600 Mile Electric Car Journey In a 100 Mile Nissan Leaf! (& Snow!)

General Motors is making sure the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV is priced at least as low as incoming 2023 versions. A startup claims it can boost the BMW iX to 600 miles of range. And Cadillac plans to make its Celestiq electric flagship in Michiganby hand. This and more, here at Green Car Reports.

GM revealed that its tech center in Warren, Michigan, will be the home of the upcoming Cadillac Celestiq electric sedan. Thats where it will be hand-built and include more than 100 parts that are to be 3D-printedso look for this flagship EV to be rare and exclusive, albeit built on the same Ultium propulsion platform as GMs other upcoming EVs. The Celestiq will debut in July, but GM still hasnt disclosed the timeline for when it will be built and put on sale.

The Michigan-based startup Our Next Energy will use the BMW iX electric SUV as a demonstrator for its new mixed-chemistry battery tech, called Gemini. Set to use one chemistry for power delivery and the other for energy storage, ONE claims it will enable 600 miles of range in the iXconditions or driving cycle not yet confirmed.

If youre waiting for the lower-priced 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV to arrive at dealerships, GM has made clear that its ready to make a deal with its existing 2022 inventory, with a 2022 Chevy Bolt EV and EUV rebate of $5,900 and $6,300, respectivelythe amount of their price cuts for 2023. In an EV market with few cost reductions, it’s noteworthy.

New Tesla Model Y Rival Has Over 600 Miles Of Range

The battery takes just 35 minutes to fully recharge.

The Tesla Model Y is about to face some stiff competition from the Fisker Ocean and Mercedes EQA electric crossovers. But there’s another competitor you probably haven’t considered. California-based US startup Mullen Technologies is also joining the electric crossover bandwagon with the MX-05, the company’s second electric model following the Qiantu K50 K50 electric sports car.

Previewed in new render images, the Mullen MX-05 is described as a mid-size luxury SUV. Being an electric SUV, the MX-05 will inevitably have more mass-market appeal than the K50.

Powering the Mullen MX-05 will be a 150-kWh solid-state battery developed by China-based engineering firm Linghang BOAO. Mullen says this will provide a driving range of over 500 miles, but doesn’t specify if this is based on EPA or NEDC range estimates. Based on results during independent testing, Mullen claims the battery technology will allow electric vehicles to travel 640 miles when cruising at 55 mph on a flat surface and 550 miles at a cruising speed of 75 mph. For comparison, the Tesla Model Y Long Range has 316 miles of range. Using a fast charger, the battery takes just 35 minutes to recharge.

Additional testing also showed the battery suffered no degradation in extreme temperatures ranging from -40 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius. The battery pack also suffered less than two percent degradation over 10,000 charge/discharge cycles.

Top 10 Electric Cars With 300 Mile Range In 2022

When purchasing an electric vehicle, one of the primary considerations for prospective buyers is the vehicles range. This is due to the fact that one extremely powerful motivational element is range anxiety, which is the fear that your electric vehicle may not have the necessary amount of battery charge to finish a trip. Driving an electric vehicle that all of a sudden loses its charge is hardly anyones idea of a good time, much like running out of petrol in a traditional automobile.

Even if there are more charging stations being built all the time, the range of an electric car is still the most important factor for many people when shopping for one. Tesla has been at the top of this list for years, but recently, a number of established automakers and new startup companies that have just delivered their first cars have emerged as formidable competitors. No electric car on the market in 2022 will have a range of fewer than 300 miles, regardless of the kind of vehicle that most appeals to the buyer. Excluding the GMC Hummer EV, all range ratings are derived on data provided by the EPA. The GMC Hummer EV has not yet been rated. Listed below are electric cars with 300 mile range.

Diving Into One’s Dual

Dual-Chemistry is a label that ONE’s Gemini batteries use to define the blend of two types of battery cells. One will be utilized for power delivery and the other for energy storage. This increases the range and reduces lithium usage by 20% and graphite by 60%. While minimizing nickel and cobalt use, ONE claims.

The “Traction” section contains cells that use a lithium-iron-phosphate , an electrolyte. This cathode has a lower energy density than chemistries made from cobalt, nickel, or manganese. LFP batteries are uncommon in North America but very common in Chinese EVs. Analysts believe LFP batteries will become more popular as they use cheap iron in their cathode. This is even though it still falls below advanced cobalt-nickel cells.

However, the “Long Range” section of ONE’s Gemini batteries is established on a proprietary material rich in manganese and has very little cobalt or nickel. Mujeeb, ONE’s CEO and founder, said to Car and Driver that the company is still experimenting with the use of blends of the metals to improve performance. It has only an elemental copper current collector–rather than individual anode material.

This design is known as “anode free” in academic circles. Ijaz stated that the LFP “Traction” cells would cover nearly 99 percent of the vehicle’s total miles. The “Long Range” cells are used for the 1 percent of use that requires extreme power. This reduces stress and prevents the cells from deteriorating.

