Is It Worth Converting Cars As Well
Swapping out combustion engines for electric motors is technically possible for all cars. It requires the removal of the old engine and gearbox to make way for the electric one and batteries. Engineers have to develop specific electric steering systems for each car.

The first car Herb converted was a Porsche 911 back in 2014. He caught the bug and started transforming even older cars into e-vehicles, before moving onto buses.
Converting a vintage car costs around 60,000, Herb says and points to a black Jaguar Daimler limousine from 1993.
“The customer wants to have it electric. In this case, we’ll use Tesla modules,” says Herb.
Assembly kits to install e-engines and batteries for vintage cars cost at least 10,000 and require more than 100 hours of labor. The technically minded who want to take on the project themselves can save a lot of money and pay companies like Elerra to simply advise them.But Herb says converting classic cars isn’t worth it from an economic perspective.
“Vintage cars don’t usually get driven a lot, so operational costs don’t matter as much. Converting them is more of a hobby.”
And he has a similar take on smaller normal cars. Herb says he regularly has to advise customers that buying something like a Volkswagen e-Up electric vehicle would be cheaper and better than converting an existing VW Polo.
“It doesn’t really make sense to convert a VW Polo and I have to stress that point often.”

How Much Does Electric Car Conversion Cost
The cost of a DIY electric car conversion that uses a kit of parts varies. If you want to convert a classic Mini into an EV, the Swindon Powertrain Classic Mini Kit costs from £8,850 , while other kits range from £5,000 to £35,000.

Changing Registration To Electric To Get An E
When ownership of a used vehicle is transferred in Ontario, the vehicle must pass an emissions test before plates are issued to the new owner. After that, it must be re-tested every other year.
Since conversions are rare, you can be pretty sure that no one at the licence bureau will know what to do when you walk in with your fresh safety certificate and insurance slip in hand, looking for your e-test exemption and your new plates.
Anticipating this, I called ahead. Three times. And got 3 different answers about what I needed to do, the most plausible-sounding one of which was: “bring a letter signed by your mechanic, which says the vehicle no longer has an internal combustion engine.”
Again, Billings Automotive to the rescue. Dean wrote up a letter.
Turns out even that was not needed. When I showed up with all the required documents, the bureau employee looked in the “help” section of their computer system for instructions about changing fuel types on the registration, and it simply said they could change it at the owner’s request.
I definitely recommend calling ahead anyway, asking what they require, and taking the person’s name so you have someone to refer to should things go sideways. But apparently, anyone can walk into the licence bureau and state that their vehicle has been converted to electric power, and Bob’s your uncle! No more emissions tests. Better not let that get out…

Combined with the increased availability of kits, Sharpe sees that this will be a major factor in driving people towards EV conversions in just the next couple of years: My expectation is that were going to get about 150-200 mile range for around 5,000 including parts and labour. Very few people would bother with a 500-mile battery if weve got good rapid charging facilities everywhere, as a battery that big just isnt affordable and you dont need that level of range particularly in Ireland.

Next, you should remove anything that wont be necessary after youre done with the conversionthis includes the engine, gas tank, exhaust, radiator, and fuel lines.

Getting Insurance For A Conversion
If you’ve tried calling around for quotes for a conversion, you’ve already discovered that insurance companies recoil violently from the word “modified” when it comes to cars.
You’ve probably been flatly refused several times. We have the fast and furious crowd to blame for this: for hopping up their rides and then driving like idiots, crashing at high speed into orphanages and busses full of nuns and whatnot.
One EV owner I know says it’s just a matter of the language you use when inquiring. Never say the word “modified.” Say, “converted to alternative fuel… like a propane conversion.”
“What alternative fuel?”
“Oh – electricity.”
I had zero luck cold-calling different companies in the yellow pages. I only got results after finding a broker who seemed genuinely interested in helping. The broker’s fee probably means the policy probably costs a bit more in the end, but it was worth it.
FYI, we simplified our approach by only asking for liability coverage we had no interest in sorting out the value of the car, post-conversion.
As for specific companies: TD Melloche Monnex will insure a converted EV in Ontario. They may require that the vehicle is inspected by an electric vehicle specialist before issuing a policy. In Ottawa/eastern Ontario, REV Consultants is such a specialist.
So Should You Get An Ac Or Dc Conversion Kit
Answer: it doesn’t matter anymore, really. You can get either one, and they’re both equally good in a car, both simple to use and install. The AC electric car conversion kit costs about a thousand dollars more than the DC, so not a lot of difference there. I still like AC better, but they both have their virtues.
