Tesla vs Gas: TRUE Charging Cost After 75,000 Miles

Finally, there’s the Tesla Model Y. Whether you get the Long Range or Performance Model Y, each version has a 75 kWh battery. Charging the Model Y from 0-100 at home, the average cost will be around $10.29. If you take your Model Y to a Supercharger, that number increases to roughly $18 for a full charge.

What Is The Cost Of Charging A Tesla If You Use A Home Solar

Charging a Tesla can be even cheaper when you install a home solar power system. If your home is well suited for solar panels, solar power can be produced for as little as 5 cents per kilowatt hour. This will allow you to charge your Tesla for even less than the estimated above.

So, how much would it cost to charge your Tesla with solar power? Depending on the Tesla model, charing the car with solar power would cost somewhere between $3.78 and $6.07. Thats substantially less than what you would pay to charge with electricity from the grid.

Let’s take a dive into the math.

A 6 kilowatt solar system will cost around $17,100 before the 30% solar tax credit, and around $11,970 after. Depending on how much sunlight your area gets, a 6 kW system will generate between 6,130 and 10,500 kWh of electricity per year. That works out to paying roughly 5.16 cents per kWh of solar electricity the system produces over its 25-year lifespan.

This is substantially lower than the average cost of $0.15 per kWh of electricity from the grid in the U.S. Admittedly, this doesn’t take into account the time cost of money. But with interest rates on deposits close to zero, that doesn’t change the numbers that much.

From just your address and monthly power bill our calculator can work out how many panels you need and your likely savings. It also allows you to compare prices charged by local solar companies if you wish to do so.

Cost Of Charging An Electric Car At Home

Charging your electric car at home is the main charging option for most EV owners. It’s important to be on the best home energy tariff to keep this cost as low as possible because the cost of charging will be included in your normal electricity bill.

How much charging costs will depend on the amount of charging you do, the type of charger you have and also how much you use public charging.

The cost of installing a home charge point is around £1,000 but with the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles grant, you could reduce the upfront cost by up to £350. However, unless you live in a flat or rental accommodation, you won’t be able to claim this grant after 31st March 2022.

Does It Cost Less To Drive A Tesla For A Year

If you calculate the average of all Tesla models, it costs $614.51 to charge per year. Comparable gas-powered cars cost an average of $2,245.10 to fuel per year. So, Teslas cost approximately $1,631 less to drive each year than gas vehicles. This is calculated by using the average U.S. gas prices from AAA and electricity prices from nationwide EnergySage data as of April 2022, along with the average distance driven according to the Department of Transportation of 13,476 miles each year.

How Much Does it Cost to Charge a Tesla?

One of the perks of driving a Tesla is that youre not compelled to fill-up at one of the companys fast chargers.

Sure, the latest 250 kW DC Supercharger could add up to 1,000 miles in an hour, or 75 miles in 5 minutes, but charging at home is a lot cheaper.

Using a 120V Level-1 AC home charger might take a Model 3 owner 14 to 21 hours to fully charge from empty, but this will come at a much lower cost.

For instance, if you live in Georgia where your average cost per kWh is less than $0.10, filling up the 75 kWh battery on a Long Range Model 3 or Model Y from 10 kWh to 70 kWh, would cost about $6.00. Even using the national average residential cost of electricity of 13.31 cents per kWh in May 2021, charging at home is less than 50 percent of the cost of fast charging.

Based on 45 percent highway, 55 percent city driving and 15,000 annual miles, Forbes magazine, in September 2020, claimed a Tesla Model 3 Long-Range would cost the owner about $500 in electricity.

In another evaluation by motoring magazine Car and Driver, using the national residential average electricity cost and a Model 3s EPA-rated consumption of 84 MPGe, their test vehicle cost about $1300 over its first 24,000 miles or 5.5 cents per mile.

On the other hand, only utilizing fast charging would have cost 26 cents/kWh, pushing the average cost up to just over $2500 or 10.4 cents per mile.

DC Fast Chargers get you back on the road fully juiced a lot quicker, but it may cost you more for the advantage of speed.

Again, these prices very much depend on where youre charging, the rates during the time of charge, and how much energy youre actually taking from the grid.

On average, commercial energy prices are cheaper in the US. However, Teslas Supercharger network doesnt necessarily utilize commercial rates, and certainly doesnt charge customers that low of a rate.

Like the residential numbers, we will again utilize data from the EIA for average energy costs in the US. However, to account for this upcharge present on DC Fast Chargers, we will add an additional $0.10 per kWh. As a result, we get $0.216 per kWh, so we feel safe rounding up to a cool 22 cents.

DCFCs like Tesla Superchargers snag DC power directly without having to convert it for your EVs battery, making them much more efficient compared to Level 1 and 2 charging. Charging efficiencies range from around 90% to 99%, so for our estimates, we will call it 95%.

