wheel drive. What’s more, all models will include Tesla’s Autopilot features as a standard option.

As for styling, the roof is constructed from a near continuous sheet of glass that’s said to give the occupants a sense of openness. Like the Model S, the Model 3 has two “trunks” which will give it the most cargo space of any vehicle in its class. The chassis, meanwhile, is constructed of a mix of steel and lightweight aluminum.

Tesla plans to add more features and upgrades before the Model 3 goes into production sometime next year.

Range Of Tesla Battery

Based on the average number of miles driven by Americans in a year, usually around 143100, Tesla car batteries are believed to last 300,000-500,000 miles or around 21-36 years. Keep in mind that the number can change depending on various factors, including the mileage range.

Tesla is rumored to be working on a battery that can travel a million miles. However, existing batteries are not yet capable of lasting a million miles, and the car may require a battery change at some point during its lifetime.

Because so few EV batteries have been replaced, a replacement battery for a Model 3 car costs $5,000 to $7,000. The costs of replacing batteries are predicted to reduce as the cost of batteries decreases. People are spending tens of thousands of dollars on a new batteries in increasing numbers. Although there is a lot of contradicting information about expenses, a Tesla battery may still be able to function after 500,000 miles albeit with a lower mileage range per charge.

Recharging electric car batteries strains the batterys life and ability to maintain a charge, especially if the battery runs out of power and is fully refilled every day. On the plus side, this is improbable unless you drive 300 miles or more every day.

You can also expect consistent performance from your battery over time.

How Do I Calculate The Charging Costs For An Electric Car

If you’re considering purchasing an electric vehicle, you’ll want to figure out how much charging will cost. There are several factors that must be taken into account, including the rate of electricity, the type of charging station, and the weather. Here are some tips to calculate the costs of charging an electric car. You can also use a calculator online to determine your costs. But be sure to consult a licensed professional if you’re unsure.

Our Tesla Model 3 Proves Evs Are Cheaper When Charged At Home

2021 Tesla Model 3: Real World Mileage Results – How Close to 353 Miles?

We have spent approximately $1200 less on fuel compared to our long-term BMW M340i.

  • Owning a Tesla Model 3 can substantially reduce fuel costs compared to a gas-powered car, but only when it’s charged at home.
  • Assuming all at-home charging, we’ve averaged 5.5 cents per mile in our Model 3 Long Range.
  • Based on the national average electricity cost and average cost of premium unleaded gas, we’ve spent roughly $1200 less powering our long-term Model 3 compared to our long-term BMW M340i test car.

UPDATE: We have received a lot of questions about our calculation that using a Supercharger can cost the equivalent of $8.76 per gallon. That number is based on the EPAs equivalency factor that an average gallon of gas contains 33.7 kWh of energy. Although the math we used to arrive at that number is correct, we understand why it could be misleading if taken out of context, so we have removed references in the title and introduction of the story to $9 a gallon. A detailed explanation can be found in the story below.

More on Our Model 3

States such as California and Massachusetts have said that they will ban the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035 in favor of electric vehicles. So, along with being more eco-friendly, these cars will be cheaper to operate, too. But first you need to spend some of those future savings by getting charging equipment installed at home.
