Hot New Electric Cars That Are Coming Soon
Automakers are offering new models in all shapes and sizes
The coronavirus pandemic has slowed auto development and production, but manufacturers plans to introduce electric vehicles continue unabated. In fact, dozens of pure electric models are set to debut by the end of 2024.
On the menu are cars and an increasing number of SUVs and pickups. And there will be a broader array of plug-in hybrid models, which can run on mostly electric power for a stretch before a gasoline engine kicks in and operates the vehicle more like a traditional hybrid.
The rollout of new EV and plug-in hybrid models across different segments is good news for consumers looking for an alternative-fuel vehicle that will fit their needs.
Below is a rundown of some of the models that are worth watching for in the next couple of years. The list is alphabetical by automaker. Prices are estimates in most cases.

Lucid Air Dream Edition Range: 520 Miles
Lucid Motors, a California EV startup, has destroyed the competition to nab the title of longest-range electric car in the US.
Its debut vehicle, the $169,000 Air Dream Edition Range, earns an EPA-estimated range of 520 miles, well over 100 miles more than the Tesla Model S. Range ratings don’t always hold up in real-world conditions, but multipleoutlets have verified that the Air can indeed cover at least 500 miles.
Lucid plans to sell a base model someday called the Air Pure. It expects that car will have 406 miles of range just one mile more than the Model S. But who’s counting?

Read Our Tesla Model Y Review
As a car, we don’t like it nearly as much as the various EVs in the lower price category. We have serious issues with Tesla’s questionable reliability and build quality history, plus the sparse cabin that saves money on switchgear and controls by relying almost exclusively on the giant central screen . Its competitors are better made, less unusual, and cost less money. They also have comparable ranges, but where the Model Y continues to score big is Tesla’s unmatched mix of efficiency, range and performance. The Model Y is much quicker than any of those cheaper EVs with comparable range. It may not be a great car, but it has a superlative electric powertrain and battery. Tesla also has following and people literally swear by them, warts and all.
Consider This Before Buying An Ev

Picking a car isn’t the only consideration when making the jump to an electric vehicle. Not being able to just zip over to the gas station around the corner does complicate things a bit, but we can help you with this too.
The first thing you should consider when shopping for an electric vehicle — hell, even before you start shopping — is figuring out how you’re going to charge it. The fact is that while every EV comes with an adapter that will let you plug into any old 110-volt outlet , the size of modern EV batteries means that you could spend days waiting for a decent charge.
If you own your own home, you’ll need to look into getting a Level 2 charger installed. Luckily, these aren’t that expensive on their own. While getting one put in does require a contractor’s services , there can be tax breaks for doing so — especially if you decide to make the jump to solar at the same time.
If you don’t own your own home, you’ll be using a charging network. You should look into which ones are the most well-established where you live and drive most often. If you have a Tesla, this is pretty easy. If you have other EVs, you’ll have to do a little research, but the most common nonproprietary networks are Electrify America, Chargepoint and EVGo. They all have different apps and pricing, but they all work more or less the same. These charging networks will offer Level 2 charging or DC fast-charging. The latter is considerably more expensive, but it’s much faster.

Rivian R1t: 314 Miles
Electric-vehicle startup Rivian made a splash when it beat Ford, GM, and Tesla to market with its pickup truck back in September. The adventure-focused R1T delivers great off-roading chops, fanciful features like a slide-out camping kitchen, and plenty of range for getting to the great outdoors.
After a price hike, the truck costs $79,500.
Is This Car Made In America
The made in America question is a bit complex when it comes to cars and trucks. Sometimes, a lot of the content of a vehicle is made in other countries and then undergoes final assembly in the US. Other times, parts are made in the US and final assembly happens elsewhere. And in a handful of cases a company will have their HQ in the US but not actually make cars in America.
So, whats a consumer to do? One way to tell if a car is assembled in the US is to check the VIN. The US is usually a number starting with one, four, or five . Japan and Korean start with the letter J and K respectively.
Beyond that, you can check AALA data . This has to be displayed on all new cars sold in the US, with data available on the National Highway and Transportation Administrations website. This information is updated quarterly, but is often incomplete, unfortunately, especially if companies dont always provide info in a timely manner.
Arguably the best way to check just how made in America a car really is, is to check the American University Kogod Made in America Auto Index. The 2020 index is a good indicator of which automakers are likely to be producing their cars in the US, although its worth bearing in mind that EVs may not be made on the same lines as a companys gasoline or hybrid models.

The Model Y Long Range might not have the crazy acceleration of the Performance model, but it’s the version we prefer. It’s still pleasingly quick but is smoother riding, and as its name states, has a longer range. This is one stylish and roomy electric SUV with strong appeal.

There’s no better electric car to drive than the Taycan, which absolutely lives up to its Porsche name and expectations. It’s also very expensive, which also lives up to its Porsche name and expectations. In any case, from the base Taycan up to the mighty Taycan Turbo S, every version we’ve tested has been exceptional … both through the lens of electric cars as well as performance cars. We’ve also found that it’s capable of going much farther than its official EPA range ratings would indicate the Turbo is rated at 201 miles yet we managed 287 miles in normal driving without hypermiling or other shenanigans. Beyond performance and range considerations, the Taycan impresses with its top-notch build quality, ample customization options and its athletic sports car looks. Of course, those looks differ by your choice of body style: there’s the regular sedan, the Sport Turismo wagon and the Cross Turismo adds body cladding and a whisker of extra ground clearance to the Sport Turismo body. Basically, it’s a Porsche Taycan Outback.

