Installing Charging Equipment In Your Home

EV owners may install Level 2 charging equipment in their homes for a faster charge, or opt for the Level 1 cordset provided with the vehicle as shown here.

Many EV owners are able to meet their daily driving range requirements by charging overnight with Level 1 equipment, requiring no additional cost or installation, provided that a power outlet on a dedicated branch circuit is available near their parking location. Level 2 charging equipment can be installed for drivers with less regular schedules, longer commutes, or EVs with large batteries that require more than overnight to fully charge. State and utility incentives may be available to help offset the cost of charging equipment.

Most Level 2 products have standard safety features and status lights. More advanced, “smart” Level 2 products have features such as data collection, user interface systems, enhanced displays, charging timers, communications capabilities, and keypads. Purchasing safety-certified equipment is recommended, such as the products certified under the ENERGY STAR label, which are tested by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, along with having a certified electrical contractor.

Electricians can inform homeowners whether their home has adequate electrical capacity for vehicle charging. Some homes might have insufficient electric capacity for Level 2 equipment. However, a qualified electrician can add circuits to accommodate the capacity needed for Level 2 charging.

How Much Is The Congestion Charge

As of April 2019, electric vehicles are eligible for an exemption form both the London Congestion Charge and the Ultra Low Emission Zone charge.

In order to qualify for these exemptions, drivers will need to register their electric vehicle with Transport for London at a cost of £10, which needs to be renewed each year.

The Congestion Charge zone runs every day, between 07:00-22:00 . Unregistered vehicles will need to pay £15 each day you drive within the boundary.

The Ultra Low Emission Zone, by contrast, runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week , within the same area of central London as the Congestion Charge. Most vehicles that aren’t registered will have to pay £12.50 per day. Although heavier vehicles, such as lorries, may need to pay up to £100 per day.

That means a typical daily charge for an unregistered car to drive in London is £24 per day. Register an electric vehicle today to avoid paying more than you have to.

Which Is Cheaper To Own

So, by our calculations this makes the electric F-150 $2664 cheaper to own and operate over the first three years than its gas counterpartand thats without the tax credit. With it, its a substantial $10,164 less. The Kona Electric, on the other hand, is more costly than the gas version by $2041 without the tax credit, but $5459 cheaper with it. There can also be state and local incentives for EVs to factor in if those are available. Plus, as the years progress the lower costs of operating an electric vehicle continue to accrue.

The current hitch is that not all new EVs are eligible for the $7500 incentive. As it stands, despite manufacturers plans to manufacture EV batteries in the U.S., the vast majority of batteries out there do not meet all the requirements listed in the Inflation Reduction Act. In fact, many vehicles will not be eligible at all, because their battery includes materials from China, which controls 76 percent of global lithium-ion battery production capacity as of 2020 and is likely considered one of the bills foreign entities of concern.
