Safety & Driver Assistance Tech: 13/15
The Model X was last rated by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2020 with five stars, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has yet to rate the SUV. Many high-end SUVs like this havent been tested either, but the agency has evaluated the other three Tesla models at various points.
Tesla is generous in what it provides as standard for safety features , but its add-on packages muddle the offerings and confuse consumers even more than the name Autopilot already does.
The X includes auto steering, acceleration and pedestrian braking as part of Autopilot, along with emergency braking, collision warning and blind-spot monitoring. The $6,000 Enhanced package adds long-range highway navigation, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, Summon and Smart Summon. These more automated features can be glitchy, which is not confidence-inducing.
Its the $12,000 FSD package thats most worrisome. The system is not fully self-driving capable and requires driver attention at all times. Yet Tesla continues to market it as more than a hands-free driving tool. While it can handle some city driving with traffic light recognition and other off-highway scenarios, its still in beta in real-time, which feels hasty.
Tesla Model X Plaid: Price Interior Top Speed And Everything We Know
ByRob Clymopublished 24 June 22
Stunning performance and a bundle of other tweaks make the Model X Plaid stand out from the crowd.
Release date: Early 20220 to 60 mph: 2.5 secondsSmarts: Autopilot, optional FSD upgrade, AAA gaming, Tesla Premium connectivity
The Tesla Model X Plaid is here, replacing the old performance Model X with something decidedly better. The car still offers the same beefy SUV design that we was there before, but with significantly more impressive improvements under the hood especially in the performance department.
The Model X Plaid uses the same tri-motor Plaid powertrain as the Model S Plaid, which launched in mid-2021. That means the Model X Plaid comes with a trio of motors that offer the SUV a whopping 1,020 bhp, with a 0-60 time of just 2.5 seconds. But as impressive as that is, there’s more than speedy acceleration to gawk at. Here’s everything you need to know about the Tesla Model X Plaid.

Tesla Model X Vs Tesla Model Y
The Model Y is Tesla’s newer but more compact crossover model. The Long Range version of the Model Y begins at a much more accessible $62,990 and boasts a 330-mile range and a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds. That means it’s not as quick as the Model X nor does it have the same range but it’s still better than virtually every other SUV. Of course, you can go for the Model Y Performance which is quicker than the Model X and nearly $50,000 cheaper. The Model Y is spacious inside but not as expansive as the Model X and it does without the fancy Falcon Wing rear doors. If you don’t need the additional space and range offered by the Model X, the Y could be for you, especially if you value affordability and performance.

The Falcon Doors Are Simultaneously Cool And Confoundingbut The Rest Of The Model X Is Comfortable And Practical
Flexibility makes the Model X work, much as with any good family crossover. You can choose seating layouts for five, six, or seven passengers, with a reasonably big cargo area in back that extends to 88 cubic feet with the seats foldedand a frunk instead of an engine bay.
The problematic falcon wing doors take away a point, earning the 2021 Model X a 7 out of 10 for comfort.
Those doors are slow to operate and require overhead clearance and what makes them especially awkward is that youll need to stand well ahead or behind them during the 20-second opening process. Tesla reportedly has a more reliable set of hardware for them now, but the general reliability of the odd arrangement has been an issue, too.
The rest of the 2021 Model X interior is smartly designed, with six cupholders, a big center console, and up to five USB ports. Front seats are all-day comfortable, and the massive glass roof that extends into the windshield affords a panoramic view. The seating position is higher than in the Model S.
If you order the six-passenger layout, which swaps out the second-row bench seat for a pair of captains chairs, getting back to the third row is a lot easierbut the third row isnt any more spacious than in rival SUVs. A five-passenger version is standard.
Tesla Model X Plaid: Design And Interior
While the exterior revisions of the Tesla Model X aren’t particularly dramatic, the subtle design flourishes do give the SUV an extra touch of zing. The most notable feature are the redesigned air vents in the front bumper, which follow the same theme as those seen on the latest Tesla Model S.
Theres also the option for switching the cars chromework with more moody back trim if you prefer. New wheels complete the imposing look of the car and will be available as either 20 or 22-inch options.
Central to the arrival of the Model X Plaid has been a makeover of the seven-seat interior, which is now more striking than ever. Perhaps the most noticeable feature is the steering wheel, which isnt your average circular affair. Instead, theres something that looks like it should be in an aircraft, with Tesla also doing away with the stalks that are normally present for lights and wipers.
Meanwhile, if your eyes are firstly drawn to the yoke-style steering column they’ll soon be heading in the direction of the 17-inch infotainment display. This beefy screen can be adjusted to suit the front seat occupant whos using it.
Rear seat passengers also get catered for in the infotainment department, with another 8-inch screen located in the back of the car. Tesla has designed the system to let occupants enjoy wireless gaming from wherever youre sat in the car.

