How Does The Powerwall Work
Powerwall works with or without solar and allows you to store energy for later use. Each Powerwall system consists of at least one Powerwall and a Backup Gateway, which manages the system’s energy usage and does energy monitoring.
Like the rest of Tesla’s products, the Backup Gateway gets over-the-air updates and can control up to ten Powerwalls. It also learns from and adjusts to your energy usage over time.
When combined with a solar photovoltaic system, solar energy starts to power the house when the Sun rises. The house can tap into the energy grid when more power is needed.
During the day, solar panels often produce more electricity than the house uses, and this excess energy is then used to charge the Powerwall’s batteries. Once solar energy is no longer being produced at night, or if the utility grid is down due to a power outage, Powerwall then releases energy back into your home on demand.
When the Sun rises again the next day, the cycle starts again.
When not combined with solar panels, the Powerwall can provide the user with battery backup.
Powerwall will also charge when electricity costs are low and discharge when electricity costs are high, resulting in automatic savings if your electricity rates fluctuate throughout the day. Powerwall will also act as a backup power source by immediately taking over as the home’s primary power source when it detects grid interruptions.

Tesla Powerwall Version History
There are currently three versions of the Tesla Powerwall in existence, with a fourth apparently in the works for Spring 2023.
The first version of the Powerwall was a DC battery that launched in 2015. This version has since been discontinued.
This was followed closely by the Powerwall 2 in 2016, an AC battery with more than doubled the capacity of the original version.
Early Powerwall models and competitors, such as Sonnen and LG, are DC batteries, which require a separate inverter to convert electricity to AC before it sending it to the home or grid.
For the Powerwall 2, this inverter is part of the package, streamlining the configuration by eliminating the need for the separate inverter. However, the Powerwall 2 still required a separate solar inverter in order to receive and store solar output.
The latest version is the Powerwall+. The Powerwall+ is essentially the Powerwall 2 with the addition of a built-in solar inverter. This allows the Powerwall+ to directly receive DC electricity from solar panels and eliminates the need for yet another series of solar inverters.

Where Are Tesla Powerwalls Made
The lithium batteries used in the Powerwall are manufactured at the massive Tesla manufacturing facility known as the Gigafactory, which is located in the Nevada state of Nevada.
To power the Powerwall, Panasonic collaborated with the company to produce lithium NMC battery cells that are identical to the Lithium NCA batteries that power the Tesla electric vehicles.
