Why A Million-Mile Battery Means Teslas Could Last A Lifetime

Tesla cars are expensive, but that hasn’t stopped people from lining up to buy them. One reason the price is so high is that, at the moment, demand is outstripping supply. … The other main reason for Tesla cars’ high sticker price is the very high cost of the electric battery packs that supply these vehicles with power.

Your Driving Style And Environment

Your driving behaviors and environment play a big role in achievable range. Frequent stop-and-go driving, inclement weather and uphill driving put a natural strain on the battery. To maximize range, its important to watch your driving speed and keep regenerative braking in its Standard setting, if selectable regenerative braking is equipped on your vehicle.

As you drive, be mindful of common reasons your range may decrease more rapidly:

  • High driving speeds
  • Inclement weather such as rain, snow and headwinds

How Long Does A Tesla Model X Battery Last

Data from the Model X is a few years shorter than data from the Model S, but as the battery pack is virtually the same, its safe to assume similar numbers. We already mentioned Tesloops 2015 Model X with 300,000 miles and battery capacity degradation of about 10% their experience fits in with the general Model X stats provided by Tesla owners on websites like Plug in America or Tesla Motors Club.

Teslas own data shows a 10% degradation rate over 200,000 miles for the Model X. Again, with the assumption that the average driver only travels 13,500 miles a year, thats 10% degradation over an almost 15 year period . Like the Model S, most Model X battery packs are expected to last even longer than that while maintaining a usable charge . Taking all of this information into account, a Tesla Model X battery appears to last 450,000 miles or more.

How Much Does It Cost To Buy An Electric Tesla

According to Motor Trend, the price of a Tesla car will range between $45,000 and nearly $200,000 as of June 2022. The cheapest Tesla Model 3 will cost around $48,000 as of June 20, 2022, but take your time. Its designed to carry an estimated 267 miles on its battery, according to Tesla.

Teslas, which are fully electric and drive automatically, are among the most sought-after vehicles on the market today. The autopilot capabilities of Tesla have improved over time, but they are becoming increasingly expensive. A pre-order of Full Self-Driving was $8,000 in total this price has nearly doubled. A new Tesla will set you back $3,947 per year in service. Tesla Insurance is the cheapest insurer on our list of the best. The Tesla Model 3 can travel approximately 3.75 miles per kilowatt hour when at peak speed. Electric vehicles are the best option for heavy drivers in terms of saving money.

Electricity prices vary depending on where you live, when you need it, and even at what time of day it is. If you choose time of use electricity, you may be able to lower your monthly bill even further. Some Tesla vehicles may be eligible for a $7,500 credit under the recently enacted Inflation Reduction Act.

Real World Battery Lifespan

Tesla released their first Model S in 2012, so there are now various Teslas with high mileage that give us a better idea of how long a Tesla battery will last in the real world.

Tesloop, a company that offers one-way Tesla rentals between major cities has several Teslas with high mileage. One of their vehicles racked up more than 400,000 miles, although the battery did need to be changed at 317,000 miles.

Another owner, Hansjörg Gemmingen has almost 900,000 miles on his 2013 Model S. His car has gone through two battery replacements during this time, but its a true testament to the longevity of Teslas batteries.

Keep in mind that these vehicles are 8 and 9 years old now and Tesla had only been creating cars for a few years when the vehicles were built.

Tesla has undoubtedly learned and improved their products since these early vehicles. We’d expect newer batteries to last even longer.

Not many details have been revealed about Tesla’s next-generation FSD hardware, but news out of China suggests that the new hardware will use considerably improved cameras.

One of Tesla’s suppliers appears to have produced and shipped new 5-megapixel cameras and sensors to Tesla. These new cameras will likely be used for HW4 since the current hardware probably can’t keep up with 8, 5-megapixel cameras.

Currently, Tesla uses cameras with a resolution of 1.2 megapixels, so this would be a major upgrade to the current hardware.

