Chevrolet Bolt Ev Crossover / Euv

Your NEW Electric Car Choices in 2021 | Tesla Rivals

Another Chevy! Set to be built at GMs Orion Assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan, the Chevrolet Bolt EV Crossover is benefiting from a $160 million upgrade for Bolt production. This EV SUV will be taller and roomier than a regular Bolt and offers GMs Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system. Connectivity to Super Cruise is included free of charge for three years if you purchase the Premier trim, after which a paid plan is required.

The current Bolt EV gets 259 miles on a charge, and the Chevy EUV is estimated to get 250 miles range, which is pretty good for an SUV, if not as good as the BMW iX is expected to get.

The better news though is that the Chevy Bolt EUV is priced at $33,000 to start, which is far lower than a BMW!

American Recovery And Reinvestment Act

President Barack Obama pledged US$2.4 billion in federal grants to support the development of next-generation electric vehicles and batteries. $1.5 billion in grants to U.S. based manufacturers to produce highly efficient batteries and their components up to $500 million in grants to U.S. based manufacturers to produce other components needed for electric vehicles, such as electric motors and other components and up to $400 million to demonstrate and evaluate plug-in hybrids and other electric infrastructure conceptslike truck stop charging station, electric rail, and training for technicians to build and repair electric vehicles .

In March 2009, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the U.S. Department of Energy announced the release of two competitive solicitations for up to $2 billion in federal funding for competitively awarded cost-shared agreements for manufacturing of advanced batteries and related drive components as well as up to $400 million for transportation electrification demonstration and deployment projects. This initiative aimed to help meet President Barack Obama‘s goal of putting one million plug-in electric vehicles on the road by 2015.

Electric vehicle purchases made in the U.S. are eligible for $2,500 to $7,500, depending on the make and model of the vehicle, in federal tax credit.

All The Models Currently Available Sorted From The Most Affordable To The Most Expensive

A few months have passed since we last checked the all-electric car prices in the U.S. With many new models on the list, let’s take a look at the prices as of February 7, 2021.

Before we start, let’s remember that, as always, we will focus on the effective price, which is the MSRP plus destination charge , minus the eligible federal tax credit. It’s just a starting point because in many cases customers can count on additional incentives and rebates/discounts.

We are including the federal tax credit, because it affects the entire market , even if someone has no eligibility to get it. None of the Tesla and Chevrolet models are eligible for any federal tax credit.

The EPA range values are shown just for a brief comparison as they might include expected/estimated values .

The list includes the latest BEVs, including Audi Q4 e-tron, BMW i4, BMW iX, Cadillac Lyriq, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ford F-150 Lightning, Kia EV6, Mercedes-Benz EQS, Nissan Ariya.

There Are Three Categories Of Electric

The Department of Energy defines electric-drive vehicles as those that use electricity as their primary power source or to improve the efficiency of conventional vehicle designs. Within this definition, electric-drive vehicles fall into three main categories, as defined by the DOE:

  • Hybrid electric vehicles are powered by a traditional gasoline or diesel internal combustion system and by an electric motor that uses energy stored in a battery. The battery is charged by the ICE and through regenerative braking. The electric motor provides extra power during starts and acceleration, allowing for a smaller engine. This results in better fuel economy without sacrificing performance.
  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are similar to HEVs but have a larger battery that allows it to travel on electricity alone. The battery can be charged by plugging into an electric power source, through regenerative braking, and by the ICE. They can be fueled solely with gasoline, like a conventional HEV. However, they will not achieve maximum fuel economy or take full advantage of their all-electric capabilities without plugging in.
  • All-electric vehicles run on electricity alone. They are powered by an electric motor that uses energy stored in a battery . EV batteries are charged by plugging the vehicle into an electric power source and through regenerative braking.

Us Electric Car Sales Jumped To An Impressive Record High Last Quarter

Electric car sales in the United States jumped to a record high of over 200,000 vehicles during the last quarter .

Its a good sign, but the US EV market is still extremely reliant on Tesla and California.

The United States is trailing far behind Europe and China when it comes to electrifying its passenger car market. There are many factors at play, including weaker incentives and a preference for pickup trucks, which is a segment that is just now being electrified.