Battery Power Charge Times And Range
The Long Range version of the 2021 Tesla Model X has a dual-motor configuration creating all-wheel drive as standard. These electric motors run off a 100-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It can travel for 360 miles from a full charge.
The 2021 Model X Plaid has three high-performance electric motors and covers 340 miles. When 22-inch wheels are fitted, this is reduced to 300 miles. These ranges have been calculated by the Environmental Protection Agency , along with the miles-per-gallon equivalent figures of energy consumed for distance traveled.
Recharging the Model X at home is best done with a 240-volt supply. Tesla also sells home charging equipment. Even then, expect it to take around 10 hours. A Tesla Supercharger station could take about an hour, or less if all thats needed is a top-up to get back to base, like 175 miles of range in 15 minutes. The expanding network of Superchargers brings road-trip capability to the Model X.
Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds. And despite the presence of all-wheel drive, we wouldnt take a Model S much further off-road than a campsite.
Tesla Model X Pricing
The Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price for the 2021 Tesla Model X Long Range is $89,990. A $1,200 destination charge pushes that to $91,190. The Plaid version means spending another $30k. By adding all the options to this top-line variant, the final amount exceeds $140k.
Luxury SUV/crossovers occupy a pricey little corner of the automotive world, but the Model X is among the priciest. The Jaguar I-Pace is around $71k. The Audi E-tron starts at about $67k. And the Mercedes-Benz EQC is approximately $69k. These all-electric vehicles qualify for the $7,500 federal income tax credit, although they dont have the interior space of the Model X.
For buyers who arent quite ready to commit to an all-electric luxury crossover, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid is around $83k.
Money probably isnt a big factor for those with the means and inclination to buy a new Model X, but theyll be pleased to know that some states still offer rebates for eco-friendly vehicles. And the Model X also holds its value well.
In the Kelley Blue Book 2020 Best Resale Value Awards, the Model X took the title for top electric vehicle, expected to retain 44 percent of its worth after five years. In this light, the price of 28 cents per kWh at Teslas Superchargers seems trivial.

How Much Does It Cost To Charge A Tesla Model X
Another question thats even harder to answer is, How much does it cost to charge a Tesla? There are, once again, a number of factors that determine this approximate pricing. This includes everything from the state you live in, to the charging level, and time of use .
By gathering the average residential energy costs in the US from the Energy Information Administration , we have calculated an estimated cost to charge at home or at a DC Fast Charger.
Austere Inside The 2021 Tesla Model X Casts A Bulbous Profile Outside With Trick Falcon
The Model X features the most polarizing Tesla design. In creating the Model X mostly from the Model S, the sexy, rakish look evolved to something more bulbousperhaps in an attempt to keep aerodynamics of the taller vehicle in check for this models long driving range.
Concave sides, combined with bulbous arcs on the hood and roof profile are the reasons why the Model Xs profile isnt easy on the eyes. Its balanced out inside by an appealing but simple and minimalist cabin theme, thus we give the Model Xs styling a 6 out of 10.
Although door operation, door hardware, and everything in between have been problematic, the flush door handles give it a clean look, while the rear roofline works better here than it does in many of the recent crossover coupe variants from Germany.
Inside, the Model X offers very little switchgear, and the 17.0-inch, vertically-oriented touchscreen dominates inside, with nearly all major controls nestled into this screen.

Range Energy Use & Charging: 15/15
The X is a long-range SUV with 348-mile range, but that drops to 333 miles with the Plaid and its 20-inch wheels . Its range keeps up with smaller EVs like the Model S and Mercedes EQS. Comparable e-SUVs like the iX fall behind at 324 miles and 316 for the Rivian.
Looking at battery efficiency, it has an MPGe of 102, combined. The Plaid drops to 98 MPGe. The Rivian and BMW trail at 69 and 86 MPGe combined, respectively. The base X uses 33.1 kWh for every 100 miles, while Plaid 34.4 kWh/100 miles. The average EV is higher at 34.6 kWh/100 miles. The R1S bumps up to 48.6 kWh and the iX to 40.7 kWh.
Charging is one of the Xs best assets. It takes only 15 minutes to add 175 miles of range. With the Supercharger network its easy to find and plug into fast charging. The Tesla-only network is the best public charging option. For home charging, the 11.5 kW onboard charger takes 20 hours to refill, and about half that on a Level 2 charger.
How Much Do Tesla Customizations And Add
The customization options for Teslas are quite limited. On the positive side, thats fewer decisions for you to make when ordering your car. On the negative, it means less freedom to personalize your vehicle when compared to, say, the Porsche Taycan.
The table below shows you all Tesla add-on options and how much they cost.
The cost of Tesla customizations by model
*Included for both Model Y variants as well as the Model X . Not available in the Model X Plaid.
**Included Model X Plaid, but $6,500 extra in the Model X .
***Only available for the Model Y Long Range and Model X .
The color customizations are also the same across all Tesla vehicles, although costs can vary across models. The availability of other customizations is more limited Carbon Fiber Decor interior styling, for instance, is only available for the Plaid versions of the Model X and Model S.
Full Self-Driving Capability is the crown jewel of Teslas additional options and much more powerful than the Basic Autopilot function that comes standard. FSD allows Autopilot navigation, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, and the parking lot Summon feature. Buying FSD with your vehicle now costs $12,000 , and ensures that youll receive all future updates to FSD features at no additional cost.