Geelys Zeekr Will Deliver Evs With 600+ Mile Range Catl Battery Tech In Q1 2023

nikola unveils

China-based Zeekr announced Saturday that it will be the first global brand to take advantage of the Qilin battery and third-generation cell-to-pack technology from CATL, the largest EV battery supplier in the world.

It said that the battery tech will first be used in its Zeekr 009, which it calls “the world’s first electric luxury MPV,” with deliveries due in the first quarter of 2023. The battery tech will give the model, perhaps better described as a tall-riding crossover wagon with plenty of passenger space, a driving range in excess of 1000 km on a charge.

CATL first revealed the new version of cell-to-pack tech in April, claiming that it could deliver 13% more power by volume than the 4680-format cells Tesla is shifting toas well as impressive energy density of 255 wh/kg with current-tech lithium-ion cells and 160 wh/kg with LFP cells.

Put simply, cell-to-pack tech skips a step. While usually EV cells are packed into modules, which are then laid into packs, the technology makes some technology leaps to ensure more monitoring and cooling and to make the modules unnecessary.

CATL third-generation cell-to-pack tech

With lithium-ion cells, CATL said that the technology will enable EVs to simply pack more cells into a smaller volume, delivering more than a 1,000-km range in a breeze, and it hints that its looking ahead to other future cell chemistries with the layout, such as sodium-ion.

All About The Fresco Xl All

According to CarBuzz, the Fresco XL pod will be fully electric with an electric motor powering every axle. The developing company claims that a motor on every axle will help drivers to better navigate rugged, harsh-weather climates. The all-wheel drive on the Fresco XL will even allow drivers to go off-road, should they choose.

As we can see from this video rendering, this car is the futuristic vision that we all might have imagined to be whizzing across roads in the twenty-first century. The sloped, sleek front window appears to have a dark tint, possibly to combat the heat that could enter through the large glass panel. The back is boxy and upright, asserting itself confidently for long-haul road trips. The vehicle can also be used as a makeshift camper, with fully reclining seats, transforming into sleeping surfaces. Even larger families will find quick accommodations for their traveling lifestyles.

The range on the all-electric pod will be fantastic, clocking in at an astounding 625 miles on a single charge of the battery. This battery wont be an ordinary EV battery by any stretch of the imagination. It will be an extra-large, double-stacked battery, with special technology outsourced from unnamed external parties.

Maker Of The First 600

GAC Motor, the carmaking conglomerate behind the first electric SUV announced with over 1000km range – the Aion LX Plus – has unveiled a new take on the affordable LFP battery tech that improves it across the specs board. Not only do the new design and chemistry offer 20% higher volumetric and 13.5% energy densities, but it also allows for much faster charging and longer lifespan than the current LFP batteries that are used in, say, over half of new Tesla cars like the Model 3.

Built around a new active cathode material with microcrystalline structure, the so-called SmLFP battery manages to avoid most of the pitfalls of the current lithium iron phosphate battery generation and will be in mass production next year when GAC plans to use it for the next-gen electric vehicles of its Aion brand. The new cathode material enables the SmLFP cells to charge at a 2C rate which theoretically should halve the current on-charger times of vehicles with LFP batteries.

Not only that, but the improved design and chemistry allow for about a million miles of service life, again a particular increase of the current LFP battery longevity. Last but not least, the battery capacity retention at sub-zero temperatures gets another 10% boost in direct comparison with the conventional LFP batteries used currently in electric cars.

Bmw Ix To Test Experimental Battery Claiming 600 Miles Of Range

The “Dual-Chemistry” battery pack from Michigan startup ONE pairs two different types of battery cells together, each with a different purpose.

Carmakers grapple with conflicting goals in designing electric-car batteries. They want high energy density for long range, but they also want to reduce the costly metals that provide that capacity.

Michigan battery startup Our Next Energy claims to have a better way to optimize across all these factors. Now, BMW will fit an early prototype of ONEs Gemini Dual-Chemistry battery into a test version of its iX EV luxury SUV to see if the claimsa heady 600 miles of range, nearly double the stock iX xDrive50’s EPA range estimatesare borne out in a variety of real-world uses. The test iX will be on the road by the end of this year, both companies say.

BMW is the logical vehicle partner to test ONEs technology, because its investment armBMW i Ventureswas one of several backers in a $25 million round of financing for the battery startup last October.

How Did They Do It

The Dyson Electric Vehicle – Canceled 600 Mile Range EV

Driving reported that this achievement, while noteworthy, is not due to any huge advances in technology.

“Unfortunately, like so many things, it was yet another example of common, everyday systems engineering, the fancy bon mot project leaders trot out whenever they want to credit something a little more exotic than ‘attention to detail,'” they wrote.

Apparently, the vehicle is able to run on such a small battery because it is also physically small.

The EQXX is 50 percent smaller and 30 percent lighter than another EV that Mercedes-Benz recently released.

The visual styling of the vehicle is also aerodynamic and apparently quite strange.

Driving described the appearance of the vehicle as “a face only an aerodynamicist could love.”

They went on to describe the styling as a “raindrop” shape, a naturally aerodynamic form.

Despite the less flashy pragmatism, the vehicle is fully functioning, according to Benz.

