Exclusive: Audi R8 To Be Reinvented As Flagship Electric Supercar

  • Next ‘R8’ won’t use the same name but will maintain halo positioning in brand’s lineup

  • PB18 E-tron concept, shown in 2018, is likely to be a design influence

An Audi R8 successor is being readied for a mid-decade launch, which will reinvent the marques famous halo model while also helping to reposition the brand as an electric forerunner.

According to Audi insiders, the supercar has not yet been officially signed off but is very much underway. It wont be called the R8 and will take an entirely new design direction so it wont resemble the long-standing model.

However, it will stay true to a pure sports car concept, with two doors and more power than anything else in the Audi range, albeit coming from an electric set-up.

It’s What’s On The Inside That Counts

The AudI RS E-Tron GT Is an Ultra-Fast $140,000+ Electric Sedan

This isn’t an EV preoccupied with its internal specs, though, rather a car with the latest and greatest tech at the forefront of its interior and exterior design.

Three-dimensional spoilers positioned ahead of its front wheels are designed to optimize airflow, adding, Audi says, almost nine miles to the car’s range. Then there’s the Matrix LED headlights, which allegedly utilize 16 individually triggered LEDs that allow the driver to switch between four different light signatures.

Inside, an augmented reality HUD actively displays navigation directions in the driver’s field of view much like the latest Mercedes S-Class and also creates visual markers to ensure distance is kept from the car in front when in adaptive cruise control.

Like other larger Audi models, the 10.1-inch touchscreen utilizes haptic feedback, and the company says an 11.6-inch display will become available at a later date which would mark the largest ever display in an Audi.

The sound system in the Q4 e-Tron looks pretty good, too. For the first time, audio company Sonos will provide speakers exclusively to an Audi vehicle.

Perhaps the most attractive feature of the new Audi Q4 e-Tron, though, is its price. The entry-level SUV model available for UK order in April and worldwide later in the year is expected to start at around £37,000 , making it Audi’s cheapest EV yet.

Almost 60% Ev Sales Growth In 2021

2021 was a pretty tough year for manufacturers with chip shortages and then the covid-19 pandemic. Most auto manufacturers saw a drop in their sales figures, but that’s not the case for Audi.

Despite the obstacles in the previous year, Audi got a 57.5% sales increase for their fully electric cars. The luxury manufacturer sold 81,894 electric car units in 2021, which beats their 2020 sales. Audi achieved this feat with eight EVs on sale, and the carmaker plans to add 12 more EVs to its lineup by 2025.

Ev Motor Power And Performance

Packing a pair of electric motors that create an electrified version of Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system, the regular e-tron GT generates up to 522 horsepower while the RS version peaks at 637 ponies. This power is converted to exhilarating acceleration with the help of its innovative two-speed transmission, which has a first gear for launches and a second top gear for optimal efficiency. A complex cooling system means its battery pack can handle repeated runs without the typical signs of heat-related degradation. Audi also eschews traditional one-pedal driving on its sporty EV, instead, providing a more natural feel. The e-tron GT is available with all-wheel steering, an adjustable air suspension, and wheel sizes that range from 19 up to 21 inches. We’ve driven the RS version and appreciated its smooth ride, stable handling, and its selectable regenerative-braking settings, which can be adjusted via the paddles on the steering wheel. In our testing, the RS e-tron GT blasted to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds while the less powerful e-tron GT did the deed in 3.6 seconds.

NEW Audi A6 Avant e-Tron: A Future Electric RS6? 4K

Every e-tron GT features an 83.7-kWh lithium-ion battery. The regular model gets an EPA-estimated 238 miles of range, but the RS model is rated slightly lower at 232 miles. The e-tron GT can also be recharged from 5 to 80 percent of its battery capacity in a claimed 23 minutes using the standard 270-kW DC fast charger. In our testing, both the e-tron GT and the RS e-tron GT beat their respective range estimates as we observed the same 240 miles of range for each car. Even with this result though, the e-tron GT’s driving range is short of rivals such as the Model S and the Lucid Air.

Audi Ai: Trail Concept

Probably one of the most intriguing electric car concepts, the Audi AI: Trail is a wonder. Audi presented the concept car at the 2019 IAA and has since released the car to auto critics for reviews.

The first noticeable thing about the concept is its panoramic view. Audi included different levels of autonomous driving, but the driver still has to drive if the terrain is rough. For power, the EV has an output of 320kW and 737.6 lb-ft of torque. Instead of headlights, the car’s path is illuminated by five drones.

An Electric Audi R8 Successor Is Coming Around 2025

– Sep. 12th 2022 1:08 pm PT

Audi is working an all-electric successor to its R8 supercar to be released around mid-decade, according to a new report from Autocar. While the new EV wont carry the R8 name, it will hold the spot at the top of the Audi lineup with higher performance than the e-tron GT.

The electric R8 successor hasnt received final approval yet, but development efforts are already in progress at Audi.

The current gas-powered R8 model is nearing the end of the line, expected to go out of production in 2023. Instead of replacing it with a gas car, Audi will transition to electric for its halo performance model. The company plans to stop introducing new gas models after 2025, so with a planned mid-decade launch for the R8 successor, its going to have to be electric anyway.

The current Audi e-tron GT RS is actually the most powerful Audi ever made, with 637 horsepower, more than the gas-powered R8. But its a four-door performance sedan, whereas the R8 is a dedicated sportscar.

So the R8 successor will be built as a pure sportscar as well two doors, low roof, and lots of power. It will need to be better than the e-tron GT RS 637hp and 3.2 second 0-60 time, and with a large enough battery to enable heavy track use.

While we havent seen a name or a design concept yet, a few years back Audi did show the PB 18 e-tron concept car at Monterey Car Week which could lend some cues to the R8 successor.

Future Audi Ev Models

The future is electric, and this also applies to sports cars. According to CNET, Audi plans to replace its halo sports car, the R8, with a fully electric model. Linda Kurz, Audi’s head of product marketing for the Audi Sport division, explained that they want to “transform the R segment, and the R segment is going to be fully electric.

…the R segment is going to be fully electric. This is our job for the next decade

The current R8 is a beast, but it’s powered by a massive V10 engine which will most likely be phased out after the R8’s run in its current iteration is over.

When you think of electric vehicles, chances are you also think about Tesla.

The electric car company, helmed by Elon Musk, is America’s best-selling EV company.

But with the auto industry shifting its focus to electric vehicles, there are now a lot more players in the space.

That includes Audi, which is actually not new to the electric vehicle space. It debuted its first e-tron back in 2018.

The company also announced that in Q2, sales of its e-tron were up 87% though overall sales were down year-over-year.

Spencer Reeder, Audi’s director of sustainability, explains how Tesla has opened up the EV conversation.