How Soon Should You Expect Rust On A Tesla Model S

If you live in a coastal area or somewhere that uses a lot of road salt to melt the snow and ice on the road, youve probably seen plenty of vehicles eaten away by rust.

Youll be glad to hear that the Model S uses a lot of aluminum in its chassis and body panels.

Aside from being lighter than steel, aluminum doesnt rust but can still become corroded and oxidized.

The Model S isnt completely immune to rust though. After a couple of years, you will start seeing rust form on suspension and brake components, various bolts, and other parts made out of steel.

Tesla even issued a recall in 2018 for the Model S due to excessive corrosion on the power steering bolts.

Although the Model S comes with a 12-Year Body Rust Limited Warranty, it has a lot of exceptions.

It wont cover you if the rust is caused by stone / rock chips or if youve put any rustproofing on the car.

If you want to avoid premature formation of rust on your Model S, here are a few things you can do:

  • Wash the car regularly including the underside
  • Apply paint protection such as a ceramic coating or paint protection film
  • Install mud flaps to protect the underside from road salts
  • Apply rustproofing to the underside of the vehicle
  • Keep the car garaged to protect it from the elements
  • Address chips and scratches as quickly as possible by using touchup paint

Do Different Tesla Models Have Different Batteries

Tesla battery degradation and replacement after 400,000 miles

Each Tesla model uses the different cell constructions as outlined above, but different battery sizes are also available depending on the model, with bigger batteries typically adding more range and more cost.

Battery capacity is measured in kilowatt hours , which is a measurement of how much energy is being used per hour. The standard Model 3 and Model Y get a 54kWh unit, while the Long Range and Performance versions get a 75kWh battery. Both the Model S and Model X use 100kWh batteries.

A cars power output also affects its range, though. On the Model 3 and Model Y you can buy an entry-level single-motor version that will be the least expensive model because of its smaller battery and lack of an expensive second motor.

All cars have dual-motor versions with a bigger battery. At the top of the range of the Model 3 and Model Y is the Performance, which sacrifices a little range in favour of rapid acceleration, while Long Range models dont have quite as much power but use their bigger battery to provide the longest distance between charges.

The Model S and Model X dual-motor, big battery versions act as the entry-level versions, topped by a triple-motor Plaid model that has a key focus on being very, very fast.

Only Use Superchargers When Necessary

Teslas Supercharger network is an impressive thing letting you take your Teslas battery from 10% to 80% in about 35 minutes but using it too often can have a detrimental effect on the battery.

Faster charging rates, 125kW in this case, cause higher wear on batteries, so regular plugging in at home rather than relying on public Superchargers will help battery longevity. Thats not to say avoid them entirely, they are really useful after all, but try to use them as little as often.

What Are The Components In A Tesla Motor

While the typical internal combustion engine that one will see in petrol- or diesel-powered cars has around 200 moving parts, Tesla electric vehicles only contain approximately 17 moving parts. This number means roughly 90% fewer components in Tesla motors are moving than a typical gas-powered engine.

Some electric car brands may differ from Tesla regarding what they put under their hood. However, Tesla engines and other electric engines typically consist of:

  • Power is provided to the wheels by an electric motor
  • An inverter converts the direct-current motor into a more robust and manageable alternating-current
  • A drivetrain that comes with only a single-speed transmission
  • A set of batteries get used to store the power required to move the vehicle
  • A plug/cable allows electricity to move from the batteries to the motor

Unlike gas-powered cars, Tesla electric vehicles do not use a standard transmission. An electric vehicle does not need to turn any gears, so there is no need for multiple gears. Instead, they have a special transmission only consisting of one gear.

Tesla vehicles do not need different gears because gas-powered cars cannot run at less than a certain speed. Electric cars can do this, which is why you may hear an electric vehicle produce a humming sound when idling or driving at a slow speed.

How Fast Does A Tesla Charge

Tesla charging rates depend on the type of charger you use.

