Polestar 2 vs Tesla Model 3: comparison review & real-world range test!

If youre in the market for a premium electric vehicle, the 2 brands you cant ignore are the all-conquering Tesla and the young Swedish upstart Polestar.

More than any other carmaker, it is Tesla thats led the way in electrification, fearlessly developing and trialling new technologies that have pushed the boundaries of battery performance, charging capabilities and even autonomous driving.

The Tesla Model 3 is officially the most popular electric car ever made, surpassing the original mass-market electric car, the Nissan Leaf, in April 2021. Surprised? Probably with good reason, because the Model 3 isnt exactly a budget runabout: its a high-tech, future-gazing saloon with a starting price north of £40,000 and, in some versions, pace more akin to a supercar than a zero-emissions runabout. And its from a relatively unknown carmaker.

Polestar is a relatively unknown carmaker too, but look at the Polestar 2 and itll probably seem vaguely familiar. Thats because Polestar is Volvos newly-created eco-conscious electric brand. The 2 is its first high-volume production model and its aimed squarely at drivers ofyouve guessed itthe Tesla Model 3. So, which is better? Lets find out

Polestar 2 Vs Tesla Model : Interior

Inside, the Polestar pulls a lot of inspiration from its parent company, boasting a clean, organized, but still very upscale cabin. It features a clutter-free dash highlighted by an 11.15-inch touchscreen infotainment system running the Android Automotive OS. So, while the Polestar 2 doesnât run Android Auto or Apple CarPlay from your phone, the OS features many of the same tech features, such as Google Maps, Google Voice, Google Assistant, and more.

As for roominess, the Polestar 2âs front seats have 1,055 mm of headroom, 1,073 mm of legroom, and 1,365 mm of shoulder room. The rear seats have 940 mm of headroom, 862 mm of legroom, and 1,355 mm of shoulder room. In addition to having limited rear seat space, the Polestar 2 also has only 404.9 litres of cargo space, despite having a hatchback-like liftback instead of a traditional trunk.

The Tesla Model 3, like the Polestar, has a clear and clutter-free setup thatâs highlighted by a massive 15-inch infotainment touchscreen. While the touchscreen is large, it lacks a familiar interface like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Also, the Model 3âs cabin takes the cleanliness too far for some buyers, as it can border on boring and featureless. However, some buyers will prefer this design.

Polestar 2 Dual Motor Vs 2021 Tesla Model 3 Long Range Awd

Let’s now take a look at the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive versions of both cars – once again, with 19″ wheels.

The battery pack sizes are now similar – Tesla might have a few kWh more battery capacity . But the range is then substantially different and Tesla Model 3 can go 334 miles . The Polestar 2 has a quarter lower range, at 249 miles .

It’s also a proof of a vast difference in efficiency of both cars that were supposed to be closer to each other.

Anyway, the Polestar 2 offers similar acceleration and its price is almost a fifth lower, which combined with the attractive design – that many customers prefer – might be an interesting option.

Warranty And Maintenance Coverage

Polestars limited warranty sticks to the industry standard, on par with that from Tesla. The company also provides competitive coverage for the 2’s electrical components. Surprisingly, Polestar doesnt offer the same three-year complimentary maintenance program as Volvo, its parent company.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Electrical components are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

Polestar 2 Vs Tesla Model 3 Performance Range & Specs

Both vehicles offer a single-motor and dual-motor variant. The Polestar 2 implements a single motor at the front wheels, while the Tesla Model 3 puts its single motor at the rear wheels. Opting for the Polestar 2 FWD, you’ll see better traction in winter weather than with a rear-wheel-drive vehicle.

Slide behind the wheel of your single motor Polestar 2, and you’ll get a 0-60 in 7.0 seconds with an EPA estimated range of 265 miles.4 Hopping into the dual-motor Polestar 2 gets you a 0-60 in 4.5 seconds with an EPA estimated range of 249 miles.4

The RWD Model 3 offers a 0-60 in 5.8 seconds and an EPA estimated range of 267 miles.4 Stepping up to the Long Range version, you’ll see a 0-60 in 4.2 seconds with an EPA estimated range of 334 miles.4 If you go with the Performance Edition, you’ll get a 0-60 in 3.1 seconds with an EPA estimated range of 315 miles.4

Fun To Drive Vs Practicality

The Polestar also has better driving dynamics, and together with the slightly stiffer damping, is clearly more of a driver’s car than the Tesla. While the former feels more planted around corners, the latter’s softer damping leads to excessive body roll. The Tesla manages to get the job done, but is simply not as involved, nor is its steering as weighted and accurate as the Polestar’s. Both cars also claim to have self-driving software, although it is still a work in progress in each case.

