Welcome To A New Era Of Electric Vehicles
The IONIQ 5 marks the beginning of a new era of clean mobility for Hyundai. Blurring the line between digital and analogue, the new battery-electric midsize SUV is the flagship model behind Hyundais new signature dedicated EV architecture. This is just a small taste of whats to come in the new IONIQ range.
Hyundai Ioniq 6 Is A Tesla Model 3 Rival
We had confirmed that Hyundai will showcase the Ioniq 6 EV sedan at the Auto Expo, which would make it the third EV offering globally after the Kona EV and the Ioniq 5. The design of the EV sedan is closely related to the Prophecy concept, which was also showcased at the previous Auto Expo. The Ioniq 6 uses the Hyundai groups e-GMP skateboard architecture which also underpins the Kia EV6 and the Ioniq 5.
The Ioniq 6, which is a full-size sedan, gets a distinct swooping design with multiple creases, and the brand claims that with all its design elements, it has a drag co-efficient of just 0.21Cd. Speaking of dimensions, it closely matches to the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2 and the BMW i4, in size, which is also sold here.
The Ioniq 6 comes with two battery size options the entry-level 53kWh and the larger 77kWh . The single motor RWD set-up is standard across the range, with the higher variants getting a dual motor AWD option as well. The Ioniq 6 dual motor makes 320hp and 605Nm, which is the same as the Ioniq 5, while the RWD set-up churns out 228hp and 350Nm. In terms of WLTP-certified range, the Ioniq 6 does 429km for the RWD 53kWh version, 614km for the RWD with the 77.4kWh battery, while the AWD version does 583km.

Features Of The Hyundai Ioniq 5

There are three trim levels, though the entry-level one is really just there to hit a price point and mid-level Premium is worth the stretch given it opens up a wider range of battery and drive options, as well as throwing in more kit as standard . Saying that, all versions get a 12.3-inch central touch-screen with built-in navigation and connected infotainment, along with CarPlay and Android Auto if you prefer to use your phone apps. This is paired with a similarly sized digital instrument cluster for a widescreen effect similar to that on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and its various relatives. While its impressive that Hyundai includes this as standard the physical borders around the screens mean it cant match the slick, premium feel of the Mercedes set-up, or others like the Honda E. Trim and seating options get progressively fancier as you work up to the top trim level, this one getting leather upholstery and more. This model also gets Hyundais nifty Vehicle 2 Load or V2L package, which means you can turn your IONIQ 5s charge port into a power source for charging electric bikes or whatever else you might want to run off a domestic style three-pin socket. In theory you could even charge another electric car off it, assuming that leaves enough charge in your own battery to get you home afterwards!

What’s An Electric Vehicle
The IONIQ 5 is a so-called battery electric vehicle or BEV for short. All-electric vehicles such as IONIQ 5 dont use any combustible fuel and therefore emit zero tailpipe emissions. And because they also dont have a clutch or gears, costly maintenance is reduced and acceleration off the line is fast thanks to plenty of instant torque. That smooth and fast acceleration makes for a very dynamic and exciting drive.
Zero tailpipe emissions.
Since the IONIQ 5 doesnt burn petrol or diesel, it produces zero tailpipe emissions while providing a driving range of up to 507 km.
No oil changes. Less maintenance.
Electric vehicles cost less to maintain because they dont need an oil tank, a transmission system or a catalytic converter which means lower maintenance costs and no more oil changes.
Instant acceleration.
Lightning quick off the line, youll love the very sporty acceleration. The IONIQ 5 goes from 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds in the dual motor all-wheel drive version with the 77.4 kWh battery.
Con: Base Models Missing Features
While the SE offers an impressive array of safety features, it starts at $44,000 and misses out on many basic amenities. For instance, the SE does not have rear climate control vents rather, that’s only available in higher trims. Some other features the Ioniq 5 SE misses out on are wireless phone charging, automatic windshield wipers, auto/up down windows, non-textured window trim, and front parking distance indicators. While buyers can live without these features, it’s hard not to consider that many far less expensive options offer these as standard.

Leading The Charge Into The Electric Era With E
IONIQ 5 is the first vehicle built on Hyundais new Electric-Global Modular Platform . This dedicated battery electric vehicle platform enables faster charging, increased driving range, more interior space and better handling. The battery packs position within the wheelbase ensures ideal weight distribution between the front and rear and a low centre of gravity for improved handling performance.
Space In The Back Seats
In the back there is loads of headroom, and loads of legroom. Higher-spec models get control buttons on the front passenger seat too, which means you can slide it forward from the comfort of the back seats if you want.
Because the floor is totally flat, you can easily fit an adult in the middle seat too. Even taller adults sitting here will still find theres a good amount of space between the tops of their noggins and the roof lining. Should you want to fine-tune your levels of comfort even more, then you can do so by reclining the rear seats. The only quibble is that the floor is relatively high up, so taller passengers might find that their legs are more folded up than they would like.
The Isofix car seat anchors are easy to find too, and the back doors open up fairly wide so loading in a car seat or strapping in an unruly toddler shouldnt be more stressful than it needs to be.

Cost To Drivecost To Drive Estimates For The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited 4dr Suv Awd And Comparison Vehicles Are Based On 15000 Miles Per Year And Energy Estimates Of $012 Per Kwh For Electricity And $369 Per Gallon Average In North Dakota
For 2023, a battery heating system is now standard for all models instead of only all-wheel-drive versions, and a battery preconditioning function is newly available. It prepares the battery for faster charging if an EV fast charger is set as a destination in the navigation system. Towing capacity grows from 1,650 pounds to 2,300 pounds for all models with the larger extended-range battery. AWD models also get 10 more miles of estimated range, up to 266 miles, and they’re slightly more efficient as well. EV enthusiasts pining for an N-branded performance version of the Ioniq 5 will have to wait a bit longer, it seems. That vehicle was rumored to appear for 2023, but the latest info suggests it won’t come out until the 2024 model year.
There are a few minor drawbacks to Hyundai’s Ioniq 5, but on the whole it’s a great pick for an electric SUV. Check out our test team’s Expert Rating below to get our full report on its performance, real-world range and more.

Style Power And Range
The 2022 Ioniq 5 features an advanced designslab sides punctuated by sharp creases, a grill-free nose and a clamshell hood that minimizes sheet metal gaps for improved air flow, pixilated digital lighting and a glass roof on the top trim.
Its angular exterior design, a short rear overhang and steeply forward-canted rear glass make the Ioniq 5 look more like a hatchback than the crossover it is. The new platform allows for a flat floor and stretched-out wheelbase that give it the interior space of a large sedan with the exterior dimensions of a large compact or smallish midsize crossover.
The Ioniq 5s wheelbase stretches 118 inches, almost 4 inches longer than the Hyundai Palisade three-row SUV, but is a full 14 inches shorter on the outside. That wheelbase is longer than the Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID.4 or Tesla Model Y, which gives the Hyundai a competitive 41.7 inches of legroom up front and more rear legroom 39.4 inches than any of its electric competitors.
One of them, Kias EV6, a battery-electric crossover that shares the Ioniq 5s underpinnings and powertrain, will be a direct competitor although in design and equipment it appears aimed at younger buyers than the more conventional-looking Ioniq 5.
An overall length of 15.2 feet gives the Ioniq 5 a compact package thats 4.5 inches shorter than the Model Y and 3.1-inches shorter than the Mach-E.
