How Much Is The Tesla Powerwall

You Can Store Solar Energy With Them

What you need to know before getting a Tesla Powerwall

Powerwall lets you store some excess solar energy when combined with solar panels. You’ll use less grid power and get more from your solar energy.

Since the lack of adequate storage solutions for renewable systems like solar panels is one of their significant criticisms , the Powerwall is an excellent way to further justify investing in renewable solutions for your home.

For this reason alone, if you have solar panels, getting a Powerwall is a no-brainer .

Is The Powerwall Worth It

The Tesla Powerwall isn’t cheap, and whether or not it’s worth it depends on how you currently power your home. However, if you have solar panels or are about to buy them, the Powerwall is well worth considering. It’s competitively priced, well-designed, and from a reputable company.

If you don’t have solar panels, or you are buying them in the hope of lower energy bills, it’s important to calculate the savings before you buy one. A Powerwall will save some people money, but how much depends on the difference in rates between the day and night.

The reliability of your electrical grid is also worth considering. If you live in an area with regular power outages, you might find the cost of a Powerwall is worth it, even if it doesn’t save you money.

How Many Solar Panels Are Needed To Charge A Tesla Powerwall 2

When calculating the solar energy needed to charge a Tesla Powerwall 2, it’s the rating of the panels in your solar PV system as much as the number of panels that determine how much energy they can generate to charge the battery storage system. The ratings of your panels, when added together, give a number of kW that can feed into the Powerwall battery, but some of this electricity will also be used by your building at the same time.

For example, a fairly large residential 4 kW solar array could produce around 20 kWh of electricity on an average sunny summer day, which would be enough to fully charge a Tesla Powerwall 2 and run your home. A Powerwall can run an average home throughout spring, summer and autumn, and for even longer if your demand is low.

At times of the year with less hours of light and sunshine, the same solar array might only produce about a quarter of the kWh that it does in the summer, which usually means that you will need to use more electricity from the grid, along with your Tesla Powerwall 2.

Battery Capacity And Chemistry

The Tesla Powerwall is a lithium-ion battery that uses lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide technology. NMC batteries are the most common solar battery, lasting up to 12 years. They have a large internal battery storage capacity but a compact exterior.

Both Powerwalls boast an internal storage capacity of 13.5 kilowatt-hours . They can provide an average of two days of power, depending on your panels sun exposure. The Powerwall can provide one day of backup power during winter or on cloudy days. Its capacity extends to 2.5 days during summer. With two Powerwalls, your backup power can reach 1.5 days on cloudy days and more than seven days with full sun exposure.

Most homes need one or two batteries, but you can add up to 10.

Are You Pairing Your Powerwall With Solar

Whether or not your battery is paired with solar is another important consideration. If you only have a standalone Powerwall, in the event of a blackout this battery will be your only source of energy. You wont be able to recharge it until grid power resumes. However, if you have a solar system as well, youll be able to recharge the Powerwall almost indefinitely, with the battery storing the energy produced from your panels.

How Does The Powerwall Work

Powerwall works with or without solar and allows you to store energy for later use. Each Powerwall system consists of at least one Powerwall and a Backup Gateway, which manages the system’s energy usage and does energy monitoring.

Like the rest of Tesla’s products, the Backup Gateway gets over-the-air updates and can control up to ten Powerwalls. It also learns from and adjusts to your energy usage over time.

When combined with a solar photovoltaic system, solar energy starts to power the house when the Sun rises. The house can tap into the energy grid when more power is needed.

During the day, solar panels often produce more electricity than the house uses, and this excess energy is then used to charge the Powerwall’s batteries. Once solar energy is no longer being produced at night, or if the utility grid is down due to a power outage, Powerwall then releases energy back into your home on demand.

When the Sun rises again the next day, the cycle starts again.

When not combined with solar panels, the Powerwall can provide the user with battery backup.

Powerwall will also charge when electricity costs are low and discharge when electricity costs are high, resulting in automatic savings if your electricity rates fluctuate throughout the day. Powerwall will also act as a backup power source by immediately taking over as the home’s primary power source when it detects grid interruptions.

Pretty neat.

Tesla Powerwall Version History

There are currently three versions of the Tesla Powerwall in existence, with a fourth apparently in the works for Spring 2023.

The first version of the Powerwall was a DC battery that launched in 2015. This version has since been discontinued.

This was followed closely by the Powerwall 2 in 2016, an AC battery with more than doubled the capacity of the original version.

Early Powerwall models and competitors, such as Sonnen and LG, are DC batteries, which require a separate inverter to convert electricity to AC before it sending it to the home or grid.

For the Powerwall 2, this inverter is part of the package, streamlining the configuration by eliminating the need for the separate inverter. However, the Powerwall 2 still required a separate solar inverter in order to receive and store solar output.

The latest version is the Powerwall+. The Powerwall+ is essentially the Powerwall 2 with the addition of a built-in solar inverter. This allows the Powerwall+ to directly receive DC electricity from solar panels and eliminates the need for yet another series of solar inverters.

Tesla Mobile App Functionality

Tesla have developed a mobile app, supported on android and iOS app stores. This enables users to view the real-time operation and performance history of their Tesla Powerwall 2 and if applicable their Tesla EV as well. App users can monitor system performance if combined with Solar PV and can switch the battery between 3 modes: Back-Up only, Self-powered and Time-based control.

  • Back Up Only switches the battery to store all possible energy and keep the battery full. This means in the event of a black out power will continue for the system and can potentially last for weeks if coupled with a sufficiently sized Solar PV system.
  • Self Powered This mode maxmised the financial utility of the battery enabling a household to capatilise on as much free energy from their rooftop prior to drawing any energy from the grid and incurring a cost from their local electricity retailer. This is the common purpose for residential batteries as homeowners seek to tackle evening and early morning power usage.
  • Time-based Control If the owner has a time-based electricity charge from their retailer, then the Tesla Powerwall 2 has the smarts to charge only at the off-peak rates and discharge the power at peak rates. The actual financial benefit available depends on the tariffs of the electricity retailer, but are generally insufficient to merit the investment into a battery system alone.
