I can see why there is confusion over how much it costs to charge your Tesla with different ways the costs are calculated, Supercharger stations and then Destination Stations. Add into that picture that some people are eligible for free Supercharging but only certain people, and it is easy to see why people struggle to get a straight answer.
Most people, apart from people who qualified for some form of free Supercharging, will pay for charging their vehicles at a Tesla Supercharger station, which is usually charged by the kW. Tesla car owners can also make use of Destination Chargers, which are often free but take longer to charge.
One of the biggest hesitations for buying an electric vehicle is charging, but probably the most confusing aspect of Teslas charging is cost. This is partly due to lots of different scenarios coming into play and there is a lot of conflicting information out there. However, I am confident I can clear up some of the confusion over the costs of charging your Tesla.
Why Have Some People Qualified For Unlimited Supercharging
Some people did qualify for unlimited supercharging, initially after the debut of the Model S back in 2012. However, this is no longer offered with new purchases.
Similar perks were initially offered with the Model X. From what we understand, Tesla still offers a select group of these free Supercharging perks however, Tesla has that it will be revamping its referral program so whether or not these perks will continue is not certain.
It is important to note that fully transferrable, free unlimited Supercharging has not been offered since 2017. However, we know that some vehicles may still have some form of free unlimited Supercharging. For instance, if you bought your Model Y in December 2020, you could possibly be eligible.
The Model 3 might also be eligible provided it is the performance trim and still with the original owner, and was purchased between 2018 and 2019. The Model X from 2016-2020 and Model S from 2012-2020 may also be eligible but it is best to confirm with Tesla.
Superchargers are Teslas primary network of charging stations, utilizing ultra-powerful 480-volt charging stations. They are designed to charge up the car for around an hour.
However, Destination Chargers are installed by Teslas Charging Partners, which are usually business or land owners who install a Tesla Wall Connector onto their property for the public to use.

How Much Does It Cost To Charge A Tesla Model Y
The Tesla Model Y weighs less than both the Model S and Model X, which is possibly why its equipped with a smaller battery. Both the Model Y Long Range and Performance trims come with a 75 kWh battery. The Long Range has an estimated 326-mile range, while the Performance has an estimated 303-mile range.
Since these numbers are different from what weve seen on the Model X and Model S vehicles, we should see a big difference in the total cost of a charge, as well as the cost per mile. Heres what a full charge from 0 to 100% would look like on the Model Y depending on the charging station:
Level 1 and 2 charging: About $12.08
Level 3 charging: $19.50
The total charging cost ends up being lower on the Model Y compared to the Model X and Model S because it has a smaller battery. This is similar to how a car with a smaller gas tank would likely cost less to fill up than a car with a larger gas tank.
Heres the breakdown of the cost per mile on the Model Y:
Overall, the numbers indicate that the Model Y has the lowest cost per mile among the three Tesla vehicles weve looked at. And not surprisingly, the Long Range trim is more cost-effective than the Performance. This is because they have the same battery, but the Long Range has more range.
What To Know About Tesla Adapters
Unlike most other EVs which use a J1772 charger, all Teslas have the same Tesla-specific charging port. You can still charge your Tesla using universal EV chargers on the go youll just need an adapter. Its not something youll have to buy separately, though, as SAE J1772 adapters are included as a standard accessory when you purchase any Tesla. In addition to charging with Tesla chargers and standard EV chargers, some chargers leverage CHAdeMO . CHAdeMO charging your Tesla will require an adapter, which costs just over $500.

How Come Some People Get Free Supercharging Miles
So, this is definitely where some of the confusion comes in since some people are eligible for free Supercharging miles. This is usually for owners that have participated in a previous Tesla Referral Program.
Owners can check if they have any free Supercharging miles and the expiration date via the Tesla app. If you sign in to your Tesla account and go to the vehicle linked to your account, select Manage and then View Details.
Here you will be able to see your Supercharging status, which will be Free Unlimited, Pay-Per-Use, or Timebound Supercharging. Once owners have run out of free Supercharging miles, they will be charged standard Supercharger fees after.

