Battery Power Charge Times And Range

Every 2023 Solterra SUV is propelled by dual electric motors, one for each axle, creating a form of all-wheel drive. Combined output is 215 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque, with each motor generating the same muscle.

The floor-mounted lithium-ion battery pack requires about nine hours for a full charge from a 240-volt source like a home charging setup. A DC fast charger can bring the battery up to 80% in just under an hour. Some rivals enjoy faster charging times, like the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Subaru puts the maximum range at 228 miles for the Premium version. The Limited and Touring trims, with larger wheels, are capable of 222 miles. Note: The EPA calculates energy consumption for electric vehicles as a miles-per-gallon equivalent .

Subaru Solterra Ev Has Lots Of Room But Its Battery Is Too Small

It has many of the same positives and negatives as the almost identical Toyota bZ4X

The 2023 Subaru Solterra the brands first widely offered all-electric car its also related to the Toyota bZ4X. But other than the Subaru badging and the ever-so-slightly different nose and tail treatments, theres little to visually distinguish the Solterra from the bZ4X. Its only when you dig into the details that you can tease out the differences. And frankly, those arent particularly meaningful.

This shared-platform approach isnt all-new ground for the automakers, who have been selling the almost identical Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 sporty cars, which are currently in their second generation, for almost 10 years. But thats a niche market, and there is further differentiation between those clones.

Electric vehicle sales are increasing every year, and it seems as if a new EV is being introduced every month. So into this competitive market comes the Solterra, which, like the bZ4X, is a competent if unexciting entry that has some things going for it but a number of shortcomings.

To gain early experience with this significant new model, we rented a preproduction vehicle from the automaker.

Japan’s Subaru To Build Its First Electric Vehicle Factory

TOKYO, May 12 – Subaru Corp aims to build a dedicated electric vehicle factory in Japan in the late 2020s, it said on Thursday, as part of a $1.9 billion ramp-up to respond to surging demand for battery cars in its main North American market.

Subaru, known for its Outback crossover, has long had a strong presence in the United States and on Thursday warned that its U.S. dealers only have a record low stockpile of around 5,000 vehicles left, reflecting the squeeze of a supply-chain crunch.

It plans to launch a mixed-production line of gasoline and electric vehicles around 2025 before opening an EV-only production line in the new factory after 2027, it said. The move would be a first for Subaru. Other Japanese automakers have yet to formally announce plans to build a dedicated EV factory.

Japan’s automakers are accelerating their EV production in an attempt to recover ground lost to Tesla Inc , now the leader in the fastest growing segment of the auto industry.

“The market for EVs has been changing very rapidly over the past year,” said Subaru CEO Tomomi Nakamura.

It plans to invest 250 billion yen over the next five years to bolster electrification.

The vehicles produced in the new factory would be exported overseas, Nakamura said, declining to reveal specifics about production capability and whether it would make Toyota Motor Corp cars.

We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBBs editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better than the other cars its competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built?

Subaru Will Start Building Evs From Mid

Subaru currently offers the Solterra electric crossover. It’s built by Toyota and based on the Toyota bZ4X.

TOKYO — Electric vehicle laggard Subaru will step up its pace in the battery-car race by adding an in-house EV assembly plant in Japan from about 2027.

The move is part of a multibillion-dollar investment in electrification over the next five years.

Subarus outlay shows the all-wheel drive specialist is finally turning its focus to full-electric vehicles after introducing its first serious contender, the Solterra crossover EV, only this year.

Unlike the Solterra, the EVs produced in the latter half of this decade will be manufactured directly by Subaru.

The Solterra, which shares a Toyota-developed EV platform with the Toyota bZ4X, is made at Toyotas Motomachi assembly plant on the same line as the sibling nameplate.

Subaru CEO Tomomi Nakamura outlined the plans on Thursday while announcing fiscal year earnings.

Subaru will begin making its own EVs in mixed production with internal combustion vehicles at its Yajima plant in Japan in the mid-2020s. From about 2027, Subaru will build a dedicated EV factory on the site of its Oizumi plant, which now makes engines and transmission.

The EVs made there will be exported globally to markets including the U.S., Nakamura said. Subaru is still contemplating what kind of segment or models the upcoming EVs will be, he added.

A Shared Platform With All

The Solterra is another joint project that Subaru has done alongside Toyota, which means that some of the design, especially the interior bits, look a lot like Toyota, while the exterior, chassis and the all-wheel-drive system is all Subaru. Toyota also handled the battery sourcing.

That battery is a 71.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack slung low between the axles and paired to two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear. Subaru estimates the range to be around 220-plus miles and says that the Solterra can be charged from 0-80% in just about 30 minutes using DC fast chargers.

The powertrain makes 215 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque much of which is readily available at the low end, potentially making the Solterra a decent soft-roader.

At an offsite unveiling last week, the electric-ute climbed up and over a small rocky path and through a shallow pond before stopping in front of the gathered press for photos, showing off its light off-road prowess.

At last weeks event, Subaru also ran footage of Solterra testing on off-road obstacles like stairs, and offset ramps, to show just how capable the small-ute could be. It even pitted it against competitors like the Jaguar I-Pace on the same obstacles.

While pricing has yet to be officially announced, Subaru says that buyers can expect it to start around $39,000. Subaru will start selling the 2023 Solterra in mid-2022.

Driving The 2023 Subaru Solterra

New Subaru Solterra electric SUV walkaround â the best EV off-road? | What Car?

Acceleration is brisk, but not crazy. And the new Solterra electric SUV has a sporty driving mode for quicker responses. Even then, the fun pedal isnt too sensitive.

Speaking of pedals, Subaru says the Solterra has a one-pedal driving function along with four levels of brake regeneration. This implies the kind of one-pedal driving trick thats a boon in electric vehicles. Yet with brake regeneration at its highest setting, the Solterra wont come to a complete stop when the driver lifts off the accelerator.

However, driving the Solterra SUV is generally pleasant, with a comfortable ride and predictable handling. If theres some mild off-roading in a Solterra owners future, the abilities are here.

The X-Mode all-wheel-drive system uses the brakes to simulate the kind of torque distribution achieved by a limited-slip differential. This method isnt quite so effective, but it gets the job done. Ground clearance of 8.3 inches is useful. The system has Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes. And the standard-issue Grip Control is a low-speed cruise control of sorts.

Other advantages of electric power in these unpaved situations include the abundant torque available at low speeds, the lack of engine noise , and no spewing of hydrocarbons over the sagebrush. Just make sure theres enough juice in the battery to reach the next charger.