Where the two cars really differ is in range and efficiency. In their standard battery configurations with 19-inch wheels, the single-motor Polestar 2 can go 270 miles on a single charge, while the Tesla can do 267 miles, according to the EPA. However, while the Polestar is said to ship with a 78 kWh battery pack, the Tesla comes with only a 60 kWh battery, making it significantly more efficient. The difference in efficiency is even starker with the dual-motor models. The Polestar, which sticks with the same 78 kWh battery, can only run 249 miles before needing a recharge, while the Tesla can go 334 miles, thanks to a larger, 80kWh battery.

Fuel Economy And Real

The 2023 Polestar 2 with the single motor is rated at a combined 107 MPGe, and it has an estimated range of 270 miles. The dual-motor version is rated at a combined 89 MPGe, and it has an estimated range of 260 miles. On our 75-mph real-world highway route, our example traveled 190 miles on a full charge, which aligns with the Audi e-tron luxury SUV, but trails the Tesla Model 3 Long Range sedan, which managed 230 miles. With its roots in safety-leader Volvo, it is unsurprising that you can equip the 2022 Polestar 2 with a variety of advanced driving assistance systems . What is surprising is that many of them are not standard. The Polestar 2’s standard ADAS roster includes blind-spot warning and automatic forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

Should you desire more advanced safety features, the optional Pilot Lite Pack contains many of them. This package includes blind-spot warning assist, rear cross-traffic warning with brake assist, rear-collision warning and mitigation, and adaptive cruise control. Pilot Assist supplements the adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and lane-centering assistance. The Pilot Lite Pack also includes a 360-degree surround-view camera system and side parking sensors.

At this writing, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated or rated the crashworthiness of the Polestar 2.

The NHTSA has yet to rate the crashworthiness of the 2022 Tesla Model Y. However, the 2021 Model Y, structurally identical to the 2022 model, earned the top rating of 5 stars in all crash tests, as well as 5 stars for rollover resistance. Reportedly, the interior of the Tesla Model 3 is extremely comfortable. One car reviewer especially called out the driving position, saying it was close to perfection.

What About The Cabins

In most ways besides some wheel agitation on rougher roads, the Polestar 2 is a comfortable car. The seats themselves are supremely comfortable more Volvo vibes and the general quiet refinement of the Polestar is one of its best qualities. Youd say it feels like a more hefty, arguably more complete car than the Tesla Model 3.

The bare minimalism of the Teslas cabin can make it appear like Tesla bought a generic, unfurnished car dashboard and completed it by just gluing a massive screen to the thing. Thats really part of the appeal though. The Model 3 feels like its dispensed with unnecessary clutter, sort of like what Apple did with the first iPhone. Theres no instrument display behind the steering wheel, and no air vents or so it seems at first. Its a car built by a tech company, and it shows.

Polestar : A Brief Overview

Polestar 2 Vs Tesla Model 3: Electric Car SHOWDOWN | 4K

Although Polestar is no longer officially attached to Volvo, the long-running Swedish manufacturers influence is certainly evident in the 2s design.

The front lights, body panels and front grille look as though theyve been lifted from the Volvo XC40. And thats because they have been.

In fact, the Polestar 2 shares many mechanics with the XC40, but not everything. The Volvo is a crossover on the verge of an SUV, whereas the 2 is more of a raised saloon/hatchback type not really like anything else we see on the road.

And there are several other differences between the two, even if the original ingredients remain the same.

The biggest shift can be witnessed inside. Whereas the Polestar 1 a highly-expensive, limited-edition super-coupe cloned the inside of a Volvo S90, the Polestar 2 is very much its own being.

Originality can also be found through the frameless door mirrors, which add an edge of sophistication to the design, as does the full-width light bar at the rear.

So, yes, the Polestar 2 may be based on a Volvo XC40, but it has enough of its own spirit within it to be classed as a separate entity. And to look at, its really quite eye-catching.

Tesla Model 3 Vs Polestar : Looks

Many car reviewers said the newer Polestar 2 looks better and we agree with them. It’s got crisp, angular lines and a very modern aesthetic. We also like its chiselled profile and the inclusion of conventional elements like grilles and an SUV-like plastic lower trim.

The Polestar 2 rear is simple, with a large, seamless taillight and minimal visual clutter.

By comparison, the Tesla Model 3 is starting to look a little dated. It has a more curvaceous form than the Polestar 2 and tries to break tradition by having no large grilles at the front. It’s quite generic in styling and has been with us since 2019 .

I never thought I’d say this, but the Tesla Model 3 looks more conventional from the rear, partly due to its sedan body and the separate taillights. Die-hard Tesla fans will surely disagree.

Winner: Polestar 2

Looks are subjective, but to our eyes, the Polestar 2 has a crisp and chiselled aesthetic that makes the Model 3 appear a bit outmoded.