The EQXX was accompanied by an agent for the German TÜV, and the charging port was sealed at the start of the journey.

Electric Car Battery With 600 Miles Range

SAN JOSE, Ca. Electric carmakers have long been clamoring for a battery breakthrough that will improve the range of their vehicles while also extending their lifespans. Innolith, a Swiss startup, says its new high-density lithium-ion batteries can do just that.

The company claims to have made the worlds first 1,000 Wh/kg rechargeable battery. By comparison, the batteries that Tesla uses in its Model 3 the so-called 2170 cells are an estimated 250 Wh/kg the company plans to eventually push that to 330 Wh/kg. Meanwhile, the US Department of Energy is funding a program to create 500 Wh/kg battery cells. If Innoliths claims turn out to be true, its high-density battery may have just leap-frogged over those targets.

ITS A BIG JUMP

Its a big jump, Innolith chairman Alan Greenshields said in an interview with The Verge. Its basically, in rough numbers, four times the current state-of-the-art for lithium-ion Roughly three times what is generally accepted as being the next improvement in lithium. And its two times the energy density target organizations like the US Department of Energy have set. So this is a big deal.

If you can get a car with 500, 600 miles of range, boy that leaves a lot of room for comfort in not having to worry about getting fuel, said Matt Degen, an editor and car reviewer for Kelley Blue Book.

I personally like the idea of waking up every morning, if youve been able to charge overnight, to a full tank, he said.

He said its too early to know how well the new CATL battery will work, but theres no doubt that the EV ranges are increasing by leaps and bounds. He pointed to the announcement last month that Stellantis, parent company of Jeep and Chrysler, had purchased a plant in Massachusetts for manufacturing solid-state batteries, a technology that could lead to a big increase in range and a decrease in charging time.

As battery technology improves, ranges should increase across the price spectrum. For example, the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV, a compact SUV, will go on sale in about a year with a price of about $30,000 and a range of about 300 miles.

Zeekr is not alone in having announced a model with a range of more than 600 miles. Steve Man, a senior auto analyst for BloombergNEF, listed two others, both from Chinese brands:

CATL and Zeekr jointly announced their plans to use the new battery on Aug. 27.

Now more than a year later, I havent seen any update and Geely did not respond to a request for comment.

The Future Ahead For Bmw And One

ONE proclaims it can thus furnish a battery with an energy density of twice that of today’s EVs. It also concentrates on battery chemistries that are safer and more sustainable, assembled via a “conflict-free supply chain”, which includes reasonable and properly sourced manganese.

A lot of battery chemistries show some assurance in laboratory tests. But far fewer make it to production or extended testing. By the end of the year, the prototype Gemini-powered BMW iX will be on the road. It will be the first to demonstrate the Gemini battery’s ability to store and deliver energy.

BMW and ONE will then work together to test further. Ijaz points out that ONE must “work with BMW to understand their requirements” to be a long-term supplier. This is a long and challenging road, but it’s one that every battery startup must travel before their products reach the market.

The ONE-powered BMW iX is a milestone for the company. It will power an actual vehicle instead of just showing bench-test results. One or more of the four suppliers that will make the cells for this prototype pack, from North America and Asia, will work with ONE to scale up production and prototyping.

However, those weren’t Gemini cells. The BMW iX, expected to arrive by the end of the year, will probably use very early and experimental versions of ONE’s latest cells. If everything goes according to plan, this will be considered definite progress.

Mercedes Shows Off 600+ Mile Eqxx Electric Concept Car

Porsche. No Substitute! : Photo

Many concept cars arent fully functional, but Mercedes plans to cross much of Europe on a single charge in this one. Meet the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX. You wont be able to buy it. Its just a design study the German automakers engineers undertook to see what they could accomplish. But what they accomplished is significant for the near future of driving.

This thing, they claim, goes over 600 miles on a charge while carrying four adults. Based on average distances driven per year, a driver in the U.S. or China would have to fully recharge the VISION EQXX only twice per month, Mercedes says.

Traction + Long Range

The Dual-Chemistry label on ONEs Gemini battery refers to the pairing of two different types of battery cells, each with a different purpose.

The Traction portion has cells that use a lithium iron-phosphate cathode, known to have a lower energy density than chemistries based on cobalt, nickel, manganese, or aluminum. LFP batteries are rare in North America, but common in Chinese EVs. Their use of cheap and easily available iron in the cathode leads battery analysts to suggest LFP cells will surge in popularity as their energy density rises, even though it remains below that of advanced cobalt-nickel cells.

The Long Range portion of ONEs Gemini battery, on the other hand, uses a higher energy-density chemistry based on a proprietary material rich in manganese, with only minimal cobalt and nickel. During the current R& D phase, ONE founder and CEO Mujeeb Ijaz told Car and Driver, the company is still experimenting with blends of the three metals to enhance performance. Unusually, it has only a bare copper current collectorrather than separate anode materiala design known in academic circles as anode-free.

The LFP “Traction” cells will provide close to 99 percent of the vehicles overall miles, Ijaz said, while the “Long Range” cells kick in for the 1 percent of usage that requires extreme power, reducing stress on and deterioration of the LFP cells.
