What you need to know before getting a Tesla Powerwall

After seeing the price of a Powerwall, you might be tempted to try a DIY Powerwall solution or find a DIY Powerwall kit online. We want to advise heavily against this option. Installing a Powerwall or other battery storage system involves the knowledge of a trained and experienced professional electrician and an electrical permit for your local jurisdiction.

Not only is it extremely dangerous to attempt this on your own, but you have to be a Certified Tesla Powerwall Installer to purchase and install Powerwalls. If you do find a Powerwall unit in a sketchy corner of the internet, it wont come with a warranty unless its purchased and installed by a Certified Installer. But if youve got your mind set on a DIY Powerwall, please make sure you get one of those In Case of Fire, Save Pets Inside stickers for your door.

What Is A Tesla Powerwall And How Much Do They Cost

If you’re looking to reduce your energy costs, Tesla’s Powerwall is an excellent option.

Tesla is primarily known for its electric vehicles, but they also make solar panels. Once installed, they can provide power for an entire home, but you’ll want a battery to store all that power. The Tesla Powerwall is the battery that stores this power and makes it readily available when required.

Utilizing solar power in a home has various advantages including being both free and better for the environment. Keeping a full battery in your home also provides a backup power source in case of outages.

So how does the Tesla Powerwall work, and how much does it cost?

The Lg Chem Battery Warranty

LG Chems warranty promises that its RESU batteries will maintain at least 60% of their initial rated energy storage capacity after 10 years OR before the battery has been used to provide 22.4 megawatt-hours of electricity.

That distinction is important, because if youre fully charging and discharging the battery daily, youll run through that amount of MWh sooner than 10 years. To spread 22.4 MWh over 10 years, youd have to ensure the batteries discharge an average of only 6.14 kilowatt-hours per day, which is 62% of their capacity.

This should be fine for most people, as daily cycling of the battery isnt necessarily the plan. Talk to a licensed installer to find out whether you should expect to use more than 6.14 kWh of battery storage per day.

The warranty doesnt include explicit protections from defects in materials and equipment, which is a fairly major oversight. The warranty implies that LG will repair or replace the battery if its found to be defective, but that doesnt meet a very high standard.

It would be better if LG explicitly guaranteed protection for faults in materials and workmanship for 10 years.

LG Chem says the RESU 10H Prime will retain 70% of rated capacity after 10 years, but other details about the number of cycles or total MWh throughput havent yet been released.

Tesla Energy Product Roll

Shortly after the acquisition announcement, Tesla announced that it would be building a new version of its Powerwall battery energy storage device and introduced the Tesla Solar Roof, a solar shingle product. Elon Musk presented the products using the homes on set on the backlot. The presentation was intended to gain investor support for the acquisition. It would later be reported that these roof tiles were not “fully working.” Members of the anti-Tesla group have cited Musk’s solar roof tile reveal as a major point of contention and an impetus for organizing.

The Solar Roof was to be made at the Giga New York factory, which opened in late August 2017 and would be operated as a joint venture with . The factory was not able to start producing the shingles in volume until March 2020 and Panasonic left the joint venture in early 2020, before it exited the solar business entirely in January 2021.

In mid-2017, several of the former SolarCity executives left the company. Chief policy officer John Wellinghoff departed in April 2017, co-founder Lyndon Rive left in June 2017, followed by his brother Peter shortly thereafter.

Tesla Powerwall Tax Credits And Incentives In 2022

The good news is there are a few ways to offset the cost of a Tesla Powerwall in 2022. One way to reduce your costs considerably is to claim the 30% Clean Energy Credit that runs through 2032. This credit could save $3,450 on your taxes when you purchase an $11,500 Tesla Powerwall. The tax credit will decrease to 26% in 2033, then 22% in 2034.

Homeowners can apply the Clean Energy Credit to the entire home solar system, including solar panels, inverters, and batteries such as the Powerwall. The Clean Energy Credit is part of the Inflation Reduction Act passed on August 16, 2022, and applies retroactively to any qualified solar purchase from January 2022.

However, the tax credit is only applicable if you purchase or finance your system, but not if you lease your solar system or enter a solar power purchase agreement . Other state and local incentives may be available in your area as well. Another aspect that can help with the cost of a solar panel system is net metering, which is a process available in some states where you can sell excess energy back to the power grid.

Tesla Powerwall Version History

There are currently three versions of the Tesla Powerwall in existence, with a fourth apparently in the works for Spring 2023.

The first version of the Powerwall was a DC battery that launched in 2015. This version has since been discontinued.

This was followed closely by the Powerwall 2 in 2016, an AC battery with more than doubled the capacity of the original version.

Early Powerwall models and competitors, such as Sonnen and LG, are DC batteries, which require a separate inverter to convert electricity to AC before it sending it to the home or grid.

For the Powerwall 2, this inverter is part of the package, streamlining the configuration by eliminating the need for the separate inverter. However, the Powerwall 2 still required a separate solar inverter in order to receive and store solar output.

The latest version is the Powerwall+. The Powerwall+ is essentially the Powerwall 2 with the addition of a built-in solar inverter. This allows the Powerwall+ to directly receive DC electricity from solar panels and eliminates the need for yet another series of solar inverters.

How Many Solar Panels Are Needed To Charge A Tesla Powerwall 2

When calculating the solar energy needed to charge a Tesla Powerwall 2, it’s the rating of the panels in your solar PV system as much as the number of panels that determine how much energy they can generate to charge the battery storage system. The ratings of your panels, when added together, give a number of kW that can feed into the Powerwall battery, but some of this electricity will also be used by your building at the same time.

