Shelby Cobra Goes Electric With Superformance Mkiii E Replica
Superformance, the noted sports car and replicar builder, is launching an electric replica of the iconic Cobra sports car.
In late October, the company released a teaser video of an all-electric Cobradubbed MKIII E.
Details and a launch timeline weren’t revealed, but Superformance isn’t the first company to announce an electric Cobra.
AC Cars, the British automaker behind the Ace sports car that formed the basis for the original Cobra, has announced two all-electric models. The Series 1 Electric is based on the standard Cobra roadster and makes 308 horsepower, while a limited run of replicas based on AC’s 1963 24 Hours of Le Mans factory race cars will boast 617 hp.

The stratospheric values of original Cobras have created a large market for replicas, usually powered by V-8 engines like the genuine articles. Now it seems replica builders are catching on to the trend of electric classic cars.
Automakers like Jaguar and Volkswagen have dabbled in electric conversions of classic cars, and some specialist shops will install a modern electric powertrain in an older car as part of a restoration.
In The Netherlands, Voitures Extravert specializes in vintage Porsche 911 conversions, while United Kingdom-based Lunaz has shown electric-powered versions of several British classics, including a 1953 Jaguar XK120, 1961 Bentley S3 Continental Flying Spur, and a 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom.

AC Cars, one of the oldest independent automakers out of the UK, is on the verge of delivering the first electric version of its classic Series 1 Cobra to customers. The AC Cobra was a legendary two-seater sports car in the 1960s that has found new life with an electric powertrain. In a recent press release from the automaker, the electric version of its Series 1 Cobra is undergoing final development, and will be delivering to its first customers soon.
After facing delays due to supply chain issues, the AC Cars engineering team was able to integrate higher-performance parts in the electric Cobra, improving specs such as weight, handling, and acceleration. Per the release:
The shift from petrol engines to electric motors almost 60 years later will be just as significant as the original epiphany, allowing the famous British name to sell highly desirable high-performance cars that are fit for the future.
Specs on the upcoming Series 1 electric Cobra are as follows:
- 0-60 mph in 4 seconds
- 250 Nm of continuous torque, peaking at 500 Nm
- 150 mile estimated range
- 230 kW of power
- Weight of approximately 1,050 kg
Only 58 of the Series 1 electric Cobras will be produced by AC Cars to commemorate the production of the very first Cobra 60 years ago.

Its hard to believe Dodge has been building Hemi-powered Charger cop cars for 15 years now, and they are everywhere. Changing Registration To Electric To Get An E
When ownership of a used vehicle is transferred in Ontario, the vehicle must pass an emissions test before plates are issued to the new owner. After that, it must be re-tested every other year.
Since conversions are rare, you can be pretty sure that no one at the licence bureau will know what to do when you walk in with your fresh safety certificate and insurance slip in hand, looking for your e-test exemption and your new plates.
Anticipating this, I called ahead. Three times. And got 3 different answers about what I needed to do, the most plausible-sounding one of which was: “bring a letter signed by your mechanic, which says the vehicle no longer has an internal combustion engine.”
Again, Billings Automotive to the rescue. Dean wrote up a letter.
Turns out even that was not needed. When I showed up with all the required documents, the bureau employee looked in the “help” section of their computer system for instructions about changing fuel types on the registration, and it simply said they could change it at the owner’s request.
I definitely recommend calling ahead anyway, asking what they require, and taking the person’s name so you have someone to refer to should things go sideways. But apparently, anyone can walk into the licence bureau and state that their vehicle has been converted to electric power, and Bob’s your uncle! No more emissions tests. Better not let that get out…
