Toyota Prius Prime: A Plug In Hybrid, How Does It Work?

Given this generation’s advanced age, we have to believe that a new Prius is right around the corner. Alas, Toyota’s ultra-popular hybrid soldiers on virtually unchanged from last year’s model. The primary difference is that the 2020 Edition trim level has been replaced by the Nightshade variant. But since they share a similar feature set, you can think of this as a mere name change.

Fuel Economy Ratings And Range For The 2022 Prius

Here is where the Prius shines. The 2022 Prius offers up to 56 mpg combined and 58 mpg in city-only driving. Though the Prius is one of the oldest hybrids on the market, its still one of the most efficient.

An 11.4-gallon gas tank means that the 2022 Toyota Prius should be able to cruise for about 660 miles on a full tank without needing to stop for a refuel. Like all-electric vehicles, your hybrid cars range may vary based on driving habits, conditions, and other factors. You may see more or fewer miles on a tank of gas when driving a Prius.

Under the hood, the 2022 Prius comes standard with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing 121 horsepower. Most models come with front-wheel drive, but an all-wheel drive Prius is available.

What Do People Think Of The2022 Toyota Prius

Consumer ratings and reviews are also available for the 2022 Toyota Prius and all its trim types. Overall, Edmunds users rate the 2022 Prius 5.0 on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. Edmunds consumer reviews allow users to sift through aggregated consumer reviews to understand what other drivers are saying about any vehicle in our database. Interior Comfort And Cargo

The dashboard layout is unconventional, with a stubby electronic shifter sticking straight out of the center of the dash and a digital gauge cluster placed between the driver and front-seat passenger instead of directly in front of the driver. While the passenger cabin of the Prius Prime and the standard Prius hybrid are equally roomy, the Prime’s cargo hold is meaningfully diminished by its larger battery. It provides less real-world luggage space than the standard Prius and some of its competition. Interior storage is ample, but family road trips will be a tight fit.

Toyota has made large portions of its driver-assistance tech standard across all models. Despite the generous standard offerings, blind-spot monitoring is optional, an omission that might motivate buyers into the Prime’s more expensive upper trim levels. For more information about the Prius Prime’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Standard adaptive cruise control

The Toyota Prius hybrid was a milestone in the history of clean cars, attracting millions of buyers worldwide who could do their part for the environment while saving money on gasoline.

But in recent months, Toyota, one of the worlds largest automakers, has quietly become the industrys strongest voice opposing an all-out transition to electric vehicles which proponents say is critical to fighting climate change.

Last month, Chris Reynolds, a senior executive who oversees government affairs for the company, traveled to Washington for closed-door meetings with congressional staff members and outlined Toyotas opposition to an aggressive transition to all-electric cars. He argued that gas-electric hybrids like the Prius and hydrogen-powered cars should play a bigger role, according to four people familiar with the talks.

Together with other automakers, Toyota also sided with the Trump administration in a battle with California over the Clean Air Act and sued Mexico over fuel efficiency rules. In Japan, Toyota officials argued against carbon taxes.

Engine Transmission And Performance

The Prius Prime has a four-cylinder engine that works with an electric motor, a battery pack, and a continuously variable automatic transmission to maximize the Prime’s efficiency. In that regard, it succeeds, but the miserly powertrain is otherwise uninspiring. The Prime switches effortlessly and smoothly between gas and electric propulsion, while three driving modes attempt to affect the perception of acceleration. None will produce anything approaching quickness. Its battery can recharge at either a standard 120-volt household outlet, which takes about 5.5 hours, or in about two hours at a 240-volt outlet. The Prime is generally comfortable and suitable for jaunts around town. However, its ride turns jittery and harsh when it encounters badly blemished pavement. Clicking the shifter into the B position increases regenerative braking and causes the Prime to slow down noticeably as soon as the driver lifts off the accelerator. In Normal mode, drivers won’t notice the Prime’s regen, and while the transition from regenerative to friction braking is smooth, it’s difficult to brake gently or early enough to stay in the Eco zone of the Prius’s driving meter.

Government And Corporate Incentives

There have been a number of governments with incentives intended to encourage hybrid car sales. In some countries, including the US and Canada, some rebate incentives have been exhausted, while other countries such as the United Kingdom, Sweden, Belgium, and the Netherlands have various or alternative incentives to purchasing a hybrid vehicle.

