For new vehicles, the manufacturers suggested retail price, or MSRP, must be below $55,000 for sedans and below $80,000 for vans, trucks and SUVs to be eligible for the credit.
If you want to buy a very expensive, fancy car, you probably dont need the government to help you, Tal said.
Likewise, the buyer must have a modified adjusted gross income less than or equal to $150,000 for single filers, $300,000 for married couples filing jointly and $225,000 for those filing as head of household.

Potential programs under the initiative include those involving innovative financing, car sharing, charging infrastructure in multi-unit dwellings located in disadvantaged communities, public transit, and agricultural vanpool programs. The funding plan must be updated at least every three years through January 1, 2023.

How Much Is The Electric Vehicle Tax Credit For A 2021 Tesla
The Clean Energy Act for America would benefit Tesla by allowing most Tesla vehicles to qualify for an $8,000 or $10,000 refundable EV, electric vehicle tax credit while discouraging Chinese EVs from entering the US market.
Tesla, on the other hand, does not utilize unionized workers. Therefore it would be ineligible for the extra $2,500 or $4,500 credit that corporations like Ford and GM would get.

Vehicles that fall into this category must have been purchased between 2012 and 2013, but the owners must have started using the vehicle in the year that the EV tax credit was claimed. What If I Purchased A Credit
If you purchased an eligible EV or PHEV prior to August 16, 2022, the tax credit should still be valid on your 2023 income taxes even if that vehicle is no longer on the approved vehicle list. Even if you have a written binding sales contract prior to August 16 but take delivery of the vehicle in 2023, the older rules of the tax credit should still apply.
This federal incentive has often been referred to as a flat $7,500 credit, but it’s only worth $7,500 to someone whose tax bill at the end of the year is $7,500 or more. Let’s say you owe $4,000 in income tax that’s all the tax credit will be. Uncle Sam’s not writing a refund check for the other $3,500. And an unused portion of the credit can’t be applied against the following year’s taxes. This is because the electric vehicle tax credit is nonrefundable. It can bring your federal tax bill to zero, but it will not stack on to a potential tax refund.
If you are leasing the EV, the tax credit goes to the manufacturer that’s offering the lease, not you. The carmaker will likely factor the credit into the cost of the lease to lower your monthly payment, but this isn’t mandatory.
The previous credits were also based on the electric vehicle’s battery size. Most electric vehicles qualified for the full $7,500, but for some plug-in hybrid models, the credit amount could fall well below the maximum credit. For example, the Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid only qualified for a $4,502 tax credit.

California Has An Electric Car Rebate Problem
Many car shoppers are aware that the federal government provides a tax rebate of up to $7,500 on the purchase of a new electric car. Fewer know that many states will also help you buy a new electric vehicle .
But many states do exactly that. Alabama offers lower electricity rates for EV owners. Washington offers sales tax breaks and assistance with installing a home charger. And many states between them offer everything from reduced electric bills to cash in the mail.
California is the most aggressive state in helping its residents go electric. On paper. But those rebates are proving hard to get.

How Much Are Electric Vehicle Tax Credits
All-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles bought new in or after 2010 may be eligible for a $7,500 federal income tax credit. The amount of the credit will vary depending on the capacity of the battery used to power the car.State and municipal tax breaks may also be available.
If you purchased a Nissan Leaf and your tax bill was $5,000, thats all you get at the end of the year. Youre not going to get the other $2,500 as part of a refund. Furthermore, if part of the credit is unused, you cant carry it over to the following year.
This credit only applies to purchases of a vehicle. If you happen to lease the vehicle, the manufacturer gets to take advantage of the tax credit instead. Some manufacturers will lower your monthly payment to take the credit into account, but theyre not obligated to do this.
The size of the battery in the car is one of the most essential criteria in determining how beneficial it is to claim the electric car credit. For example, the Toyota Prius Prime has a smaller battery, and its a hybrid, so you can only get a maximum of $4,502 from purchasing this vehicle.

Current And Future Vehicle Marketplace
Theres no doubt that zero-emission vehicles are gaining popularity worldwide as nations try to wean themselves off fossil fuels. But as of 2020, sales of battery, plug-in hybrid, and fuel-cell electric vehicles still tallied just 2.2 percent of new car sales, according to research firm IHS Markit. So the shift will take some time.
But by 2050, experts from IHS Markit predict that 60 to 80 percent of new car sales will be electric. Innovation in battery technology and increased manufacturing scale are critical factors in the projected growth.
General Motors recently announced that it would sell only zero-emission vehicles by 2035.
IHS also said that while the majority of new sales in 2050 will be electric vehicles, about two-thirds of the estimated 1.9 billion vehicles on the road at that time will still be gasoline-powered.
So if you want to be on the cutting edge of green technology, and youre intrigued by the savings you could rack up on your next car purchase, consider a zero-emission vehicle. It could be a good move for the environment and your wallet.
