Add How Far Can An Electric Car Go

These Are The Cheapest Electric Cars For Sale Right Now!

Most modern electric cars can go well over 100 miles before they need recharging, and many can cover over 250 miles in one charge.

How far an electric car travels between charges is called the range. An electric cars range can be affected by the cars weight, battery health and other factors including variables like the weather. For instance, if its cold, dark and raining and youre using your heater, lights and wipers this can drain the battery more quickly.

Older electric cars tend to have limited range. If youre looking at a used electric car, make sure you check the original claimed range and the health of the battery. Older batteries might not hold their charge as well, so will need charging more often. This doesnt mean used electric cars should be overlooked they can make an affordable and practical entry point to the electric car market you just need to be aware of any limitations and make sure a used electric car suits your lifestyle.

The Challenge For Audi

The man charged with making Audi electric vehicles a success is Stefan Niemand, the brandâs head of electrification. In an interview at Audi headquarters in the Bavarian city of Ingolstadt, the barrel-chested executive argued that the company is well prepared for its electric future. The next generation of electric vehicles, he says, will be cheaper and packed with technology that customers want. âWe learned a lot with the e-tron battery system, the crash system, the cooling system, the connection system and all this stuff. And of course, we now better understand where we can bring costs down, where we can optimize the system, where we can gain range or performance.â

The most important question is whether customers will respond to vehicles like the e-tron. âI think we did all that we can. We made the first car, and I think for the first car, itâs very, very good,â says Niemand.

Pressed on whether consumers are ready to adopt electric vehicles en masse, Niemand thinks back to his first experience with the R8 e-tron, an electric version of the Audi 2-seat sports car that has been tested in various forms since at least 2010. Before driving the car, a professional driver warned the executive that it would be much faster than he expected. Niemand said he thought the driver was joking. âThen I pushed the throttle, and ⦠I knew, forget about everything else.â

His experience left him in no doubt: âThis is the future.â

Are Electric Cars Safe

In a word, yes. Well, in as much as any car is. After all, any object so big and heavy travelling at speed is always going to carry risks of potential injury for anyone or anything it hits. For those inside the car, however, its thought that EVs are actually safer than their conventionally powered counterparts. This is because an EVs big, heavy battery pack is normally incorporated into the central structure of the car, usually in the floor, and this provides extra stiffness to the cars bodyshell, meaning better protection of the passenger compartment in a crash. Look at the Euro NCAP website, and youll notice that all dedicated EVs tested score the full five-star rating. Some worry about the risk of fire that the lithium-ion batteries used in EVs carry after all, there have been well-documented cases of such batteries catching fire in phones and laptops, so whats to stop it happening in a car? Well, manufacturers use a wide range of measures to prevent this happening, including super-strong steel casings to prevent damage, separation of cells to prevent fire spreading, and a whole host of fuses, circuit breakers and cooling systems. In fact, research suggests that EVs are actually less likely to catch fire than conventional cars as they dont carry flammable petrol or diesel.

What Do The Range Emissions And Rebate Values Mean

China New Design Long Range Small Electric Cars for Sale

Emissions are measured in grams/km of Carbon Dioxide . Combustion of fuel in your vehicles engine emits CO2 so the more fuel efficient your vehicle, the less CO2 it will produce. These emissions values are based on data from Rightcar NZ: learn more about their environmental ratings system here.

Range indicates the maximum distance a vehicle can go on its full electric charge capacity. It is based on tests by each individual manufacturer under controlled conditions. Real-life range results will vary depending on factors such as vehicle usage and operating conditions. You should not expect that the exact driving range figure will be achieved in real world driving conditions.

Rebate eligibility: under the Clean Car Programme, a rebate may apply for low emission vehicles registered in New Zealand for the first time, if their purchase price is under $80,000.

Used imports eligible for a rebate. Even if the new vehicle you are purchasing is listed as not eligible here, if you purchase it for under $80,000 as a used import, the vehicle may qualify for a rebate.

Vehicles On The Road In 2021

Around the world, governments and automakers are focused on selling newer, cleaner electric vehicles as a key solution to climate change. Yet it could take years, if not decades, before the technology has a drastic effect on greenhouse gas emissions.

One reason for that? It will take a long time for all the existing gasoline-powered vehicles on the road to reach the end of their life spans.

This fleet turnover can be slow, analysts said, because conventional gasoline-powered cars and trucks are becoming more reliable, breaking down less often and lasting longer on the road. The average light-duty vehicle operating in the United States today is 12 years old, according to IHS Markit, an economic forecasting firm. Thats up from 9.6 years old in 2002.