Locating Tesla Destination Chargers

You can find Destination Charging locations on Teslas website. When you select a location, itll show you the business where youll find it as well as any additional information youll need such as the number of chargers available, the charging speed, and any details on cost or availability. Usually, hotels require you to be a guest staying overnight to get access to their Destination Charger and you may need to check with the valet or parking attendant to get access to the charger.

If you charge at home, the local cost of electricity will determine your overall charging cost. The average utility rate in the US was about 13.72 cents per kWh as of March 2022.

To calculate the home charging cost, multiply the capacity of your battery by your utility’s cost per kWh.

For example:

  • Electricity rate = $0.1372 per kWh
  • Charging cost = 75 times $0.1372 = $10.29 for a near-empty battery fill-up.

Pros & Cons Of Electric Vehicles

True Cost Of Charging A Tesla Model Y (THE REAL COST AFTER 6 MONTHS)

EVs offer many benefits over ICE vehicles, but there are some disadvantages youll want to be aware of as well. The pros of EVs include:

    • EVs are energy efficient: a higher percentage of energy used to fuel an EV is converted to usable energy.
    • EVs reduce emissions: unlike ICE vehicles, EVs dont directly release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. However, if youre not powering them with clean energy, the electricity source used to recharge them may contribute to emissions .
    • EVs have a lower cost of ownership: because EVs dont have an internal combustion engine, the maintenance costs are often considerably lower than ICE vehicles. Paired with savings compared to filling up a gas tank, its cheaper to drive an EV than a comparable ICE vehicle.

    What Is Charge Efficiency

The efficiency with which a Tesla battery is charged affects the overall cost of charging your car. The charge efficacy of a battery is the ability of a battery to take a charge. Most Tesla drivers are unaware that their Teslas battery causes significant power loss.

These losses were largely prevented by the advancement of electric vehicle charging technology, although they had an impact.

Does Tesla Still Offer Free Supercharging

Yes, but not recently. When Tesla EVs really began ramping up deliveries to customers after the debut of the Model S, many customers saw added perks like unlimited Supercharging. Over time, Tesla has incorporated similar promotions for specific models or customers who made a referral.

However, this still remains one of the most confusing potential perks for Tesla owners, old and new. We get a lot of questions, such as: How can I tell if my Tesla has free unlimited Supercharging? Does free Supercharging transfer over? and Does Tesla still offer free Supercharging?

We will have to get more granular on this in a separate post, but here are some broad strokes:

    • Since mid-2020, Tesla has made no mention of additional free unlimited Supercharging
    • Fully-transferable, free unlimited Supercharging has not been offered since 2017
    • As the newest Tesla, the Model Y has never seen any free Supercharging promotions
    • The best way to check if you or your Tesla have free unlimited Supercharging is to contact Tesla directly

Heres a breakdown of what Tesla models may still have a promotion for free unlimited supercharging. Weve also put together a more detailed guide here.

Remember to check with Tesla to confirm if your EV qualifies or not:

*Note: No Tesla models from 2021 onward have any promotions for unlimited Supercharging at this time

  • Another thing to think about is that the gas vehicle requires the gas to be hauled in to the gas stations, taking a larger toll on the roads. Many cities, counties, businesses and government agencies have solar and have charging stations that run off of that. Granted the installation of the solar panels has an impact, but once it is up an running, it does not require gas to be trucked in regularly, and the impact on the roads are far less than the gas stations out there. So while the EV owner will need to pay a share for road maintenance, the gas taxes cover only so much of their impact, including the pollution they produce.

  • The Faster The Charging The Higher The Rate

    Tesla® Charging Station Installation

Unlike a typical 240-volt Level 2 home charger system, you will find Level 3 chargers in commercial settings because theyre prohibitively expensive for a private individual to get installed at home.

Tesla uses its own dedicated Supercharger network with more than 35,000 across the globe. But the rates can vary widely depending on region, timing, the Tesla model youre charging, and the tier you choose for your recharge speeds. Tesla offers four charging tiers. One important caveat: Tesla Superchargers only work for Tesla vehicles. That is until the network opens up to other EVs in the United States. The non-Tesla Supercharger pilot began in November 2021 in Europe.

Voelcker stresses that home charging is the best option for anyone considering an electric car. Yet, equally important is knowing where to find EV perks close to home.

Some workplaces offer charging for employees cars But electric-car owners quickly learn which public stations near them are free, which charge for charging, and how much they cost, he said.

For example, a bustling parking lot in a crowded city center might lure EV owners with the promise of free electric car charging. But the resultant fee for parking there could easily zoom past what youd have paid to fill up even the thirstiest gas-powered car or truck. Still, drivers will find the network of chargers growing with plenty of free options, including at malls, hotels, grocery stores, and more.