Read Our 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Review
We’re not sure if the Ioniq 5 looks like it came from the future or from a “Back to the Future Part II”-style vision of the future, but either way, it sure is different. Although it looks like a compact hatchback, in reality, it’s as long as the quite-large 2022 Hyundai Tucson with a wheelbase longer than the very-large Hyundai Palisade. It’s not very tall or high off the ground, but inside, its deceptive dimensions provide a surprisingly airy, spacious and versatile cabin. We also love its user-friendly and well-executed technology, both in terms of infotainment and safety, plus the clean, minimalist look that still maintains some physical controls. Yes, that’s a knock on Tesla. Every Ioniq 5 features the same 77.4-kilowatt-hour battery pack , and like other EVs, it feeds the rear wheels or all four thanks to an additional motor up front. This results in multiple performance and range figures, though the gap in performance is far more pronounced . Importantly, every Ioniq 5 has 800-volt electrical architecture, making it possible to charge from 10-80% at a 350-kW charger in just 18 minutes. It’ll speed things up at less powerful chargers as well.

Volvo Xc40 P8 Recharge
“We loved the XC40 from the get-go but had a few reservations about the powertrains. Not any more. In battery-electric guise the XC40s worthier attributes the thoughtful packaging, sense of well-being and design are augmented by a remarkable new turn of speed and handling smarts. Like the Tesla Model 3 , the XC40 P8 makes an almost irresistible case for electrification.”
Why We Picked It
The Tesla Model 3 blends range, performance, and an unparalleled fast-charging network in a way no other EV can match. Tesla has far fewer stores than other makers have dealerships, and servicing in remote areas may be a challenge. But it remains the best value in EVs years after its launchthats how good it really is.

What Is The Lifespan Of An Electric Car
The lifespan of an EV depends on the battery pack. Consumer Reports estimates the average EV battery lifespan to be around 200,000 miles or 17 years of use if you drive 12,000 miles every year. The vehicles usually come with a battery warranty of at least eight years. In general, most EV batteries last between 10-20 years and after they wear out, you can choose to replace just the battery or the car itself.
Tesla Model : 358 Miles
Tesla’s Model 3 has been on sale since 2017, but it hasn’t gotten stale yet. Even with price hikes over the years, the $58,000 Model 3 Long Range provides some of the best bang for your buck when it comes to driving range.
Just like with all Teslas the wheels you choose can have a big impact on range.

Mini Cooper Electric Se Hardtop
The Mini Cooper Electric has one of the most unique designs on our list its a bit of a cross between a coupe and a hatchback. Like a traditional coupe, it has two doors and seats four passengers, but it has a hatchback instead of a conventional trunk.
The Mini Cooper has a top speed of 93 mph, has 114 miles of range on a fully charged battery, and gets 119 miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent .
The Mini Electric is a great city car for drivers who want a compact design that can fit into tight parking spots, but it doesnt offer much in the way of cargo space only 8.7 cubic feet. The back seat is also a tight fit, with only 30.8 inches of legroom.

Chevrolet Bolt Ev Crossover / Euv
Another Chevy! Set to be built at GMs Orion Assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan, the Chevrolet Bolt EV Crossover is benefiting from a $160 million upgrade for Bolt production. This EV SUV will be taller and roomier than a regular Bolt and offers GMs Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system. Connectivity to Super Cruise is included free of charge for three years if you purchase the Premier trim, after which a paid plan is required.
The current Bolt EV gets 259 miles on a charge, and the Chevy EUV is estimated to get 250 miles range, which is pretty good for an SUV, if not as good as the BMW iX is expected to get.
The better news though is that the Chevy Bolt EUV is priced at $33,000 to start, which is far lower than a BMW!

How Did We Choose These Affordable Evs
After writing about the changed considerations for the EV tax credit and looking at the manufacturers on that list, I decided to target both affordability and eligibility for the credit. I looked at different types of vehicles, including sedans and trucks, and in the honorable mentions at the end of this article, I even highlight a plug-in hybrid minivan that qualifies for the credit — the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV. I wanted to ensure that the vehicles on this best list met the standards set by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and that they had quality features at an affordable price point.
/10 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo
The Taycan is among the best daily driver electric cars for the family man. And its Cross Turismo model is undoubtedly the most complete, fast wagon in the market today. The car is designed to embrace the lifestyle of a family man while offering the performance of a supercar. It is a better version of the regular Taycan, similar underneath they may be, but the Cross Turismo is a whole different car in terms of outlook and ability.
The car comes with a larger rear luggage compartment and a more spacious interior. Its capabilities are further emphasized by the fact that it features an optional off-road design package. And with a dynamic range of 300 miles, the Cross Turismo is possibly the most ideal family electric car on sale today.
