Range anxiety is a serious problem for electric cars. The battery technology in mainstream EVs from the likes of Peugeot, Volkswagen and Hyundai isnt quite good enough to compete with the range and refuelling times of a petrol or diesel-powered car and the fears of short driving ranges and long charge times are strong enough to keep drivers in their fossil fuel-burning motors.
The UKs piecemeal charging infrastructure doesnt instil much confidence in electric vehicles, either. As of April 2022, we had around 30,000 charging points in the UK but theyre struggling to cope with the 750,000 EVs already on the road. And the issue is only going to worsen, as the SMMT estimates that well have almost seven million zero-emission vehicles on our roads by 2030.
However, corporations are working on the public charging network and manufacturers are slowly figuring out how to get more miles from an EV. Now, the best electric cars can cover more than 400 miles on a charge, representing a huge leap forward in battery and motor technology. Sadly, these improvements are still limited to the upper echelons of the car market, leaving less affluent buyers to either settle for a reasonably priced lower-range electric car or stick with combustion power.
Polestar 2 Single Motor
The Polestar 2 is a performance car with a design that emphasizes driving feel, handling, and acceleration over sheer range. However, the Polestar 2s base price is relatively low for the maximum range it has$49,800 for 270 miles of range and a beautiful car to boot.
The Polestar 2 is available in a single-motor trim thats both the cheapest option and, surprisingly, the highest-range one for 270 miles at $49,800. The next trim up is the Dual Motor trim which costs $53,300.
Obviously, the single-motor trim is the way to go if youre just after cheap range, but the Dual Motor trim is worthwhile if youre buying the Polestar for its sports car qualities. The extra motor gives the car an extra punch and quicker acceleration.
Theres also a super limited-run BST edition trim which is for those with money to spend who are looking for what amounts to an electric luxury sports car.

Whether range anxiety is real or not, the distance an electric car can travel on a full battery remains one of the key factors to consider when buying an electric car.
The good news is that the range of electric cars has increased dramatically in recent years, making them practical transport for all types of journey especially if you can charge at home. But which EVs will go furthest on a charge?
To find out, we’ve delved through the spec sheets to unearth the 10 electric cars on sale in the UK with the longest range. We’ve used the official Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure figures, a rigorous emissions and efficiency test. While far more reliable than previous tests, the WLTP figures still tend to be a bit higher than the mileage you’ll achieve in the real world, but they do provide a good, consistent guide.
So what are the ten cars with the longest range? Let’s find out.
1. Mercedes EQS 450+ AMG Line – 453 miles
The Mercedes-Benz EQS is the German brand’s luxury electric car and, in 450+ AMG Line trim, delivers a whopping 453 miles of range between charges. Packed full of tech and offering excellent comfort throughout the EQS is a commendable EV that is also excellent to drive.
2. Tesla Model S Dual Motor All Wheel Drive – 405 miles
It’s also worth noting that the Model S is currently being updated, with new versions including the much-anticipated Plaid model on the way. That could stretch its range still further.

Skoda Enyaq Iv 330 Miles
The Skoda Enyaq is an electric car that really could suit almost everyone. Why? Well, itâs big and roomy inside, so it easily has the family side of life sorted. Itâs enormous in the back, like a limousine with a lofty viewpoint, and the bootâs almost big enough to sleep in.
Itâs good to drive, too, with a range of powertrains that offer perfectly acceptable performance and an ability to recharge at a reasonably brisk rate.
Itâll be the 80 model that you need if you regularly travel a decent distance, because a claimed range of 330 miles means youâre likely to need a comfort stop long before the Enyaq runs out of electricity â even with a real-world reduction in the car’s mileage.

Tesla Model X: 348 Miles
Completing the hat-trick for Tesla is the Model X, which deserves plaudits for making this list despite its 2,500kg kerb weight. Underneath it shares a platform and motors with the Model S saloon, and its available in like-for-like configuration, too: the entry-level dual motor, AWD variant, good for up to 348 miles, or the top-spec Plaid, equipped with three motors, 1,006bhp, and slightly reduced range of up to 333 miles. But should you fall short, theres always Teslas superb Supercharger network for a quick juice.
Tesla Model : 358 Miles
Tesla’s Model 3 has been on sale since 2017, but it hasn’t gotten stale yet. Even with price hikes over the years, the $58,000 Model 3 Long Range provides some of the best bang for your buck when it comes to driving range.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 300 Miles
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 certainly grabs the attention, doesnât it? It looks like nothing else, with its large square-ish shape and âpixelatedâ lighting signature. Best of all, itâs a cracking electric option.
The rear-wheel drive single-motor option with the 73kWh battery is the perfect choice if you regularly undertake longer journeys, because it has a claimed range of 300 miles.
Better still, it can be charged at a rate of 350kW, so you wonât be stationary for too long, even if you knock a few miles off that official stat.
The interior is large and dominated by a twin-screen dashboard that manages to look both retro and cutting-edge at the same time. Thereâs loads of space, too.
Ioniq? It could end up being iconic.
Tesla Model S : 405 Miles
Tesla’s longest-running offering has represented the pinnacle of EV technology since its introduction in 2012. And even today, the $105,000 luxury sedan provides significantly more driving range than all rivals except for one.
Not only that, the $136,000 Model S Plaid is one of the more outrageous cars you can buy today, promising to hit 60 mph in 2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 200 mph.