Several US companies offer employees incentives. Bank of America will reimburse US$3,000 on the purchase of new hybrid vehicles to full- and part-time associates working more than 20 hours per week., software company Hyperion Solutions, andorganic food and drink producer Clif Bar & Co offer employees a US$5,000 credit toward their purchase of certain hybrid vehicles including the Prius. Is The Prius An Electric Car

It depends which model of Prius you’re talking about. The original Prius was a first generation hybrid, meaning it drives on both electricity and petrol. However the electric motor in a Prius makes the petrol engine operate at a much more efficient level, and anecdotally give an efficiency of 4.5 litres petrol per 100 km driven. But, and this is the big but, a original Prius cannot drive without petrol and it has no plug to charge the electric battery. Driving the original Prius charges the electric battery, and there is some regen whilst braking and travelling downhill, which is fed into the electric battery.

However, Toyota do now make a plug-in Prius, the Prius Prime, which makes it a PHEV, but sadly in NZ you see very few on the roads. Toyota has only recently started selling used / refurbished Prius Prime cars in NZ. These are EVs as they can be driven up to 40km on battery alone, provided you don’t go over 105kph, at which point the petrol motor kicks in.

What you can say about a original Prius is that it was a handy stepping stone towards full BEV cars, and it seems mad that Toyota threw away the head start they owned in the early 2000’s.

Electric Perfection Is Enemy Of Hybrid

HONG KONG, Aug 16 – Theres a place for the hybrid electric car. Activists are attacking companies like Toyota for not ditching them fast enough in favour of purely battery-powered cars, while politicians prepare to wind down subsidies for or outright ban motors that mix electricity and gasoline. Purging the internal combustion engine is the ultimate goal, but thats a long way off. Forcing the pace of change could leave middle-class consumers and poor countries behind and even spark a grassroots backlash against clean cars in general.

Plenty of major car brands still like hybrids Chinas Li Auto makes nothing else. There were over 5 million of them on the worlds roads in 2021, per International Energy Agency estimates, or 30% of the electric-vehicle total. Toyota argues that policies banning ICE and hybrid cars are coming too quickly. It even threatened in July to close its UK factories if the government there follows through on its threat to ban the technology by 2030.

More recently, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, an industry lobby group, argued in closed-door meetings in Washington that the California compromise, which is expected to be a model for new standards from the Biden administration, is in fact not feasible for all of its members, according to two of the people with direct knowledge of the discussions. The chairman of the alliance is Mr. Reynolds, the Toyota executive.

The Biden administration wants to use tougher emissions rules to rapidly increase sales of electric vehicles. Congress could also approve billions of dollars for construction of charging stations as well as tax incentives for electric cars and trucks.

Japanese carmaker Toyota, the company that set fire to the eco-friendly driving narrative with its Prius hybrid, has finally announced that it will make an all-electric battery-powered vehicle.

According to reports, Toyota will unveil a new all-electric SUV in the next few months. It seems there is not a confirmed date, as yet.

This will be Toyotas first all-electric vehicle, outside of China that is. Last year, Toyota took the covers off its C-HR, its battery-electric compact SUV that shares a platform with the Corolla.

How We Calculated This Number

Toyota Prius

The estimated savings calculator uses a number of factors to determine your potential savings when switching to an electric vehicle. These include fuel cost savings for 20,000 km/year based on the average weekly price of mid-grade fuel in Metro Vancouver, at-home charging costs based on battery size and electricity price of $0.1118/kWh, and fuel costs incurred for PHEVs when daily mileage is over the electric range.

Fuel Economy And Real

All three Prius Prime models have the same EPA ratings, which are 55 mpg city and 53 highway for the gasoline engine. Combined with electricity from the hybrid system, the government estimates it will earn 133 MPGe. This makes the Prime a good choice for fuel-conscious buyersbut its limited electric-only driving range is a demerit. An EPA-rated 25 miles of pure-electric range may be enough for some daily commutes, but the Hyundai Ioniq plug-in hybrid has a slightly longer range of 29 miles. Likewise, the Primes we tested on our 200-mile fuel-economy route missed their EPA highway rating. However, since we test at a considerably higher speed than the EPA, we’d be impressed by any plug-in that was able to equal its EPA number. In hybrid mode, the Prime Plus earned 47 mpg highway and the Premium model earned 49 mpg. We also tested each in EV mode where the Plus earned 116 MPGe and the Premium earned 118. For more information about the Prius Prime’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.