For example, a fairly large residential 4 kW solar array could produce around 20 kWh of electricity on an average sunny summer day, which would be enough to fully charge a Tesla Powerwall 2 and run your home. A Powerwall can run an average home throughout spring, summer and autumn, and for even longer if your demand is low.

At times of the year with less hours of light and sunshine, the same solar array might only produce about a quarter of the kWh that it does in the summer, which usually means that you will need to use more electricity from the grid, along with your Tesla Powerwall 2.

Which Panels Will Tesla Install On Your Roof

Its unclear what size or series panel Tesla will install on your roof, they dont even provide the technical specifications of their panels directly on their site. However, based on a table found here, it seems like the standard panel Tesla is using is 400 watts in size. With that said, there are plenty of places on their website that are out of date, so honestly, you probably wont know for sure until you place an order.

Take Advantage Of Market Prices

The Powerwall 2s Advanced time-based control mode allows you to take advantage of fluctuating electricity prices. You can set your Powerwall to this mode using the Tesla Mobile App, which also allows you to keep track of your energy use. You can then minimise your electricity costs by selling power back to the grid when spot prices are very high.

Is The Tesla Powerwall Worth It

In our opinion, the Powerwall is a great battery. It has advanced features and impressive technical specs for a decent price. But is the Powerwall worth it? The actual battery is worth it – but the headache that comes along with dealing with Tesla and trying to find a Powerwall probably isnt.

Teslas decision to only sell Powerwalls with new solar panel installations makes it much harder for homeowners to get one in a reasonable time, which is a huge letdown. Because of this, homeowners who already installed solar panels cant get a Powerwall right from Tesla and instead have to search for a certified installer willing to sell a standalone Powerwall to them. Then add Teslas notoriously long wait times on top of that.

You should also keep in mind that when it comes to solar installations, Tesla is notorious for having poor after-sales service, and you run the risk of dealing with subpar customer service if you choose the company. If youve purchased your entire solar plus storage system from Tesla, thats something youll have to deal with for 25 years!

With all that being said, if you dont already have solar, are willing to risk getting poor customer service over the 25 years that you have Tesla panels on your roof, or are okay with potentially months or year-long wait times to get a battery installed, then a Tesla Powerwall is right for you.

Tesla Powerwall : A Complete 2022 Buyers Guide

The world-famous Elon Musk, CEO Tesla, announced an entry to the energy storage market in 2015 with the launch of the home battery product, the Tesla Powerwall. Perhaps more famous for their electric vehicles, Tesla Motors have been praised for their ability to make leaps and bounds in research and development. Tesla Australia has attempted to make leaps in the energy sector recently with the newer version of the Powerwall.

How Battery Energy Storage Systems Work

Exploring Tesla Powerwall and home batteries – worth it?

Grid-tied applications are the most common integration for Powerwall in Canada. It is now possible to go fully off-grid with Powerwall or to provide backup power in commercial applications.

Tesla Powerwall replicates the frequency of the electrical utility grid, called grid-forming. This feature allows solar panels to continue to operate in the event of a grid outage, contrary to the typical anti-islanding behaviour which turns solar power systems ) off in the event of an outage.

Remaining grid-tied is the most economical option if your property has an existing electrical utility connection. This is explored further below.

Grid energy and stored energy interplay with each other seamlessly and automatically. When the grid goes down, Powerwall senses the disruption and continues to provide energy.

No delays. No manual switching required.

Grid-tied Powerwall installations in Canada come in two forms whole home backup and critical loads backup.

Whole Home

As the name suggests, whole home backup provides electricity to the entire home. This option typically requires multiple Powerwalls to adequately power your home.

Powerwalls tie into your main electrical panel and all loads receive energy in the event of a grid outage.

How Tesla Powerwall Batteries Work

All batteries store DC power, and solar panels produce DC power. But home appliances use AC power. This is where inverters and rectifiers come into play.

When solar panels produce DC power, it runs through an inverter, where its converted to AC, then flows through your house. If you have a backup power system, excess energy thats not used in the home will keep flowing to charge your battery. It will need to run through a rectifier to be converted back to DC power in order to be stored in the battery.

The Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ both have an internal inverter and rectifier to convert electricity between AC and DC. The inverter in the Powerwall 2 is only for the battery, and an external inverter is required for solar panels. On the other hand, the Powerwall+ includes a solar inverter. Both models can also charge from the grid when solar panels are not producing electricity.

Heres a quick overview of how it works:

The solar energy stored in a Tesla Powerwall can be used at any time. However, there are certain times of the day when stored electricity is more valuable. For example, many electricity providers charge expensive peak tariffs after sunset, when homes tend to use more power. By pulling from your Powerwall instead of the grid at this time of the day, you can maximize your electricity savings.

Heres how that breaks down in a typical solar panel system:

Teslas Customer Service Comes Up Short

Its true that youll probably get the lowest price for going solar when you go with Tesla. But the price of solar also includes the cost of the long-term relationship that you get with your solar installer, and that seems to be where Tesla cuts costs.

Unfortunately, Tesla has historically been known for having pretty shoddy long-term customer service – which you can read about in customer reviews here on SolarReviews. Because they are such a large company, they don’t have the ability to give you the type of one-on-one service that you need when going solar.

Teslas customers have reported that its hard to get ahold of them if theres a problem with their system, and it can take even longer to get someone out to check on the issues. This can actually cause you to lose a substantial amount of money.

If your solar panels arent producing energy properly, you have less electricity to power your home, and thus a higher electric bill. The longer it takes for someone to fix your system, the more money you lose.