Purchase Process: Buying A Tesla Is Different
Tesla is unique and not just because of their branding and design. When you buy a Tesla, regardless of the model or trim level, you work directly with Tesla, not a third-party sales force as you would with traditional car brands
In fact, you can buy a Tesla remotely from the comfort of your home. Just go to their website, customize the vehicle of your choice, place your order, and wait for it to be delivered. There are no haggling, pushy salesmen, or dealership gimmicks.
While Tesla doesn’t have dealerships, they do have showrooms for those seeking an “in-store” experience. There, you can go for a test drive, speak with a specialist, or customize your car. But even at the showroom, you still place the order using the official Tesla website.
The website will show you two different prices listed for each car:
- Purchase price
- Potential savings
The purchase price is the real sticker price of the car. It’s also the price that we’ve used when discussing Tesla prices throughout this blog.
The potential savings price, which is shown to website users by default, is your estimated cost of ownership after EV incentives and potential gas savings. We’re not fans of prices being presented this way as it doesn’t reflect the amount you will actually have to pay to buy the car. Plus, incentive eligibility and gas savings can vary significantly from person to person.
Comfort & Room: 12/15
The X front seats should be more comfortable, though the standard heating and ventilation is appreciated. For longer drives the seating is stiff and too firm, though the synthetic leather upholstery looks clean and modern. The front cabin is very open with a swooping glass roof.
Legroom is nearly at the top of its segment with the second row at 38 inches. The iX just beats it at 38.9, while the Rivian is more cramped at 36.6 inches.
The farthest back row is spacious for an SUV at up to 32.2 inches, especially compared to the impossible-for-adults Model Y back row . A captain-seat layout makes it a more enjoyable experience, but say goodbye to that extra passenger for 2.4 inches of legroom. The seats are easy to fold and tilt, making climbing into the back easier, especially for nimble youngsters.

Cost To Charge On A Tesla Supercharger
Since Superchargers pull DC power directly from the grid, they are much more efficient and can offer much faster speeds, albeit at a higher price.
The 100 kWh battery on both trims of the Model X costs roughly $22.95 to fully charge from 0-100% via DCFC. This number accounts for a 95% battery efficiency as well.
The Long Range Model X comes in at around $0.064 per mile and $6.37 per 100 miles, while the Plaid trim can cost about $0.068 per mile, or $6.75 for 100 miles of range.

What The 2021 Tesla Model X Offers
If youre in the market for a brand new midsize luxury SUV, this might be a great year to make a shift toward an EV. But Teslas arent for everyoneit seems like people either hate it or love it. With that said, its important to understand that even the haters give Elon Musk and his team a lot of credit for being the primary driving force behind the growing EV revolution. According to MotorTrend, the Tesla Model X has dominated the electric crossover SUV segment since 2016.
One thing to consider is that the Model X doesnt necessarily offer much more than the Model S besides two extra seats. Nonetheless, for a large all-electric SUV, it tends to be far more compelling than other up and comers. Reviewers constantly praise it for not only having awesome power but its ride quality. It offers drivers near-perfect handling at higher speeds than any other midsize SUV in its class.
Both the 2021 Tesla Model X Long Range and Model X Plaid are AWD. However, the Plaid is powered by a Tri-Motor while the Long Range has a Dual Motor setup. That Tri-Motor allows the Plaid to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and is 1,050 hp. The Long Range has almost half that horsepower with 670 hp. Its safe to say that 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds isnt all too shabby either. As the name suggests, the Long Range has the farthest range of 360 miles the Plaid isnt far behind with an estimated range of 340 miles.