Mercedes Eqs 450+ Amg Line: 453 Miles
Yeah, you could travel the 332 miles from London to Edinburgh by train, but youd also have to share that train with *gasp* the general public. And no one needs that stress in their life. Instead, why not relax in Mercedes electric limo, the EQS, which the German manufacturer claims will manage up to 453 miles in its most efficient configuration? Honorary Mentions: Tesla Roadster And Tesla Cybertruck
Two electric cars we havent mentioned here come from none other than Tesla, which has already proven itself to offer some of the most consistently high range among electric carmakers. From what weve heard so far the second generation Tesla Roadster and the tri-motor Cybertruck are set to continue that trend.
Back before the original Cybertruck delays, Tesla claimed that the tri-motor Cybertruck variant would offer over 500 miles of range on a single charge. An impressive achievement for any car, let alone a bulky truck that doesnt look particularly aerodynamic. The Roadster is set to have it beat, however, with Tesla still advertising that the car will have 620 miles of range per charge which would put even the Lucid Air to shame.
Unfortunately, the status of both cars isnt exactly clear. CEO Elon Musk has announced both cars will go into production next year, but that could change. After all, the two have already been delayed multiple times, and theres no guarantee it wont happen again.
Likewise Musk has been very vocal about his opposition to extreme range estimates, claiming anything over 400 miles is pointless especially since youd need to stop and charge long before then anyway. After the cancellation of the Model S Plaid Plus, which promised to have 520 miles of range, because the regular Plaid is more than good enough, theres no telling what could happen to these lofty range estimates between now and launch.

The chaos of upheaval can create opportunity. Take the dawning EV revolution, which has already seen a startup car company rocket past century-old competitors to become the most valuable automaker on earth. In the latest upset, a Korean brand best known for low prices, long warranties, and liberal financing has created a machine with performance that rivals the most revered Germans.
In nomenclature, the difference between the Kia EV6 GT and the lesser EV6 GT-Line models is slight. That Kia denotes the top-performing version of its mid-size EV by reducing rather than adding to the nameplate is something of an undersell, but the GT’s hardware shows the intensity of this effort.

The headline achievement is the powertrain. Other dual-motor, all-wheel-drive EV6 models serve up 320 total horsepower the GT, presumably after downing a can of spinach, is bursting with 576 horses. A new GT mode affords access to the entire thundering herd. Normal and Sport modes limit output to 460 horsepower, and Eco cuts it to 288. The full hit of torque, which has climbed from 446 pound-feet in the all-wheel-drive GT-Line to 545, is always available.

Rivian R1s: 316 Miles
Rivian’s R1S SUV is a bit lighter and more aerodynamic than its pickup sibling, earning a slightly better range rating from the feds.
The startup plans to start delivering the three-row SUV to patiently waiting customers later this summer. It starts at $84,500.
But beware: Rivian is slowly making its way through thousands of preorders, so availability will be slim for quite a while.
Tesla Model X Long Range 360 Miles
Yup, itâs that pesky Tesla brand again, but you canât deny that the firm’s certainly got its act together when it comes to making electric vehicles that can travel a long way.
The Model X is the brand’s largest SUV and it has performance that makes many supercars look a bit tardy. Itâll cover the 0-60mph dash in a claimed 3.8 seconds and go on to a top speed of 155mph.
As exciting as all of that is, it wonât be what your neighbours talk about â it’ll be the first time you pull up at home and open the âfalcon-wingâ rear doors, which lift up DeLorean-style on electric motors.
You can show it off far from home, too, with a claimed 360-mile range and access to that Tesla Supercharger network.

Skoda Enyaq Iv: 333 Miles
Along with the Volkswagen ID.3, the Skoda Enyaq iV is an indication that 300+ miles of range is becoming more affordable.
When equipped with the larger 82kWh battery, Skodas first all-electric car can achieve 333 miles of WLTP range for a £40,000 price tag.
Even the cheaper 62kWh version could achieve 253 miles from a full charge, for £35,000.
/10 Chevrolet Bolt Euv
The Chevy Bolt EUV runs on the same setup as the Bolt EV, but it is 90-lbs heavier and offers 12 fewer miles in range. However, it makes up for those negligible shortcomings with technology and features like GM’s SuperCruise driver assistance feature. In fact, this is the first time that GM has offered the SuperCruise feature on a Chevy.
A panoramic sunroof makes the Bolt EUV a lot roomier than the Bolt EV as well. Starting at $33,500, the Chevy Bolt EUV is not eligible for the federal tax credit, but the price tag is still one of the most value-for-money propositions in the market. Plus, Chevy is running cash allowance offers by themselves to the tune of up to $6,300 for the Bolt EUV. With 247 miles of range, the Bolt EUV will never make you complain about lack of juice or range during your work week.

Lucid Air Dream Edition Range: 520 Miles
Lucid Motors, a California EV startup, has destroyed the competition to nab the title of longest-range electric car in the US.
Its debut vehicle, the $169,000 Air Dream Edition Range, earns an EPA-estimated range of 520 miles, well over 100 miles more than the Tesla Model S. Range ratings don’t always hold up in real-world conditions, but multipleoutlets have verified that the Air can indeed cover at least 500 miles.
Lucid plans to sell a base model someday called the Air Pure. It expects that car will have 406 miles of range just one mile more than the Model S. But who’s counting?
Why We Picked It
Move over Tesla: The new Lucid, and its multiple models, have seized the top six spots in driving range on the EPAs list. That includes the record-setting 520 miles of the Air Dream version. Its a testament to Lucids focus on efficiency, resulting in a class-best 131 MPGe for the most frugal version and 111 MPGe even for the 1,111-horsepower Air Dream Performance. The Grand Touring can return 516 miles and the Touring 406, but beware, fitting the larger 21-inch wheels on any Air reduces the range by 40 miles or more.
Charging is just as efficient for the 113 kWh battery. The Lucids industry-best 900-volt architecture is key to adding a remarkable 300 miles of range in just 20 minutes, albeit on the powerful 350-kilowatt fast chargers.