What are people saying about ev charging stations services near Northridge, Los Angeles, CA?
This is a review for a ev charging stations business near Northridge, Los Angeles, CA:
“Love this supercharger station. It’s very spacious so its really easy to back/reverse into the parking spaces. Charge amounts and speed is just as expected! There is also a strip mall right next to it so you can go get Jamba juice or a sandwich from Jersey Mike’s while you are charging. Very convenient location. The only negative to this place is that there are not enough charging stations in relation to the demand. There are always long lines and people don’t really line up so everyone has to play the guessing game as to who should pull into the next empty space. For the most part people are considerate but more charging stations would be nice. The parking lot is definitely big enough to hold many more.”

How Much Does It Cost To Charge A Tesla Model S
The Tesla Model S is similar to the Model X in that it also has the Long Range and Plaid currently on the road. Both of these options come with a 100 kWh battery, which is also the same as the Model X. However, the total estimated mileage range is different on the Model S trims compared to the Model X. Here, the Long Range has a 405-mile estimate, and the Plaid has a 396-mile estimate.
Using the same information about the average cents per kWh for residential usage, we can calculate how much it would cost to charge a Model S battery from 0% to 100%. Heres an estimate of how much it costs to charge a Tesla Model S at home with 85% efficiency for Level 1 and 2 charging and at a charging station with 100% efficiency for Level 3 charging:
Level 1 and 2 charging: About $16.10
Level 3 charging: $26.00
These numbers end up being exactly the same as the Model X because you have the same 100 kWh battery in the calculation. However, you can expect the cost per mile to be different since the ranges of the vehicles are slightly varied.
Heres what the cost per mile looks like on the Model S Long Range and Plaid:
The Model S Long Range also beats out the Plaid here because of its longer estimated range, which slightly decreases your cost per mile. However, the more powerful Plaids range is only an estimated nine miles less than the Long Range so the difference in cost per mile isnt huge.

What Are Idle Fees
Since Superchargers are meant to be a fast charging solution for Tesla vehicles, they are not meant to be used for parking. So, if owners park at a Supercharger after it has reached full charge, they will start to be charged idle fees.
The idle fees are however waived if the vehicle is moved in the five minutes after the vehicle has reached full charge.

What’s The Difference Between A Tesla Destination Charger And Supercharger
Superchargers are among the fastest EV charge points around, delivering electricity at up to 250kW – though 150kW Superchargers are more common. Destination chargers are much slower, at 7-22kW. And while Superchargers will often be located at motorway service stations and similar stop-off points, the clue is in the name for Destination chargers: these are found at places that are typically final destinations for drivers.

Can Teslas Charge At Non
Tesla owners can also use electric vehicle stations that are not part of Teslas charging network. To do this, you will need a J1772 charging adapter. J1772 adapters come with all Teslas. Simply attach the adapter to the charger and plug in!
These chargers wont charge as fast as a Supercharger, but theyll still get the job done.
See Nearby Superchargers On A Map
To find nearby Superchargers, Tesla offers a convenient web tool that can display an interactive map of charging stations. As soon as the website is loaded, the user may be asked whether they would like to share their current location with Tesla. If the user agrees to the location sharing, the webpage will refresh and automatically show a map of the user’s current location and nearby Superchargers. However, if the user declines to share their location, it’s still easy to view nearby Superchargers. Simply enter a city, street, or postal code into the search bar at the top left corner of the site, and the page will show available Superchargers in the area.
After a nearby Supercharger is found, a ton of information can be shown about the station on the webpage. On the map, Superchargers will be identified by red circles with a lighting bolt inside, and clicking on that icon will present the details of the charging station. For example, users can view how many charging stalls are at the station, when they are available, and the maximum charging power available. In addition, there are notes such as whether there is free WiFi, restrooms or restaurants nearby. Using the interactive Supercharger map on Tesla’s website makes it easy to plan a charging stop while a driver is away from home.
