Are Electric Vehicles Definitely Better For The Climate Than Gas

Yes: although electric cars’ batteries make them more carbon-intensive to manufacture than gas cars, they more than make up for it by driving much cleaner under nearly any conditions.

Although many fully electric vehicles carry zero emissions badges, this claim is not quite true. Battery-electric cars may not emit greenhouse gases from their tailpipes, but some emissions are created in the process of building and charging the vehicles. Nevertheless, says Sergey Paltsev, Deputy Director of the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change, electric vehicles are clearly a lower-emissions option than cars with internal combustion engines. Over the course of their driving lifetimes, EVs will create fewer carbon emissions than gasoline-burning cars under nearly any conditions.

We shouldn’t claim victory that with this switch to electric cars, problem solved, we are going to have zero emissions, he says. No, that’s not the case. But electric cars are actually much, much better in terms of the impact on the climate in comparison to internal combustion vehicles. And in time, that comparative advantage of electric cars is going to grow.

Once we decarbonize the electric gridonce we get more and more clean sources to the gridthe comparison is getting better and better, Paltsev says.

Filling Up On Petrol Is Still 80% More Expensive Than Recharging An Ev

A T& E analysis of household electricity prices in EU capitals and weekly petrol and diesel prices shows that driving 100 km with an average electric car in September 2022 cost about 6.50 if the car was charged at home.

Driving the same distance with a petrol car was on average 80 per cent more expensive and, with a diesel, 50 per cent more expensive.

But this doesnt play out equally in all countries.

In Italy and Germany, where electricity prices are among the highest in Europe due to their heavy reliance on gas the differences are only marginal at the moment, at least for diesel compared to electricity.

Meanwhile, drivers can save up to 117 per cent by recharging instead of refuelling in Spain, and a staggering 170 per cent by plugging in instead of filling up in Poland.

While our analysis is based on the average electricity price in each city, it is important to remember that electric cars are mostly charged during off-peak hours at night. Hence, it is cheaper for the many consumers who have a different day/night electricity rate.

Policies Needed For Societal Change

Experts agree that a transition from gasoline-powered cars to EVs is not a panacea for the global fight against climate change.

It needs to go hand-in-hand with societal change that promotes greater use of public transportation and alternative modes of travel, including bicycles and walking.

Reducing the use of private vehicles requires plenty of funding and policy planning.

MIT’s Paltsev, who is also deputy director at the university’s joint program on the science and policy of global change, explained that there are currently about 1.2 billion fuel-powered cars on the road globally that number is expected to increase to between 1.8 billion to 2 billion.

In comparison, there are only about 10 million electric vehicles currently.

Global Energy Prices: Natural Gas

Eight of the 10 highest natural gas prices globally fall in Europe, with the Netherlands at the top. Overall, European natural gas prices have spiked sixfold in a year since the invasion of Ukraine.

Batteries Are The Biggest Emitter

EVs rely on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to run. The process of making those batteries from using mining raw materials like cobalt and lithium, to production in gigafactories and transportation is energy-intensive, and one of the biggest sources of carbon emissions from EVs today, experts said.

Gigafactories are facilities that produce EV batteries on a large scale.

“Producing electric vehicles leads to significantly more emissions than producing petrol cars. Depending on the country of production, that’s between 30% to 40% extra in production emissions, which is mostly from the battery production,” said Florian Knobloch, a fellow at the Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance.

Those higher production emission numbers are seen as “an initial investment, which pays off rather quickly due to the reduced lifetime emissions.”

China currently dominates battery production, with 93 gigafactories producing lithium-ion battery cells versus only four in the U.S., the Washington Post reported this year.

“I think the battery is the most complicated component in the EV, and has the most complex supply chain,” George Crabtree, director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Joint Center for Energy Storage Research, told CNBC, adding that the energy source used in battery production makes a huge difference on the carbon footprint for EVs.

But that’s changing, he said, as “people have realized that’s a huge carbon footprint.”

While charging your EV will never be as fast as filling your tank at the gas station, there are many different options to recharge your EV which vary in speed and affordability. Well explore the main EV charging options below.

Level 1 charging

This is the 120 V AC power cord that comes with your car. This method is by far the slowest, providing roughly 3 miles of range per hour of charging. We dont recommend relying on Level 1 charging.

Level 2 charging

The Level 2 chargers run off a 240 V connection – just like a washer or dryer – and require an electrician to install in your home. Depending on the model of electric vehicle, this usually costs between $550 to $2,000.

Depending on the Model of car and adapter on the charger, you can expect between 14 and 35 miles of range per hour of charging.

Installing a Level 2 charger if youve purchased an EV is highly recommended.

Level 3 charging

Level 3 charging can provide over 100 miles of range per hour of charging. Unfortunately Level 3 chargers are only available at public charging stations.

Level 3 chargers are also substantially more expensive costing between $0.28 and $0.69 per kWh. This makes sense, otherwise it wouldnt be economical for the stations to operate.

It also isnt recommended to rely on fast chargers since they are known to damage EV batteries over time. Fast chargers are best for road trips, not everyday use.