But, we are starting to see a significant increase in EV adoption over the last year, and this last quarter was particularly important for EV adoption in the United States.

Using data from the California Energy Commission and the California Air Resources Board , Veloz published a new report on EV sales in the United States that shows a record number of electric vehicles delivered in the country during Q1 2022.

The increase in gas prices and a big Super Bowl EV ad push seem to have helped push deliveries to a record high last quarter.

While this is a good sign for EV adoption in the United States, the market is still highly dependent on California buying electric vehicle.

Veloz reports that EV sales jumped 29% last quarter to 81,292 EVs:

Californias EV market continues to grow! This was the states strongest quarter for EV sales to date. With 81,292 electric vehicles sold this quarter, EV sales are 29% higher than last quarter. Q1 of 2022 surpassed Q1 of 2021 numbers by over 20,000 vehicles.

What Electric Cars Are On The Market

Every major car company is actively looking at expanding their electric offering. There are over a dozen electric vehicle models now for sale. So as range is getting longer, they’re becoming more affordable, and charging networks are growing throughout the country â EVs are really become a viable option for many. Read on for more in-depth results from our testing on the best electric vehicles on the market.

Why Are Ev Sales Slower In The Us

While buyer education and charging infrastructure obstruct EV adoption, car dealerships represent a key obstacle to EV sales. This is, in part, due to EV superiority.

Electric vehicles are cheaper to maintain than traditional gas-powered cars. However, maintenance and parts represent more annual profits for dealers than new car sales. This de-incentivizes dealers from selling EVs.

Despite statements from the National Automobile Dealers Association saying that dealers are all in on electric vehicles, to date they have dragged their feet in promoting electric vehicles and upheld legal roadblocks to EV sales.

In many states, long-standing laws prevent auto manufacturers from selling vehicles directly to customers, which would require EV startups to establish expensive dealerships in every statea barrier to entry into the market.

Only 22 states allow direct sales, while 11 others make an exception for Tesla, which had to negotiate with these states individually. In states with laws prohibiting direct sales, dealers have fought hard to keep them on the books.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles Have Been On The Market Longer Than Plug

Tesla car by Dylan Calluy Unsplash

The Honda Insight was the first hybrid electric vehicle available, coming on the market in 1999 with just 17 sales. Hybrid electric sales peaked in 2013 when almost 500,000 vehicles sold, accounting for 3.2% of the light-duty vehicle market in that year. Sales dipped in recent years, and the 400,000 sold in 2019 accounted for just 2.3% of new light-duty vehicle sales.

Of the 32 hybrid electric models available in 2019, the Toyota RAV4, Ford Fusion, and Toyota Prius were the most popular. Each had between 47,000 and 92,000 sales or between 12% and 23% of all hybrid electric sales.

Just under 5.4 million hybrid electric cars have sold in the United States as of 2019 comprising 1.6% of all 333 million new light-duty vehicle sales between 1999 and 2019.

Q2 202: Tesla Loses Market Share But Continues To Dominate Sales

As the chip crisis continues, legacy automakers have been hit the hardest. Teslas vertically-integrated manufacturing and supply chain strategy has proven to be a major strength. Despite numerous new entrants into the electric vehicle market, Tesla retains a 66% market share among fully-electric sales in the United States. Thats a 9% drop since last quarter, but Tesla remains far ahead. Tesla market share is expected to continue to drop with more competition, but sales will rise.

So Is There Anything I Should Consider When Buying An Electric Car

Most Affordable Small Electric Cars You Can Buy (Price as low as $4500)

There is still limited public infrastructure for charging. So while public charging stations are becoming more and more common, particularly in and around urban areas, it’s ideal to have a charging station at home.

The good news is that all EVs can be charged using the standard Level 2 chargers â even Tesla’s with an adapter. There are a few go-to apps like PlugShare for finding nearby charging stations. In the US there are over 22,000 public stations. For faster charging, you’ll want a DC fast charger â and unfortunately they are rarer in the US.

Also keep in mind charging takes longer than fueling up with a tank of gas. That’s another reason for having a charging station installed in your home!