You get the best Tesla charging speed with superchargers, which are available at public charging stations and capable of delivering peak charge speeds of up to 250kW. Using one of these, you could add more than 130 miles of range to a Model S in just 15 minutes, 110 miles to a Model X or 170 miles to a Model 3 in 30 minutes.

Model 3 Vs Bmw 3 Series

Electric Vehicles are the Future

Although the BMW 3 series still doesnt come in an EV variant, we cant ignore the fact that many people who are looking to buy the Model 3 would also consider a similarly priced German luxury sedan like the BMW.

After all, a lot of Tesla buyers see Model 3 as a luxury brand and want to be seen driving around in a premium vehicle. In the same way, a BMW would also fit the bill.

The 3 series is also the best selling car in its segment, which is quite a feat considering its competition from the likes of Audi, Mercedes and Lexus.

Although BMWs have a reputation for being unreliable after the warranty has expired, these are often the case for vehicles that havent been properly taken care of.

Apart from electrical niggles, you can expect a modern BMW 3 series to last between 200,000 250,000 miles / 13 17 years on the original drivetrain.

This is noticeably less than the Model 3s promised 300,000 mile longevity, but still very respectable for an internal combustion vehicle.

Teslas Car Battery Warranty

Its one thing to know how long a Tesla battery could last, and its another entirely to know how long it should last with reasonable performance. This is where warranties come in Teslas warranties cover a period of time OR mileage driven, and then guarantee that your battery will retain 70% of its starting capacity by that point. So, for the Model S, Tesla says that if your car holds less than 70% of its original battery capacity after driving it for 8 years or 150,000 miles , you are eligible for any repair or replacement necessary to correct defects in the materials or workmanship, for free.

Tesla car battery warranties by model

8 years or 120,000 miles 70%

The lowest mileage warranty available from Tesla currently is their Model 3 warranty at 100,000 miles for 8 years. For context, thats 12,500 miles a year, 240 miles a week, or 24 miles a day, which is still probably plenty for most car owners!

How To Make Your Tesla Last Longer

  • Keep the same charging routine every day
  • Avoid charging to 100%
  • Use regenerative braking whenever possible
  • Increase aerodynamics by removing roof racks and cycle racks when not in use
  • Avoid discharging your battery completely
  • Accelerate slowly to improve range and increase tire life

How Long Do Tesla Model S Batteries Last

Tesla claims the Model 3 batteries can last at least 1,500 charge cycles, and still have a lot of life left in them.

We can only assume that these newer battery technologies are also being used in newer Model S variants.

If the latest Long Range Model S can go up to 400 miles on a single charge, the batteries can theoretically deliver over 600,000 miles of driving.

Early models with their 200-plus miles of range will probably be able to last 200,000 to 300,000 miles on their original batteries.

Tesla Model S Owner Passes Incredible One Million Mile Mark But May Switch To Lucid

Hansjörg Gemmingen, the owner of what is thought to be the most-driven Tesla electric car on the planet, will on Thursday break through another remarkable milestone the one million mile mark.

But, having one through three batteries and eight motors, he says he is not happy with a decrease in motor longevity and is considering changing to a Lucid Air in the near future.

Gemmingen has travelled extensively throughout Europe since taking ownership of the demo Tesla Model S P85 in 2014, and says he has driven all but 20,000km himself to show the world that driving an electric car is feasible every climate zone.

And clearly, also not just for short trips.

Having passed a first historic milestone in late 2019 crossing the one million kilometre mark, Gemmingen has now driven more than 200,000km annually on average for the past two and a half years.

On May 27, he posted a photo of his vehicles mileage sitting at 990,000 miles .

Hansjörg von Gemmingen Hornberg May 27, 2022

He tells The Driven he has travelled through Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, England, Ireland and China.

On June 15, 2022 , he expects to pass the one million mile mark, and to have it officially recognised by the prestigious Guinness Book of Records.

All this on three batteries replaced under warranty, the last of which has done 400,000km.