Engineering quality has gotten significantly better over time, in part because of competition from foreign automakers like Toyota, said Todd Campau, who specializes in automotive aftermarket analysis at IHS Markit.

year old

Today, Americans still buy roughly 17 million gasoline-burning vehicles each year. Each of those cars and light trucks can be expected to stick around for 10 or 20 years as they are sold and resold in used car markets. And even after that, the United States exports hundreds of thousands of older used cars annually to countries such as Mexico or Iraq, where the vehicles can last even longer with repeated repairs.

The cost of charging an electric car depends on where you charge it.

Charging an electric car from home, can be one of the cheapest ways to fuel any vehicle. Some providers offer electric-car tariffs, with specific rates for charging electric cars. You could be looking at as little as eight pence per mile.

The cost of charging using the public network varies depending on how much juice you need, which network is running the charging point, and the type of charging point youre using.

Rapid charging points tend to be the most expensive – around £7 for a 30-minute charge. But they can charge your car in less time, so you do get convenience for your money.

There are different types of charger available at different price points, so youll be able to charge an electric car on most fuel budgets. Learn more about charging your car in public here.

NEW Electric Cars with Cheapest Prices: Affordable EV Buying Guide for 2023

On average, it takes between 30 minutes and 12 hours to fully charge a car, depending on the size of the battery and the power of the charging point. A smaller battery wont take as long to fully charge but wont hold as much charge, so itll need recharging more often. The key is to find a comfortable balance and one that suits your average journey length. Learn more about electric car batteries.

A charging point with higher power output will take less time to charge a battery than a charging point with a lower power output . Just be aware using high-power chargers too often can sometimes damage the battery so, again, find a balance that works.

Working out how long youll take to charge is pretty simple: divide the kilowatt-hour of your battery by the kilowatt power of the charging point. For example, a 60kWh battery plugged into a 7kW charger takes eight hours to fully charge from flat.

Charging that same 60kWh battery at a 40kW rapid charger, theoretically, would only take 90 minutes from flat and much less for a top-up charge on the go.

Vinfast Vf 8 And Vf 9

Theres a new electric vehicle company in town: VinFast. Its home base is in Vietnam, and it plans to invest $4 billion in a manufacturing plant in North Carolina. The automaker showed two SUVs at the 2022 New York auto show, the VF 8 and VF 9. Both the VF 8 and the VF 9 feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system. The Eco version has 348 hp, and the Plus trim has 402 hp. Standard and long-range batteries are available in either model. VinFast says the VF 8 Eco with the standard battery has a 260-mile estimated driving range and a 5.8-second 0-to-60-mph time, while models equipped with the extended-range battery have an estimated 292-mile range and a 5.3-second 0-to-60 time.

VinFast has a unique twist on pricing, with a battery subscription on top of the vehicles purchase prices, tailored to the buyers expected usage. The company explains it this way: By separating the price of the battery from the acquisition value of the automobile, VinFast takes on all the risks related to the vehicles battery and ensures a reasonable price for its products, while providing customers with peace of mind about the batterys quality during use.

A key upside to their battery approach is that VinFast provides a lifetime battery warranty covering all maintenance and repair costs, and will replace the battery free when charging capacity dips below 70 percent. This should reduce some concerns among shoppers.

Do Electric Cars Lose Their Value

All cars electric or otherwise lose their value to some degree over time. This is known as depreciation. The question is, is the natural deprecation on electric cars any heavier than on conventionally powered cars?Well, the depreciation on any particular make and model of car depends on a wide number of variables, including how desirable it is and how dependable it is perceived to be. And a few years ago, when the first electric vehicles appeared on the market, depreciation on them was very heavy indeed. This was because car buyers had very little appetite for electric cars due to the difficulties over range and recharging, as well as a general lack of understanding on the realities of electric motoring. These days, however, that situation has pretty much turned on its head. The cars have got better in terms of range, quality and appeal the charging infrastructure has improved, and the general public now has a better understanding of and openness to electric motoring. This means theres now much more appetite for electric cars, both new and used, to the point where many now hold their value better than conventional cars. And as time goes on and electric motoring becomes more and more established, this gap will only get bigger.

7 Best New Electric Cars Coming in 2023

Surprising as it may be given that Mini is owned by BMW, the Mini Cooper SE is the cheapest electric car currently for sale in the US.

Launched in 2010, the Nissan Leaf is among the longest-running electric cars on the market today. The roughly $31,700 base model gets you an EPA-estimated 149 miles of range, while the $38,270 S Plus trim delivers 226 miles on a charge.
